October 2019

The national Tidy Towns results for 2019 were announced on Monday 30th

September. The overall winners were Glaslough with 346 marks. Lucan

achieved another bronze medal, our third in a row with a really fine total of

322 points, up a magnificent 10 from 2018. We were only four points short

of a silver medal. In fact, we scored better than Glaslough in two of the

eight categories!

Thanks to all who helped achieve this result, particularly our intrepid volunteers, who come out Saturday

mornings from February to November and in the summertime in the evenings as well. Thanks also to our

supporters in the community, in the schools, and in South Dublin Council.

Lucan Newsletter congratulates Lucan Tidy Towns on another great achievement! The Judges remarks:

Community – Your Planning and Involvement

You have a relatively small number of people

involved in your committee and volunteering for

your population category, but you are completing

a large volume of appropriate work. Your

multiyear plan is well researched and written. You

have a good relationship with local schools. It

would be of benefit to your adjudicator if your

entry was stapled or bound in some other manner

as it is a bit precarious travelling around to projects with a loose sheet application. On your

map maybe indicate the limit of the area covered

as you mention it is not the whole of Lucan. As a

suggestion, in your application form please start

each category with your new projects (N), then

the maintained projects (M) and finally the future

projects (FP). Number all the projects

sequentially (don’t restart numbering in each

category). Then use the number of each new

project in the application form on the map and

map legend as appropriate. Some projects won’t

be marked on the map. You could also highlight what category each project is in. This makes it

very clear what projects are new, where to find

them on the ground and the information in your

application form and makes it less likely that your

adjudicator will miss anything. You can indicate

landmarks on the map with letters or another

symbol other than numbers.

Streetscape & Public Places

Lucan is blessed with a fine and well-maintained

built environment which complemented by a

wonderful natural environment. The core

maintains its village feel, with its central village

green surrounded by many wonderful well-

maintained buildings. Old buildings are put to

new uses. The tamed Paddy Power sign almost looked like a post office and the local Garda

station was very well presented with a fine willow

and birch tree. Despite it not being lived in, The

School Masters House did not stand out for the

wrong reasons. It is obvious many business

premises take great pride in their shop front

displays and maintenance of their buildings. The

new ramp and bike racks blend in very well and

must be a welcome addition to all who use them.

On the Lucan Newlands road, what could have

been a long boring pebble dash wall is broken up with natural stone infills, which helps to visually

transform what would otherwise be a dull edge.

Green Spaces and Landscaping

Your work on the edge of the footpath along the Lucan road was admired. The open space

between the Lucan Road and the Lucan Newlands

road is a pleasant open space so close to the

village core. You maintenance of the lower

portion is appropriate for its location. I wondered

if it is possible to upgrade the steps, railing and

fencing leading down to the Lucan Road. There

are some overhanging branches here and

elsewhere also that could be trimmed back as they

block the pathway. In your tree planting make

sure to keep a minimum of 1m radius around all trees free from weeds and grass. This will help

the tree to grow strong and vigorous and also stop

lawnmower decks and strimmers rubbing up

against the trees which can and usually does lead

to their death a number of years later. The

planting outside the Circle K petrol station looked

wonderful. There is a dead Field Maple outside

St Andrews Church which should really be

replaced or brought to the attention of the

appropriate authority. The paving detail here

looked really well.

Nature and Biodiversity in your Locality

The management of the grass for pollinators at the

entrance to Ardeen Estate was encouraging to see. It could be used as an awareness raising

opportunity also with the addition of a “Managed

for Wildlife” sign from the National Pollinator

Plan. This sign would inform passers-by and

passing motorists of the reason why the grass is

left long. I presume many motorists are stuck in

traffic at this location at different times of the day

and may be curious about the management of this

area. The planting and management opposite the

Roselawn estate also was encouraging to see.

Again at this location motorists and pedestrians will be stopped at the pedestrian crossing. The

lettering on the sign could do with a re paint.

It is recommended that Tidy Town groups do a

habitat map of what they have and look at best

practice management for the different habitats.

The Heritage Council has a Conserving and

Enhancing Wildlife in Towns and Villages guide

which outlines 10 habitats generally found and

management of the same. You could do a simple

map marking in the different habitats listed in the

guide and then use this for your own use and for

inclusion in this competition.

Sustainability – Doing more with less You have listed a number of different projects

under this heading to include water conservation,

transport, climate action, plastic reduction and

composting. A great source of inspiration is

https://localprevention.ie/tidy-towns/.

What some groups also find beneficial is to break

down this category into waste, water, energy and transport categories and to cover all 4 sub

categories each year with new and continuing

projects. Keep an eye on the value of small

interventions that many people can do to make a

change (e.g. Stop Food Waste Challenge). Also

keep track of the accumulative savings made over

the years and keep your adjudicator informed.

Consider putting Greener Cleaning/ Gardening

and Luscious Leftovers (www.stopfoodwaste.ie)

links and ideas up on your Facebook page at

regular intervals.

Tidiness and Litter Control

Well done in tackling the mentioned black spot and taking part in the National Spring Clean. It is

always encouraging to see a mix of ages involved

in clean ups and the photos of the work at Ardeen

speaks volumes. You have also been involved in

signage cleaning and a successful river clean up.

The election poster free campaign is encouraging

also.

Other groups have organised an “Adopt a Spot”

campaign where individuals pledge to clean up a

short section, say their boundary properties and a

bit more. Similar initiatives and have found that

this motivate others to contribute as they feel that they are not the only ones and that each bit will

add up to a big area that is maintained. Maybe

run a campaign to see if you can get others to

make a pledge to Adopt a Spot.

Residential Streets & Housing Areas

Other communities run estate competitions based

around the Tidy Town competition with awards

for best landscaping, best pollinator planting, best

wildlife project, best estate, most improved, best

sustainable project etc. Some areas could maybe

allow go a little more “wild” to increase

biodiversity. A great source for wildlife gardening

is http://www.wlgf.org/ or No Nettles Required, The Truth About Wildlife Gardening by Ken

Thompson. Maybe start to map these

interventions so you can simply show your

adjudicator your progress over the years.

Approach Roads, Streets & Lanes

Your approach roads looked well on adjudication

day and the painted communication box caught

the eye with its wildlife theme. Areas where there

is a wide margin of grass, maybe consider only

cutting ¾ times a year or leave as a meadow with

a short grass edge. These areas would benefit

from a simple sign indicating that it is managed

for wildlife.

Concluding Remarks:

It was a pleasure visiting Lucan and I wish you

well with your plans for the future.

Nagarhope’s Church Gate

Collection last weekend, at both St. Mary’s and

St. Patrick’s churches, totalled €3,460. Our

sincere thanks to all those who so generously

donated to the collection, which will greatly help

Nagarhope’s work in Nepal, under the leadership

of Lucan man Fachtna “Doc” Clandillon. This

money goes directly to Nagarhope’s work in

Nepal. Our school, Nagarhope Basic School, in

Sathikurya, is going from strength to strength.

The gospel story of Lazarus and the rich man last

weekend seemed so appropriate. Thanks to both

churches for allowing this collection. Thanks also

to our loyal collectors at both churches. Thanks to

the newsletter for their continued support.

Big Congratulations to our

Tidy Towns Group this week – 3 Bronze in a row!

We couldn’t not publish the

Judges

Report, they

did so well.

And that is why we have had to

cut short some reports this week – we’ll make it up next week.

We’ve heard great reports about last Monday’s

National Enterprise Awards when many of

Lucan’s groups gathered for a meeting with

judges. We didn’t manage to make it ourselves,

but wish all involved the very best of luck!

Still no sign of the path, wall and roadway

being fixed up along the demesne opposite Maxol

– it’s a few months gone since the wall / footpath

collapsed! Whose baby is it anyway?

Very high Ramps installed alongside the playing

fields in Hillcrest recently. They will take a bit of

getting use to, but there’s no doubt they are

needed on that site.

Boys in Green got back on track on Thursday.

Media were a bit harsh on them

last weekend – some of the

reporters didn’t look too cool in that awful humidity!

They have a good break now

before they face Samoa – Coybig!

Lorenzo is blowing our way as we go to print.

Water already very high in the Liffey following

all the rain. Be

careful around trees,

which are very heavy

with leaves at the

moment. Hopefully we’ll escape the

worst of it! We really don’t need to meet that

fellow!

John Mills R.I.P. We were saddened to learn of the death of John

Mills this week. John helped out delivering Lucan

Esker Educate Together Historical School Tour

I just wanted to say many thanks to Helen Farrell

from the Society for Old Lucan for visiting us, in

4th class in Esker ETNS, last Wednesday

morning. She shared all her wonderful historical

stories about Lucan with the children. She then

brought them on a walking tour of some local

historical sites. The children learned so much during that time and it brought History to life for

them.

Helen and the Society for Old Lucan are doing so

much to keep historical sites in Lucan from

slipping into further disrepair. They are

researching and documenting Lucan, to keep for

future generations. They are an amazing Lucan

group. Thanks again Helen. You inspired another

generation in their interest in History this week.

Adamstown Community College Hospice Fund Raising: Adamstown Community College staff held their annual coffee morning in

aid of hospice last week. The event always sees a

great effort by staff who bring in baked goods and

make a donation. This year €243 was raised.

The students also got involved in the fund raising

with our annual ‘pink’ non uniform day. Students

donated €2 to wear their own clothes with the

theme of something pink. The students made a

great effort to wear pink and had lots of fun while

raising money for a very worthy cause.

Bake Sale: The students involved in the South African township held a bake sale to help with

their fundraising. Students baked lots of treats

which the rest of the students could purchase. It

was a great success and raised €300. This money

will go towards helping develop the township in

South Africa. The eight TY students involved in

the project will visit South Africa in April.

Cara Aires: Congratulations to the Cara Aires

who have been awarded their 5th consecutive

award for being an Ambassador School for the

Cycle Against Suicide. They attended the

National Conference for the Cycle Against

Suicide in Dublin Castle on Wednesday, September 25th. The students heard inspirational

stories of hope from several guest speakers as

well as worked on different action plans to help

promote positive mental health in the school

community. Well done to all involved.

St Joseph’s College ‘BIN IT!’ Roadshow: Our first years really

enjoyed a ‘BIN IT!’ award winning educational

roadshow on Wednesday. The BIN IT!

Programme tackles the impact of littering,

particularly chewing gum litter, in schools. The

presenters were excellent! - Very funny and the

students really enjoyed it and learned a lot too!

Congratulations to Ms Dunne and the four 5th year

students and two 4th year students who

participated in the BOI National Enterprise

Lucan. Quite a number of local representatives

who attended were very impressed by the OSOS

work and how well the students came across. Cont’d over…..

great work in their different roles on our school’s

Student Council.

Arts Week: This week, our Student Council

celebrated Arts Week. The theme of the week was

‘Freedom’. A number of activities were organised

by the Student Council, including a lunchtime

Drama Class with the fabulous Ms. Collender, a

library mural on ‘What Freedom means to me’

and an Arts Week student competition.

Coláiste Phádraig CBS Table Quiz: A reminder that the Coláiste Phádraig Parents Association are holding a

fundraising Table Quiz in Kenny’s, Lucan on

Friday 18th October starting at 8pm. A team of 4

costs 40e and all funds raised will go towards the

cost of installing a library and a 2nd Classroom of

the Future in the school.

TY: Our TY students visited Redhills Adventure

in Kildare recently for an enjoyable day of fun

and team-building activities. 1st up the students

for Archery Tag, where they were equipped with

28pound bow and arrows (with specifically designed hard foam arrows), before attempting to

outscore their targets in the opposing team by

eliminating opposing players while dodging

incessant flying arrows! Things certainly got

competitive but it was all harmless and safe fun

designed to build team spirit and co-operation.

The students also undertook the Archery Assault

Course, a challenging obstacle course where they

had to brave the cargo net, endure monkey bars,

balance beams, navigate minefields and meander

the laser beams in order to complete the course

and get back safely! The students finished up with

an entertaining game of Human Foosball (life-size

table foosball) and even though everyone looked

slightly ridiculous, it was all energetic and

hilarious fun for all! It’s definitely a game that builds team bonding as it involves a lot of

communication and working with your team

mates. The students had a slightly more sedate

day trip to Dublin Zoo last week but no less

enjoyable as they were transported back to their

childhood by their youthful giddiness and

excitement at the sight of so many exotic animals

at one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions.

The students are also very active at present

creating, organising and running table quizzes for

the Junior classes in the school. TY Rice ran the

2nd yr quiz on Tuesday and teachers were very

impressed with how efficient and well run it was.

The questions were well thought out too, topical,

challenging and educational so well done to the

students on their initiative and hard work. TY Edmund will run their quiz for 1st yrs next

Monday while TY Ignatius will hold the 3rd yr

quiz next Friday. The winning table in each year

group wins 20e and all funds raised go towards

the cost of running the popular Talent Show

which will be held in the school on Friday 25th

October.

Professor Brian Cox at the RDS last Wednesday,

25th September. This was part of the award winning show “Exploring the Universe” and it

truly was a once in a life-time experience for

those in attendance. Prof. Cox addressed the

students at the 45th edition of the European

Conference and Exhibition on Optical

Communication (ECOC), the world’s foremost

event on the transmission of information using

light, with the aim of bringing a new generation

of talent into the ever burgeoning field of physics

and engineering. Prof. Cox has already inspired

countless young people to consider STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths)

careers and he has helped bring science to

mainstream audiences all over the world in recent

years. The students were taken aback by the stat

that the equivalent amount of optical

communication required for a single tweet today

would have cost approximately 40,000e just 30

years ago. They also learned that the technology

intensive optical communication equipment

market is expected to reach 30billion euro by

2024 and that this dynamic and exciting sector

needs curious and ambitious graduates in the STEM subjects if Ireland is to position itself as a

leader in this field. Perhaps some of our own

students will see this event as a seminal moment

in their lives when they realised that they wanted

to be scientists. We commend our students on

their genuine interest and co-operation throughout

the day.

Esker Cemetery: At this month’s Local Area I

asked for an update on Esker Cemetery and plans

for maintenance including painting of gates and a

general update on Council plans for the cemetery

and I was told that the 2019 Public Realm

Improvement Works Programme has made

provision for an automated car park vehicle gate and boundary treatment. Works are currently

underway with the automated vehicle gate which

will be installed between the cemetery and the car

park. The cemetery gates on the east side of the

Lucan Newlands Road need to be replaced and

fabrication of the gates will commence later this

year.

If you have any comments or questions on this

issue or if you want to raise any other issue with

me please feel free to contact me any time.

Transport Users We have major concerns with the proposed Bus

Connects projects. It will have very little benefit

for the whole Lucan Corridor, the massive cost of

two thousand million euro and the full project

may take up to ten years to complete. Bus is great

but due to the narrow morning peak travel time of

less than three hours bus won't be able to cater for

users from the massive housing developments

around Dublin. Dublin city won't have space to

cater for all the additional buses that would be

needed, Bus needs to be complimented by rail in the form of Luas (to Lucan) and Metro Dart to

cater for these additional numbers. If we get the

city centre right there is very little need for costly Bus Connects. Our fear is Bus Connects could

delay Lucan getting Luas by up to twenty years.

Our campaign is continuing to get the city centre

right that will benefit all areas with a transport

meeting in Wynn's hotel on Sat 12th of Oct. Drop

in any time if you are passing between 10 AM

and 1 PM and show your support.

A good day for our adult CAMOGIE on Sunday

last and a good finish to the weekend,

unfortunately the day previous there was disappointment as the Senior footballers crashed

out of Championship, a somewhat disappointing

bookmark on what has been a solid year, and they

remain with an outside chance of a AFL1 semi-

final spot. Better news on the Sunday as first

Senior 1 Camogie beat Skerries and now face

NaFianna. THIS Sunday 6th October at 10am at

home, with the winner securing the last semi-final

spot, massive support required, as mentioned all 4

adult Camogie teams recorded wins on Sunday

last, and now the Jnr 4 ladies face a top of the table on Sunday as well against St. Peregrines,

already through to a semi-final, but will be

looking to maintain that momentum.

Our Minor B hurlers earned a dramatic draw in

the last group game vs Cuala 3.08 to 1.14, which earned them top spot in the group and a Qtr Final

spot. Jnr A footballers drew with St. Vincent’s

which was enough to secure a Qtr Final spot, also

Jnr Bs secured a Qtr Final spot.

THIS coming Sunday 6th October our Minor A

footballers face a tough Ballymun side which

again is a winner advances from the

Championship group, we hope to have big

support again, 11am at home. Minor Bs play St

Peregrines and looks likely a win will ensure they

qualify from the group, 11am away.

On Saturday afternoon, 2:30pm we have

the Junior B hurlers in action in a County

Final, the team have been doing so well this

year, it would be great to see a big crowd in

O’Toole Park to cheer them on.

We had a smashing SUMMER IN DUBLIN, the

BAGATELLE GIG was a massive success, a big

thanks to all who supported it and well done to the organising committee and all those who

helped sell tickets.
