Touch Football

On the 7th August, two boys’ touch football teams travelled to Lyrebird Park, Nowra and competed in the NSW Touch Years 7/8 All School Regional Qualifier. The boys’ A team placed 2nd and the boys’ B team placed 5th. The girls’ team also was placed 2nd. All teams played well and had a good attitude for the games. The top try scores were John Reteza for boys’ B. PE teacher, Mr Roberts, said all the teams showed improvement throughout the day and some individuals really stood out for Moruya.

District and Regional Athletics

Thirteen students travelled to Bruce Stadium, Canberra on August 1st to compete in the Regional Athletics. It was a great day and we received lots of fantastic results. Five students achieved places in events, and these people were: Alexander Connolly, who placed 4th in discus; Aiden McNamara who placed 5th in discus; Sarah Hemler 3rd in discus; Sam Young was 6th in 1500m and Jaylah Han-cock-Cameron is heading off to compete in the New South Wales CHS carnival for 800m in Sydney on September 3rd. Congratulations to all the competitors and we wish Jaylah the best of luck!

Boys’ Basketball

Mr Douglas took the under 15 boys’ basketball team to Bega to compete in three games on Friday 8th August. The team consisted of Matt Kennedy (captain), Riley Kember, Yosko Polat, Ranko Po-lat, Zac Southwell, Sam Jackson, Rory Shepherdson, Paul Ker, Ethan Wong and Aiden Macnamara.

In the first game they played Bombala and beat them 22-7, but unfortunately they were defeated 19-11 by Eden. The team then went to beat Bega 26-20. The Semi-finals against Narooma was a tough game that they unfortunately lost 34-14 to Narooma.

All the boys played really well and had an excellent time. Mr Douglas is proud of all the boys espe-cially Aiden Macnamara who had never played before and had an outstanding natural ability for the game. He would also like to thank Mr Polat and Dave Kennedy for helping with transport. Thank you to Mr Douglas for organising and coaching the team.

Year 12 students are approaching the end of their final school term – on-ly two weeks to go in fact.

At this stage we are organising a breakfast and formal assembly for their scheduled last day which will be Friday 19th September. The assembly should commence at the beginning of Period 2 around 10.05 am so if parents and/or family members are available then you are most welcome to join us.

After the assembly the students will be free to leave and whatever ar-rangements they make after that will be of a private and personal nature and not associated with the school.

HSC examinations commence on Monday October 13th so they have a three week period to make their final preparations. A reminder also to parents and students that if anything goes wrong – either illness or misadventure – please get in touch with us at the earliest opportunity. The earlier we know the better chance we have of assisting you with an ap-peal to the Board of Studies.

I believe the Year 12 students are planning to hold their formal celebrations after the com-pletion of the HSC examinations and in the meantime I wish them all the very best of good fortune and success. John Walsh

Fifty Word Stories

8A recently had the difficult task of writing a fifty word story. Here are two examples of the stories that were produced.

The Fear Feeding Monster

She ran down the winding tunnel. She sprinted as fast as she could, nearly slamming into the walls. It crept behind her, following her every step, turn and movement. It fed on her fear, growing stronger as she grew more scared. She turned, not afraid and the monster shrivelled up. By Chelsea Rowley

Adventure

We inched our way along the narrow, dark passage, to hear the sound of rushing water. Once we had emerged from the cave, through blinding light we saw it. The waterfall. Its cascading white folds of water gushing into small pools.

We had made it here alive. “Finally,” I said. By Pia Provera Gray

Kiola Science Excursion

Thanks to the Australian National University, around fifty Yr 8 students were invited to attend the Kiola Scientist Excursion on Tuesday 19th August. They were met by other schools, including Batemans Bay and Ulladulla High, and went to different places around the Kiola complex participating in various activities, experiments and lectures delivered by real scientists.

A delicious barbecue lunch was prepared for the students and the day went smoothly, despite the rainy weather. The students thor-oughly enjoyed the day and would all like to thank Mr Halverson and Mr Norris for organising the trip and helping out on the day.

Girls AFL

Twenty girls from Moruya High School Yrs 7-10 travelled to Hanging Rock at Batemans Bay to play AFL against Lumen Christi Catholic College on Wednesday 23rd July. Although the Moruya High girls had two blood noses and one broken finger during the day, it was worth it as they came out on top, winning 38-10.

The girl’s next game against Daramalan college, the ACT champions, was held on Wednesday 6th August which Moruya High won 63-41.

Moruya High School then had their two games in Blacktown cancelled because of bad weather. The School would like to thank Ms Bonner for organising the team and volunteer referees Lucas White and Tom Holder.

Girls Soccer

The Moruya High School Open Girls Soccer team played their last game of the year against Warilla High School on the 3rd September at Wollongong to decide the South Coast Champion. Unfortunately Moruya High School lost 4-2 but the game was very close and could have gone either way. The result of the game means that Moruya High School are now South Coast B Champions. Well done girls!

Mrs Johnson would like to thank all of the girls who participated in the school soccer team at any time throughout the year. A big thank you also goes to Michelle Zabel and Jenny McKenzie for driving the team to Wollongong and back. The girls associated with the school soccer team would all like to thank Mrs Johnson for organising, managing and coaching the team throughout the year.

Cows Create Careers

Cows Create Careers is a Dairy Australia competition involving high schools in twenty-two dairying regions across the country. Year Nine Agriculture and Food Technology classes are currently participating in the program.

Agricultural Technology students were responsible for the day-to-day care of “Ryanetta” and “JoJo”, two Holstein Fresian heifer calves. The class was very sorry to see them go, but they know they will be joining the Evans’ milking herd when they grow up and will be providing us with all our delicious dairy products including milk, cream, cheese, yoghurt and butter. The Agriculture class are also making movies or 3D models based around the dairy industry. The agriculture students are looking forward to the presentation ceremony and games to be held at Bermagui in Term 4.

Food Technology students became involved in the study of dairy manufacturing by following the design process in creating and pho-tographing a dairy recipe as well as producing a newsletter on a topic related to dairy technology. Each team, after making and pho-tographing their recipe, digitally designed the recipe to make a school recipe book. It also contains nutritional panels, hints and pho-tographs. The same teams produce a newsletter from one of the following topics; dairy nutrition, dairy processing, dairy internation-al trade, dairy domestic market or innovative dairy technology. The students learnt about the variety of careers available throughout the dairy industry. These students are competing with other high schools within the southern area for the best recipes and newslet-ters. The students are looking forward to sharing in the presentation day on the 3rd November at Bega.

Moruya High School would like to thank the teachers involved with the Cows Create Careers program for giving these students such a fun and educational experience.
