Lesson 1: Circuit of Inquiries

Do Now: Pick up a “KWL Chart” and begin filling out the “K” and “W” sections.

Essential Question: What are the concepts related to forces, energy transformations, and motion?

Objective: SWBAT (Students Will Be Able To) perform activities based on forces, energy transformations, and motion to activate their knowledge for this unit.

K – What do I know? W – What do I want to know?

L – What did I learn?

Guiding Questions:• What do you know about forces (gravity, elastic, friction, magnetic)?• What do you know about kinetic/potential energy?• What do you know about motion?

Inquiry 1.1: The Hand Warmer

Inquiry 1.2: Constructing A Graph

Independent Variable = Time

Dependent Variable = Distance

Observe the change in temperature as you rub your hands together with the thermometer. Be careful of the pointy end.

Inquiry 1.3: Rolling AroundDescribe the motion of the ball as you roll it around the inside of the masking tape and the motion after you lift the roll of tape. Roll the ball around the tape in the middle of the table so that you have room on the table to watch the ball’s motion after you life the tape.

Inquiry 1.4: The Puck Launcher

Observe the puck’s motion along the table’s surface. Hold the puck from the back (on the same side as the rubber band) so that your hand does not stop the motion of the puck after it is released.

Inquiry 1.5: Down the Ramp

You will observe the car’s motion in two different starting positions. The positions are noted on the ramp.

Inquiry 1.6: The Suspended BarObserve how the magnets either attract or repel one another and how a compass responds when placed at different positions around a magnet.

Lesson 1: Circuit of Inquiries (Day 2)

APK (Accessing Prior Knowledge): Think about one of the inquiries you did yesterday and write a few complete sentences about what you observed using the words “force”, “energy”, and/or motion”. (Try to use at least 2 of the words)

Think-Pair-Share1. What did you observe yesterday while doing the

inquiries? What are your ideas about your observations? (Hand Warmer, Constructing a Graph, Masking Tape, Puck Launcher, Down the Ramp, Suspended Bar)

2. What are some examples of places where you have seen similar phenomena? (Example: A roller coaster will move faster down a steeper incline. Be specific in your examples.)

Let’s discuss which inquiries we believe fit into which category:– Force– Energy–Motion– Force, Motion, & Energy

Force Energy

Motion Force & Motion/Energy

Create a Twitter profile for Galileo.1. Think of a creative username.2. Write a short “Bio” describing him. (At least three

sentences)3. Write three tweets he would post.4. Think of three people he would follow or have as

followers.5. Have one of those followers “subtweet” one of

his tweets.

Exit Ticket: Think about the inquiries we did yesterday and the reading you did on Galileo. Next, think about any connections that you made between the reading and the inquiries. Write down (in complete sentences) the connection(s) that you made.
