Term 1 / Week 6 / 4 March 2020 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Charity for bush fires student leaders Willoughby’s sister council is Gwydir Shire Council which is a farming and livestock community who have been affected by drought and the recent bushfires. Mowbray Public School has agreed to help support Bingara Central School which is located in the Gwydir Council. Bingara has 111 Stage 2 & 3 students. Money raised will go to support all Bingara Central School students to attend educational excursions in 2020. At our welcome BBQ our student leaders collected money for Bingara Central School. They raised $90 which is a fantastic start! Thank you to our parent/carer community for your generosity. SRC training day Our Semester One 2020 SRC participated in their training day last week on Monday 24 February. The students discussed ideas on how to improve our school through Mowbray initiatives, as well as discussing ways to make our local, national and global community better. We look forward to their plans for 2020 being supported by Miss Foster and Ms Bradshaw. Clean up Australia Day (Clean up Mowbray) Last Friday our students participated in a local ‘clean up Mowbray’ afternoon to participate in the clean up Australia Day project. The grounds looked beautiful on Friday afternoon! It would be wonderful to keep our grounds as neat as possible all the time. As a school we play music (with a reduce, reuse, recycle message) every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to remind the children to look around and put any extra rubbish in the bin. We would ask that parents/carers keep the reduce, reuse, recycle message in mind when they are packing school lunches. If we can reduce the use of packaging, it will be very noticeable for our school grounds. Lost Property Lost property tubs are located at the bottom of the blue stairwell. We would encourage everyone to label all items (especially hats, jumpers, drink bottles and lunch boxes) with your child’s name and class. This gives the lost item a much better chance of being returned. Parents/carers are always welcome to come and check for lost items in the tubs. Lunch boxes that are not named will be disposed of weekly as this poses a health risk. Oval it’s nearly open and ready for use Our oval is expected to open this Thursday/Friday for all our students to enjoy. It has been a long wait, but if you look at the grass, it is definitely worth it! A big Thank You goes to Willoughby Council for their funding and organisation of the project. The oval will not be used for organised public sports (e.g. soccer/cricket) until the end of the month. Term 1 Week 6 4 March 2020

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT The school oval is not one of the council approved dog off-leash areas and dogs are not allowed on-site from 7:30am – 6:30pm. The cricket net project will start in the next few weeks. This will mean that the back section of the oval will be fenced, but the rest of the oval will stay open. Invoices The Term 1 invoices have recently been sent via email to parents/carers. These invoices include payments required for student supplies, including subscriptions, text books and excursions. Please be assured that all efforts are made by the school to get the best possible price, including using department contracts as well as buying in bulk. If you are in need of financial assistance or a payment plan, please do not hesitate to contact me via the school number 9428 3200 to talk over the phone or arrange a meeting. We can discuss options in the strictest confidence. CAROLINE ALFORD PRINCIPAL

SCHOOL NEWS

SRC Training Day

On Monday 24th February 2020 the Semester 1 SRC Representatives completed the SRC Training

Day. On SRC training day we developed our skills in team building, resilience/perseverance, creative

thinking, problem solving and verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

We had to use a tonne of resilience and team building in all of the activities. The resilience and

perseverance activities were extra challenging because all of the cards we used to make a card

tower kept falling down over and over again!

We really liked the first ‘getting to know you’ activity we completed. It was a bit like Guess Who! We

also really enjoyed the creative thinking game! It was so fun!

To finish off the day we did some action planning in groups to plan for Semester 1 fundraising and

event ideas.

Ice Blocks

The selling of ice blocks will be every Friday this term at 2nd half lunch near the hall.

SRC representatives will be running this weekly event. Ice blocks cost $1 each.

Thank you,

Scarlett W and Indigo F (Year 4 SRC Representatives)

LIBRARY NEWS

Parents/Carers Volunteers Needed - Tuesday-Friday

We are needing some help in the library. We would love some help at

9.10am to help return and shelve books for about 15-20 minutes. Pre-

schoolers welcome!

Also, if there are some keen book coverers we would love some help

covering our new books. There is a choice between plastic contact and

plastic wrap covering. All materials supplied.

Come along and collect a few books to cover at home.

Premier Reading Challenge (PRC)

The 2020 NSW PRC commenced this week and runs until mid-August.

Reminder:

All K-2 Students will participate in the challenge during school time.

3-6 students participate in this optional challenge at home. Parent encouragement and support will enhance your child’s reading experience and success. Students need to read 20 books to fulfil the challenge requirements (over a duration of six months).

The PRC reading booklist is very extensive with over 10,000 books so there is plenty of choice and

variety. Reading for pleasure and “free choice” are key factors for reading success. For each

year group stage there is age appropriate short reads, picture books, information books and chapter

books. New titles are added this year and an additional 600 have just been added. For example:-
