HowTo. . .

From working on your golf game to working on your home decor, we have tons of tips to help you DIY your life and be more amazing!

LexScene Magazine | 68 | www.LexScene.com LexScene Magazine | 27 | www.LexScene.com

About to tackle a major painting project? Mix all your cans of paint together before you start. Why? There are inevitably going to be

variations in the color. There’s nothing worse than starting with a new can and nding out that it’s just the littlest bit lighter than the last stu you used. Mixing them will correct this issue!

ProTip

Decorating a home comes naturally to some people, but for most of us, it’s a pretty daunting task. From choosing a hue to nalizing all the little accent details, perfecting the color combinations in a home is always a challenge. How can you make the job easier?

Go TechieMany paint manufacturers o er amazing web resources that allow you to virtually paint an interior. Some of the websites allow you to upload a photograph of your own room, making the experience even more true to life. Their sites often have palette recommendations that can take out much of the guesswork.

Go Shopping!A home decor store can o er all the right inspiration. Maybe there’s a throw pillow that catches your eye or a funky piece of artwork. This can help guide you in selecting your colors. Note what color combinations appeal to you most. Try sticking to the color ratios--that is, a lot of blue with just a touch of red--or reverse it for your space. This can lead to some interesting results! Be aware of the “trend factor” of the hues.

Try Some SamplesMost major paint lines o er sample sizes of their paints. After you’ve chosen a color (or two, or three, or...) snag a sample can and actually paint the walls with it. This will help you get a better grasp on how dramatic the change will be and whether it all truly goes together.

Consult a ProIt may be worth your time to consult an expert in painting or interior design, especially for very speci c needs and settings. Usually, these professionals will consult with you for free or at a very reasonable rate. Just be up front with them regarding how much work you plan to do.

Color Your WorldPaint a Room Without Painting Anything

So, your landlord won’t let you paint. Or maybe you’re something of a commitment-phobe. Whatever the case may be, adding color to a space is possible without lifting a paintbrush.

- Fabric - Covering a wall with fabric or other materials allows the wall to change hues while leaving little damage behind.

- Tile - Permanent tile is a wonderful way to transform a space. But if you can’t go permanent, secure the tile to wood and anchor the wood to the wall. Landlord rules subverted successfully!

- Huge Art - If you don’t like your walls, cover them in things you do like. Posters, prints, canvases and sculptures can hide the walls that you don’t love. As a bonus, it’s easy to rotate art. Check out the service o ered by turningart.com, which is basically the Net ix of art stu !

- Vinyl Decals - These are removable and the possibilities are limitless. There are plenty out there to buy, but it’s easy to DIY. Contact a local sign shop for deals on their vinyl and get cutting.

“The American Dream”Rethinking

Imagine a two story Cape Cod house situated in a pleasant and well-manicured cul-de-sac. Surrounded by a perfectly symmetric white picket fence, the landscaping is lush and trails around the two car garage. Sounds perfect and benign, huh? This used to be the picture of The American Dream.

Traditionally, home ownership was used as a proxy for achieving the desired prosperity; ownership was a status symbol separating the middle classes from the poor. But over the last few years, The American Dream has evolved from less of a financial statement to more of a focus on financial security. The stigma that renting equaled social status has dissipated.

Suddenly, renting is not that last option for those who can’t afford a house; it’s an alternative for those who desire more than just a nice place to live with the addition of some “extras” (in the form of amenities) and a flexibility that most homeowners simply don’t have. It has become a viable solution for even the financially sound without sacrificing the implied prestige of owning a home.

The many myths associated with the perceived advantages of homeownership have been dispelled in the recent economic turns we have experienced as a country. As we re-examine our options, our priorities have shifted to maintaining a lifestyle. Owning the walls in which we wish to thrive has become less important. At one time it was thought that renting was “throwing away money”. In reality, your first five years of house payments are simply a “donation” to the bank. (Nearly one-third of all buyers move within five years, before they even start building any real equity). At one time, buying a home was a safe investment. You know this is no longer as safe an investment as it used to be if you’ve been watching the news. Times have changed and apartment communities have been paying attention, working hard

to attract the one-time dedicated homeowner to walk away from the maintenance, landscaping, and lost equity associated with owning.

Just like you can custom build a home, you can choose from hundreds of options in an apartment. Many websites allow you to go in and customize your search based on features and price points to make looking easier. Several apartment communities offer amenities that, as a homeowner, you would not have. Amenities such as state of the art fitness centers, business centers and wi-fi cafes, valet dry cleaning, coffee bars, car wash bays, and more give renters an advantage along with the freedom from the financial commitment that owning

represents.

As the trend in renting climbs, many apartment homes are being upgraded to meet the quality of a well built and smartly designed home. Hardwood flooring, double crown molding, black and stainless steel appliance packages, designer paint schemes, and modern light packages differentiate the quality of living you knew in your apartment dwelling days in college to what is now a standard in the premier apartment communities.

Now imagine pulling into your home and waiting for the controlled access gate to open. As you pass your pool, you feel a sense of community as you waive to a neighbor walking her dog. Once you park your car, you know you won’t need to drive anywhere

else because you will be working out at your exclusive fitness center that is just a short walk from your home. Once inside your front door, you notice it is a little cold and your heat is not working. You simply place a call and a service technician will be along quickly to fix the problem, free of charge.

While this is apartment living, for many it is the new, and satisfying, American Dream.

Apartments offer amenities and style that are often impossible to find in most home purchases. Taken at The Enclave Hartland.

A lot of people say that celebrities are just like us. Those people are lying. Celebrities have multi-million dollar budgets and a whole team of people that help them look fabulous wherever the paparazzi may be.

How can normal people get that Haus of Glamor style without the team of experts? It takes a little know-how and a lot of inspiration!

First, think High-Low. Wear one or two expensive pieces, then esh out the rest of the out t with inexpensive goods. This not only helps you stretch your fashion budget, but it helps you achieve that e ortless cool vibe that celebrities give when photographed on the street--many of them employ this very same tactic! Invest in great jeans, a fabulous bag that goes with everything, one pricey silk scarf and an awesome pair of boots. Then build out ts around these pieces using inexpensive accessories, shirts and vests.

And don’t be shy to accessorize! Celebs usually pile on a scarf, a hat, huge shades,

bracelets and a bag before ever stepping out of the house. Rings, necklaces and belts add a unique touch to any out t, making it uniquely your’s.

Celebrities love to layer. Wearing a button-up shirt? Slip a tank underneath. Going out in a maxi? Throw on a vest. Scarves, cardigans, jackets and layered shirts add variety to your wardrobe, making it seem as if your wardrobe is limitless.

Of course, that applies mostly to street fashion. For evenings out, simple is always impressive. A simple dress with a bold clutch will take care of an elegant event. For gents, a dress shirt and black slacks will always do.

While looking e ortless can take a lot of work, the important thing to remember is that you have to feel e ortless. If you spend too much time thinking about an out t, you’re going to overdo it. Just get dressed, slap on a smile and head out the door. You’ll be amazed how fabulous you can look when you know how fabulous you are.

Dress Like No One ElseDeveloping a truly unique style takes careful thought for some--for others, it’s as natural as walking to their closet, getting dressed and greeting the day. Some people have a knack for looking like no one else in the world while others struggle to carve out a unique visual identity.

Starting on this process will seem a bit backwards, but trust us here: look around at others to gure out what you like and don’t like in terms of style. Every new original is built from the foundation of someone else’s idea. So gure out what you like and sort out what you are adverse to. Lump your leanings into categories. Maybe you like quirky cute, haute runway or hipster chic. Whatever your tastes are, that is where you should begin.

Start to replicate. With your inspiration in mind, build out ts that re ect the style you love. Don’t worry about making exact copies, but mould your wardrobe to t within the fashion style you want to achieve.

Now innovate. Figure out how you can take your style to the next level. This may mean going shopping for new accessories and pieces, or this may mean starting from scratch and building your own unique fashion goods. This is often a trial-and-error process. Throw on an out t, wear it on the street and gauge reactions. Decide whether you’re where you want to be or if you have tweaking to do.

What’s important is to have a style that is consistently YOU. What are you known for? Bowties? Blazers? Flu y skirts? Have a trademark out t that no one else in Lexington will have on, or a “uniform” day-to-day out t that anyone will know you by. That might be jeans and a leather jacket, or that may be a fancy suit with a fabulous tie tac. Whatever it is, let it be YOUR’s.

When in doubt? Ask an expert. Consult a fashion maven who can steer you in the right direction.

Kevin HeitzFitness CoordinatorAthletes FirstOxmoor Country ClubLouisville, [email protected]: KHGolfFitness

Will focusing on a few key body parts during your normal workout help you straighten out that embarrassing shank on hole 17? Mike DeMaria, owner of Athletes First, a company based out of Hilton Head, S.C. that specializes in athletic training for golf and tennis, seems to think so. “Improve functional strength, balance and spinal stabilization. These components are key for a consistent set up, posture, better ball striking and the development of rotational power,” said DeMaria. Athletes First has recently expanded to Kentucky with a training facility at Oxmoor Country Club in Louisville. Kevin Heitz, University of Kentucky graduate and Titleist Performance Institute certi ed, is the golf tness trainer for Athletes First’s Louisville location. He has demonstrated six key exercises that will prepare your body for the beating 18 holes can give it.

1. Stability Ball Squats Place a stability ball on your lower back up against a wall. Keep your feet shoulder width apart and with a dumbbell in each hand, squat down until your knees are at 90 degrees. The key is to not allow your knees to go past your toes. Using your legs, push your body back to a standing position, making sure your knees do not lock. Do three sets of 12 reps. This will increase leg and hip strength. “It’s important to continually work the legs and hips in order to give rotation and power to your swing,” says Heitz.

2. Stability Ball Seated Rows Wrap a resistance band around a pole and position yourself sitting on the ball with your arms outstretched with no slack in the band. Be sure your feet are shoulder width apart and your back is stick straight throughout the entire exercise. Keeping your elbows close to your side, pull straight back pinching your shoulder blades together. Hold this position for a few seconds, then slowly return to the starting position. Do three sets of 12 reps. The rows work your upper body exibility and

strength, but it is important to use the stability ball to help with balance and strengthen your core. “Good stability and posture keep your form in tact and maintain your hip and shoulder rotations throughout your swing. This is crucial to hitting the ball consistently,” informs Heitz.

3. Crazy Ivans with Stability BallSit on the oor with your knees slightly bent while leaning back just a little. With the stability ball in your hands, rotate the ball from right to left crossing your body high above your head. For a bigger challenge raise your feet o the oor. Do three sets of 20 on each side.According to Heitz, Crazy Ivans are great for targeting the oblique’s which improves rotational power and keeps your swing stable.

4. Stability Ball ExchangesLie on your back and place the ball between your legs at the ankle. Simultaneously bring your arms and legs together in a v shape, passing the ball to your hands as you slowly bring yourself back down, keeping the ball above your head. Do three sets of 15.When done right, leg lifts are the go-to exercise to work the core. “Adding the stability ball only increases the di culty, improving overall core strength, stability and balance,” says Heitz.

5. Alternating Supermans Lie on your stomach and lift your right arm and left leg o the ground at the same time. Be sure to lift with your core. Bring them back down and switch to your left arm and right leg. Do three sets of 15 on each side.Supermans help strengthen the lower back, which promotes better posture. “Working the lower back can help produce less back pain, which can occur in golfers that play often but don’t take the time to work on their back at the gym,” Says Heitz.

6. Stability Ball Chest PressHolding the dumbbells in your hands, lie on

the stability ball with your neck and shoulders resting on it. Keeping your hips in line with your shoulders, press up with the weights touching the dumbbells together at the top, then bring them back down to your shoulders. Do three sets of 12 reps. Keeping your balance on the ball instead of simply lying on a weight bench adds a degree of di culty crucial to the golf game. “In all these exercises, the stability ball provides a way to implement balance and stability into your workout, an aspect many golfers overlook but is very important to the longevity of their game,” said Heitz.

Improve Your Golf Game Through Fitness

Golf is just like any other sport. You need to prepare yourself in the gym before you ever step onto that green.

Even if you’ve never struggled with self-esteem, feeling fabulous all the time can be tough. How can you feel more consistently awesome?

Start good habits. Go to bed a little earlier, wake up at the same time each day, drink more water... all that stu that you know you should do, but don’t. Well, research proves that they work. So give them a try!

Compliment someone every single day. Whether it’s simply letting someone know that they’ve done a good job, telling someone that you love their out t or sharing with someone that you just adore their freckles, you instantly feel better when you tell someone else that they’re awesome.

Sing in your car, in the shower or whenever you’re alone. Whether you’re belting out Top 40 hits or whatever’s on your mp3 player, singing always makes you feel like a rockstar.

Wear a pedometer. Just seeing how many steps you take a day will let you know how you’re improving your life and burning calories. Need a challenge in your life? Set a goal to increase that number.

Eat a better lunch. A nutritious lunch that isn’t too heavy can change your entire afternoon. A salad full of fruits, nuts and veggies will leave you much happier by 3PM than most fast food options. Grab a delicious wrap or tuck into a light soup and sandwich when you’re dining out.

Smile more. Everyone will treat you di erently, and you’ll feel di erent, too!

Remember... you ARE awesome! Seriously, you are. So embrace that awesomeness!

Feel MoreAmazing

“According to the Mayo Clinic, positive thinking is linked to a wide range of health benefi ts, including: longer life span, less stress, increased resistance to the common cold, lower risk of cardiovascular disease-related death” Source: About.com

If you’re having a hard time seeing life in a positive light, it’s time to change the way you think. Your internal dialog can wreck your day if you let negative thoughts rule. So reframe the conversation.

First and foremost, if someone around you is participating in negative talk, see your way out of the conversation. Others’ negativity will always spark your own. If someone is dissing their body, talking bad about someone else or complaining, change the subject or walk away. Don’t let their words in uence your opinions and thoughts.

Whenever you do have your own negative thoughts or talk, freeze. Think about what it is that you’re really upset about. Maybe you’ve let your dislike of someone brew over to being annoyed by everything they do. Or maybe you just dislike yourself today because you goofed something up.

Change your mental direction. If you’re getting yourself down the road, think about

how you can do it better next time or what you can do to x the situation. If there’s nothing you can do, let it go. Similarly, if you’re focusing on something external, either brew up a way to make your life better in spite of the situation or drop it.

If you nd yourself dwelling on a particular topic, it’s time to take some sort of action on it. Ask for advice (without ranting), talk to someone who can change the situation or write in a journal about it.

Follow up with happier thoughts. Mentally compliment yourself or someone else. Take time to appreciate what you’re learning from the situation. If all else fails think “rainbows, puppies and sunshine.”

Think More Positively

As the weather warms, so does your wardrobe, and the 2012 runways for this season are featuring vibrant, hot Color Blocking, with a fresh geometric take on this retro trend. The look incorporates bold solid color pieces that work together in an outfit that makes a statement in new exciting color combinations and design treatments. Color blocking takes simple day dress styles and makes them glam!

This season’s color blocking is designed to flatter the figure, and enhance the design of each piece. A fabulous example of tricking the eye with color blocking are pieces that use vertical blocks of black on the sides of a bold color – in a dress for example - to create the illusion of a dramatically smaller waistline and looking ten pounds lighter!

Hot colors in color blocking modeled for spring are Seafoam, Turquoise, Orange, Coral, Red and Canary Yellow, accented with the ever-present Black, and presenting popular combinations in Aqua/Purple and Coral/Orange.

You can even take this trend to separates, wearing a solid color on top with another contrasting solid on the bottom, tied together with great coordinating accessories.

GEO BLOCKINGDesigners have found a refreshing way to deliver color blocking with a 20’s deco spin by color blocking in geometric designs. Geometric color blocking in fabulous colors gives an exciting, fresh, even sporty look to spring fashion this year, while maintaining a

flattering femininity. You’ll see a lot of Geo-Block in knitwear, from T’s to summer dresses.

A BUILT IN ACCESSORYWith color blocking making the statement for your outfit, the need to over accessorize is diminished - the bold design is like a built in accessory that draws the eye and embellishes your look. But when accessorizing with color blocking, you must stay with the colors of your outfit - introducing another color in in a shoe or bag is too jarring and muddies up the look.

The rule of thumb for accessorizing color blocking is to stick with three colors of the outfit with any accessories you use including jewelry, bags and shoes

Color Blocking doesn’t stop at clothes, and you will see brave bold color blocking in accessories as well. A great way to experiment is to wear a bold color blocked shoe or boot-- worn with a solid outfit-- a perfect way to “put your toe in” this trend.

How to Make MoneyFrom the Internet

If you have an expertise, you can make money on the internet. Even if you’re not an expert, there are lots of ways to cash in online. How?

1.) YouTube - You can monetize your YouTube account and earn income on your videos. Rules apply, but it’s money that comes in without any work from you once the upload is complete.

2.) Your Own Website - If you run a blog, you can use online web ad services to earn money from the views you already garner.

3.) Sell Your Photos - If you’re great with a camera, you can sell high-resolution images to stock photo sites for cash.

4.) Get Crowdsourced - Online contests are being run all the time for a number of needs. If you participate and win, you could earn cash or neat swag.

5.) Become a Reviewer - Some products and companies regularly hire people to review their products. At worst, you can get a free item from the company. At best? You’ll get paid!

6.) Freelance... and Promote Yourself - If you do stuff for a living, you can usually offer those services online and earn money. Say, for instance, that you’re a web designer. You can sometimes pick up jobs online for web designing. Just be sure to let people know that you’re available for hire!

7.) Sell Stuff - If you’re crafty, you can definitely sell your wares online. But you can also make a little money selling the junk you have around the house that you no longer want. There are plenty of venues out there waiting... so go on, sell your stuff!

An increasing number of businesses have begun offering customers a discount

if they pay in cash. If you can pay up front, you can often save as much as 20%! Call ahead to small businesses you patronize to see if they offer this deal.

ProTip

Take a moment, and add up last month’s utility bills. Now imagine if you could make that whopping total a lighter burden to bear. It’s surprisingly easy! A few simple lifestyle changes will make your bills much easier to manage.

First--and this is important--find out how you are billed for your utilities. In many condos and apartments, your utility is billed by building rather than by individual. If you are being billed in this manner, don’t take this as an excuse to throw out these tips--your usage still contributes to the total building usage, so how much you use matters! Sometimes, how your utilities are charged can be negotiated. Ask your housing office for more information. If you like, pass this information along to your housing office and suggest they include it in the next community newsletter!

You may not know that electronic devices use electricity when they are plugged in, even if they’re not running. Unplug everything when not in use. Power down your computer whenever you’re not using it--waiting the extra minute for it to start up will be worth the money you save! As a bonus, this is probably better for your laptop’s battery life.

Install a programmable thermostat. See if your electric company offers this service. A programmable thermostat can set your home to require less heating and cooling during the day while you’re away while getting everything to the perfect

temperature just in time for you to get home.

Clean or change your air filters every three months--more often if you have pets. A dirty air filter causes your central air to work harder, resulting in a higher electric bill. (Interestingly enough, replacing the air filter on your car will help you save money on gasoline!)

Ever think about how your cooking affects your home? If you’re into baking, try doing more of that in the winter. The heat from the oven and all that activity will almost always cause you to turn off the heat. But baking in the summer? You’ll run the air conditioning double-duty. Try not to bake as often in the summer months. If you’ve got to use the oven, do so in the evening when you can open a window to cool off.

If you’re a homeowner, you have some unique opportunities to save money. Evaluate your insulation to ensure it’s doing all it can to save you money. Fix poorly sealed windows and doorways. See if upgrading your appliances to more efficient ones will result in long-term savings.

Shorten your showers. And don’t run the water while you brush your teeth. And turn off the lights when you leave a room. All that stuff you’ve been told since you were a toddler? Yep. Do that! Every little change you make can add up to some money saved at the end of the month.

How to Save MoneyOn Your Utility Bills

Want to give to charity, but running low on funds? There’s

a lot you can do that won’t cost much! Get involved, write

grants, help with organization fund raisers, ask your friends

for donations, market the cause, set aside a monthly

budget to save for one donation a year... the possibilities

are limitless! Just get active and ask how you can help!

LexScene Magazine | 34 | www.LexScene.com LexScene Magazine | 35 | www.LexScene.com

Create and control a budget. Decide how much you should spend per month on your expenses and stick to that. There are a lot of websites that can help, notably Mint.com. Figuring out how much you must spend, how much you can spend on entertainment and how much money you should have left over each month will assist you in figuring out how much of your money can go toward saving.

If you have a large amount of expense in proportion to your income, it’s time to make cuts. See where you’re spending a lot of money and see where you can start spending less right away. Now, make a plan for spending far less a year from now. Whether that means spending less on rent or spending less on dining out, make a plan that lets you transition into spending more wisely while still affording the lifestyle you want.

If you have a 401(k) plan, awesome. Contribute as much as you can, at least as much as your company will match. There is a maximum you can contribute, so be aware of where that line is. If you don’t have a 401(k) plan, set up an IRA. Automatic monthly payments towards this are key. The amount leaves your check before you ever get the money, so you don’t miss the money.

Take a look at your debt. Make a plan to get rid of that, as well. A great way to start taking care of credit card debt is to stop relying so heavily on your credit card. Use a bank card to take care of your purchases. If you’re paying on student loans, consider paying a little more than the minimum payment if you’re able. The only debt that you probably should expect to get rid of any more quickly would be your home loan. Unless you have a lot of extra income, your payments are probably set at the right amount. But, if you get a nice bonus from work, consider putting that toward your loan to help take care of that a little more quickly.

If this is all very confusing for you, you are experiencing financial hardship or you feel in over your head with debt, seek a financial consultant. They will help you sort out your finances, figure out where you’re spending too much and assist you in deciding how to save for the future.

Generally speaking, a nice target amount to save is 10-15% of your gross income. If that isn’t financially possible for you, this may be a sign that your finances need some reconsidering. Putting this amount away requires some discipline, but if you take a moment to look at the bigger picture, it’s worthwhile!

Purchasing a cigar without having had the chance to smoke the particular brand can be a daunting task. You don’t want to watch your money go up in smoke for a stick that you don’t find enjoyable in the least. Here are some tips to arm yourself before you head to the shop.

Before we get into the meat of the matter, repeat after me: “Smoke what you like, like what you smoke.” This creed will make the journey easier. Don’t let anybody tell you what to smoke.

First, let’s deal with what they look like. Cigars are always measured in inches and by ring gauge--the higher the ring gauge, the thicker diameter of the cigar. There plenty of vitolas (combinations of length and gauge,) and I encourage you to try as many as you can. After smoking hundreds of cigars, I still find myself wanting to try a cigar I love--or even one I hated--in a different shape.

The classic cigar shape is a robusto. The stature is roughly five inches long by fifty ring gauge. The average robusto smokes for about an hour and a half. Most cigars have the general shape of a robusto. If you find yourself pressed for time, smoke something smaller, such as a corona. Coronas are baby robustos and will shave thirty to forty five minutes

Choosing the Right Cigar

LexScene Magazine | 37 | www.LexScene.com

o the average smoke time of a robusto. Conversely, if you want to smoke for longer and build upon the avors you taste by the time your robusto is nished, try a Churchill sized cigar; they have the same ring gauge and are about two to three inches longer. Flavor-wise, if you want something bolder, try a toro. Something more concentrated? Smoke a torpedo, which features a conical end that will change the way the smoke meets your mouth. Depending on what particular brand you are smoking, the avors among di erent cigars in the family will either vary greatly or end up being the same no matter which shape you choose.

The wrapper is the outermost leaf of tobacco on your cigar. This is hand rolled around a compressed stick of tobacco containing a binder and ller tobacco. The wrapper provides a majority of the avor you taste when you smoke. The wrapper is usually how the cigar is identi ed in terms of avor. However, there are exceptions. You have natural wrappers which are lightly colored--they tend to be used on medium-bodied cigars. The dark Maduro wrapper has more sugars in the leaf and tends to be used to add sweetness to full-bodied cigars. While wrappers have plenty of names and colors, avor generalizations can be made.

I equate it to how you like your co ee. For instance, if you enjoy cream and sugar, a natural wrapper (possibly a Connecticut shade grown) will suit you. If you drink your co ee black or with a little sugar, a Maduro would be your preference. Smoke a few of

di erent hues and determine which is your preference.

When it comes to the guts of your cigar, every manufacturer has their secret blend of ller. This blend usually consists of three grades of tobacco: Volado, Seco, and Ligero. Volado is taken from the bottom of the plant, which gets little or no sun, and is lightly avored. The Seco is sourced from the middle of the plant and o ers a good, dry middle ground. Lastly, the Ligero is the boldest and most full- avored tobacco that comes from the top and gets most of the sun. These are blended to make a pleasurable smoke and then wrapped in a binder, which is usually the same tobacco as the wrapper, just not of the same visual quality. There is only one way to determine what your ideal ller blend is and that is to smoke a lot of di erent brands and types of cigar.

With this basic knowledge you can now nd something in close proximity of your preference. Take your time when purchasing cigars. If you’re buying them o the internet, all the information will be there in front of you to decide. If you’re in a shop, ask for the details. Don’t be afraid to try something di erent based on what you’ve smoked in the past.

And remember, smoke what you like, like what you smoke.

MARCHING ONIt’s that magical time of year, when all of Lexington seems to be a sea of blue. Fans from all across the country ll Rupp’s hallowed halls and cheer at the top of their lungs. Work comes to a grinding halt as the tournament brackets get closer and closer to Number 1. So what’s a fan to do but get wrapped up in all that is March in Kentucky?

BASKETBALL CUPCAKESBake your cupcakes according to the box’s instructions in white cupcake cups. Let cool COMPLETELY.Frost your cupcake with white frosting. Use the back of a butter knife to smoothe the icing down and around so that you get a nice dome shape. Dip the cupcake frosting-side-down in a bowl of orange decorator’s sugar. If you don’t get a good coat, use a spoon to shake more sugar onto the cupcake. Using a tube of black decorator’s icing, draw basketball stripes on top.

MAKE IT MORE FABMake rectangle-shaped sugar cookies or bust into a box of graham crackers. Cover the surface of the cookie/cracker with white icing. To get a smooth finish, melt white icing in the microwave for a few seconds. Use a red tube of decorator’s icing to make the rectangle look like a backboard. Press into the cupcake. Now it looks like your cupcake is getting dunked!

Prepping a PartyGetting a basketball viewing party together can actually be a pretty daunting task. How do you make it amazing without making yourself nuts?First, remember that you’re all there for the same reason--the game! Make seating comfortable and plenty, with a great view of the TV.Next, gather snacks. Prep a few homemade goodies, but don’t go overboard--run out and grab some quick, satisfying eats and drinks. Finally, make sure you have pregame and post-game entertainment. Music, video/board games and cards should do the trick!

Enjoying the Game! For a fan, experiencing the game is more important than who wins or loses--well, not really, but getting to enjoy your team is a big deal.

So how can you make the most of game day?

Head to RuppThis is the big duh, but also one of the most difficult things for a fan to manage, sometimes. Getting tickets can be hard, but never impossible. Get resourceful and get as close to courtside as you can manage. It’s truly an experience not to be missed!

Go Out to See the GameGo to a restaurant or bar that has TVs and great eats to make seeing the game as awesome as possible.Of course, there’s more to it than just showing up and ordering a few drinks. Bring your favorite fellow fans and make a whole afternoon of it. Have dinner and have fun!

Sport the ColorsIf you’re not covered in Blue, how on Earth will everyone know who you’re rooting for? Nevermind if you accidentally wear the other team’s color... you’re likely to get booed!

Do it on the SlySo, you’re stuck at work and you’re dying to know the status of your bracket. How does a fan manage, without getting fired?First, sign up for text alerts from ESPN. Run streaming games in the background with your earbuds in. Most importantly? Keep it in per-spective. Is keeping up with the play-by-play worth your job?No. The answer is no. Seriously. It’s not. I don’t care how much you have in the pool!

There is an art to being a true fan. From hopeless devotion to team stats to showing up for every game, there’s a lot you can do to BE a fan. But looking like a fan takes a little work. Sure, it’s easy to put on a team t-shirt and call it a day, but if you want to take it to a whole ‘nother level, here’s some tips.

While you don’t HAVE to paint your whole body, body paint is a great way to let everyone know what you’re all about. For newbs, start with your face. Paint a logo or number on your cheek. For the more daring fan, cover your whole face in blue and white.

Wearing a shirt or jersey is a ne way to show your support, but why not take it a step further? A jacket, some jewelry, pants, hats, shoes... there’s a whole world of team apparel waiting! If you have kids, don’t forget to deck them out with team-approved duds!

Got a sweet ride? Use it to show o your love for the team! Decals, ags and stickers show everyone on the road where you’re headed.

If you’re hosting some basketball viewing parties in your home, be sure your rooms get a little fan makeover. Posters of the team and other memorabilia set the tone for your party.

And what about the o ce? Declare yourself a fan with a little memorabilia on your desk. Stick some air up so your coworkers know what’s on your mind.

Looking like a fan is as essential to life in March as BEING a fan. You’d hate for someone to confuse your team allegiance in this crucial moment, wouldn’t you? Go on, show your support everywhere you go! This is the one time of year that we’ll allow it without question.

Hannah Ellis

LexScene Magazine | 102 | www.LexScene.com LexScene Magazine | 61 | www.LexScene.com

Name: Hannah EllisBirth Date: August 14, 1990Hometown: Campbellsville, KYNames of All Band Members: Hannah Ellis, Brandon Holder, John McHugh, Tony HammonsStyle you prefer: Country/Pop

Background of the Performer: I grew up in a small town in Central Kentucky called Campbellsville. I was always very active in the community, singing every time I got the chance. From everything to talent shows and church or school show choirs I was extremely involved. I was the state talent winner in FFA and a lot of opportunities to perform opened up from that. The more I did, the more I knew... this is what I want to do.

What Inspires your song/song writing: I can be inspired by anything from a situation I have been through in the past, to a current relationship, to something I see someone else going through. It is really a lot about where you are as a person that day and the mood and what you are feeling. I am not the type that can walk into a co-write all bubbly and sit down and write a tearjerker. I have to feel what I am saying so the audience can too.

Who’s Your Music Icon: As cliché as it may seem I am enamored by Taylor Swift. She has brought a completely new element of entertainment to the industry that wasn’t there before her. She is a showman and is right there with her fans. She makes them feel like they are understood by her lyrics and that is what we are all looking for in the music we listen to; someone who we can relate to.

Where do you play: I have played everywhere from the hometown restaurant to Conseco Fieldhouse to Tin Roof in Lexington to the Black Gold Festival where I opened for Jake Owen. I feel comfortable on any stage and love getting invited to new venues. I have also done shows at Austin City Saloon, The Grapevine and even ventured to Nashville to play at the Cadillac Ranch.

Most Difficult Challenge for a Singer/Band Member: I believe the most challenging part

would be playing all the different roles. You have to lead your group with confidence while maintaining a sense of humble adoration for all those who contribute their talents to your show. I am not only the vocalist but I have to be an all around performer as well. I have to bring it all out on the stage for every single show no matter how big or small the crowd is and give them a show worth seeing. Off stage you have to be the songwriter as well. You have to put together the music and set lists that will create a sense of endearment between you and the fans. Although it is difficult to juggle all these roles, it adds an element to being a performer that maybe wouldn’t be there without those challenges.

Dreams/Aspirations: I am ultimately looking to perform full time. I have put together a group of guys that are phenomenal musicians and have as much drive and passion about this industry as I do.

Available CD Locations: I have CD’s available on my website www.hannahellismusic.com, on iTunes, at CD Central beside Pazzos and at Austin City Saloon as well.

1 Thing People Don’t Know about Local Bands: Just how much talent there is around here. I’ve had a chance to work with a lot of very solid musicians around Lexington.

Why Lexington: Well for starters, I am a student at UK so playing shows hear in Lexington is a great choice due to the venues available and the college age group allows for my target audience to be reached.

Does Lexington have something other cities don’t offer: Well the fact that it is a huge college town in the south definitely helps with the appreciation of a young female country artist. Also unlike Nashville, an up and coming college girl turned musician is more of a novelty.

Although there

are definitely other very talented young ladies in this city, I believe they would agree that the fighting for a chance in the spotlight is much less cutthroat in a city like Lexington.

Business Advice: Being an Artist/Entertainer is my business; I have to work at it everyday. It’s like any other business, the harder you work at it the better the product you have to offer. I have been told many times, “People won’t pay to come hear you sing, they will pay to be entertained.”

Personal Advice: Do what you love, and love what you do. Although the industry I have chose to be a part of is extremely tough, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I get to make music everyday and nothing in this world makes me happier. I chose a profession that I will never get tired of, thus I never have to “work” a day in my life.

Financial Advice: “Don’t eat your seed corn.” My dad always said that growing up and it made no sense to me, but as I have grown up I see that he meant just because you make good money at a show doesn’t mean go spend it all the next day. Instead of going out and buying new clothes after a show, most of the money earned goes back into the growing business that is Hannah Ellis Music. If you keep putting back more than you take out, your business w i l l grow exponentially.
