A Christmas Journey

4

A Christmas Journey - InstructionsTravel with Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus as they journey to Bethlehem and Egypt and back to Nazareth.Answer questions based on the nativity story and their flight to Egypt. Map games are great for helpingkids to get familiar with the geography of the Bible lands.

Ages: approximately 7 to 12

Number of Players: 2 to 4

How to Play1. Shuffle the question cards and place them face-down on the board.2. Shuffle the event cards and place them face-down on the board.3. Roll a die to decide who goes first.4. Find something to use as playing pieces (counters, buttons, etc). Put the playing pieces on Nazareth to

start. Move clockwise around that board (so, from Nazareth, head down along the river to Bethlehem).5. The first player rolls one die and moves the resulting number of places towards Bethlehem.

· If he lands on a question square, one of the other players should draw the top question card and askhim the question. If he answers incorrectly, he misses his next turn. Return the card to the bottom ofthe pile. Play moves to the next person.

· If he lands on an event square, he draws the top event card and follows the directions. Return thecard to the bottom of the pile. Play then moves to the next person.

6. The first person to get back to Nazareth is the winner.

NotesSome questions have several possible answers, or could be answered in different ways – if the given answeris Biblically correct then it should be accepted even if it is not the particular answer given on the card.

The parent or teacher should decide how much detail is required for an answer (e.g. for the question "Whatis a census?" which has answer "A census is a way for a government to collect information about all thepeople in a country, like their names, ages, income, etc.", you might want to accept "A census is when theking counts the people" or anything else that is basically correct).

Scripture references are given for reference only – players are not expected to give them as part of their an-swer. (By the way, if you find any errors, please let me know so that I can correct them. Thanks!)

You might want to set a time limit for answering.

If the children are still learning the story and need a bit of help, you could allow them to use a Bible to lookup the answers for the first few times that you play. It would probably be helpful to read the story from theBible before playing the game: Matthew 1:18 to Matthew 2:23 and Luke 1:5 to Luke 2:40.

Making the GameGame boardSet your printer margins as small as possible.

Print pages 6 to 9 (the game board). It is useful to first print off a draft copy so that you can cut out the piec-es and see how they will fit together.

Cut out the board pieces and then stick them together with clear tape, overlapping each edge by about 5mmto match the sections properly.

To make the board stronger you can either laminate the pages before cutting them out, or stick the complet-ed game-board onto a large piece of light-weight card (and perhaps cover it in clear plastic contact paper).

Question and event cards

Back: Print out 2 copies of the event card backing page (the yellow one, page 10) and 3 copies of the ques-tion card backing page (the green one, page 11). Find some light-weight card (e.g. a cereal box) that is bigenough to fit the pages. Using a glue stick (not a liquid glue as it will crinkle the paper), cover the back ofeach page with glue (it needs to be well covered or else the paper will peel off the card when the playingcards are cut out). Stick the pages onto the card (stick them on the printed side of a cereal box so that thetext pages can be stuck on the plain side), rubbing carefully with your hands or the edge of a ruler to smoothout the paper. Place a heavy book over each page and allow them to dry completely. Cut the card to thesize of each page.

Front: Print pages 12 to 16 (the question and event cards). Do NOT cut these out yet. Stick the questionpages to the other side of the card used above (so that the questions/events show on one side and the back-ing shows on the other side), making sure that the event cards have the yellow backing, and that the ques-tion cards have the green backing. Place a heavy book over each page and allow them to dry completely. The book helps prevent the pages from curling as they dry. Once the pages are dry, cut the pages into sepa-rate playing cards.

For a more professional result, print on both sides of thick, good quality paper – making sure that the eventcards have the yellow background printed on the other side of the paper, and that the question cards havethe green background on their backs). Now laminate the pages and cut out the playing cards, rounding thecorners slightly so they will not be too sharp.

Printing TipsTo print a PDF file, click on the “File” menu and choose “Print” (or click the print button on the toolbar). The Print Dialog Box appears. Make any necessary choices and then click “Ok” to print.

You do not need to print the whole of the PDF file, only the pages you want to use. It is often easier to use“Print Range: Current Page” (which only prints the page you’re looking at) or to list the page numbers youwish to print in the “Print Range: Pages” box (e.g. type: 2, 4, 6-9 to print pages 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9).
