What are LBS?• Cell-phone-centric definition

– a way to send custom advertising and other information to cell-phone subscribers based on their current location (Wikipedia)

• Generalized definition – Service customized to given locations– It begs 3 questions!

– Problem-specific, e.g. distance to highway or water

• Understanding of a physical phenomenon– Though, final model may not involve location

• Cause-effect e.g. Cholera caused by germs

– Reverse Geo-coder: coordinates place name4. Presentation Service portrays a map

– a base map derived from any geospatial data – and a set of Abstract Data Types as overlays

5. Route Service – determines travel routes and navigation information between two or more places
