Dear Christian Friends:

Prayers are "being answered! In our last newsletter we wrote,"Help VJanted", and several have written that they have been praying for workers. The first response cajne from our own daughter,Amy, and her husband David King. As quickly as they were financially able they moved back to Hawaii at their own expense/ arriving April 20. David is looking for a job, but he has been sobusy here for such long hours that he has been unable to spendmuch time at it. Jobs are hard to find. Amy is teaching everyday in the pre-schooi and helping with the bookkeeping and letterwriting. They live in the little house behind the parsonage.

We will have interns helping at various times through the summer:in May and June, a young couple, Billy and Pam Bonner from Dallas

Christian College,in June and July, Lori Pinney from Dallas Christian Collegein July and August, Georgia Curtis and Sandy Robinson from

Kentucky Christian CollegeWe are also in correspondence with a May graduate of Roanoke BibleCollege who is seriously interested in coming to be a full-timeteacher in the pre-school this fall. If she can be here by September then I should be able to be in Anaheim, CA for the Missionary Convention, Sept. 11-1^. I am seeking speaking engagements in the "Western states for Sept. and Oct. Please let me knowimmediately if I can visit your congregation.

Our daughter, Leta, is now in Mexico with SWIM - a six-weeks mission internship and study program under the direction of Dean-Cary, President of Collegio Biblico. Mark came home from San JoseBible College on May 31 and is enrolled at the University of Hawaiifor the fall term.

We had planned to remodel the parsonage this summer because of thetermite damaged floors and partitions. Our plans were abruptlychanged. VJe discovered that our neighbor wanted to get rid of hishouse so he could build a new one. It was only a few feet fromthe property line next to our old storage building and parking lot.One company wanted to move it and asked if they could bring theirtrucks through our parking lot. We talked to the owner about hisplans, and he said he would give us the house if we wanted it plus$500 toward the cost of moving it. We hurriedly made the necessaryarrangement and it was moved in three days - June 2-^. When thecarpenter finished putting posts under the house, he said, "Thereyou have just added $^5»000 to the value of your property." We areinsuring it-for $30,000. We had to borrow $4-000 in order to havethe cash to move it, and it may cost as much as $500 to get theplumbing and electricity redone, but it will certainly be worth it.

-We^iaveDejen in^ipuch with a family from Seattle that wants to stayin Honolulu this v/inter in preparation -for &tarting~a-busin.ess .anda new church on the island of Hawaii. They had asked us to findthem a house to rent for this winter. The house has three "bedrooms, a large carpeted living room, bath withtub and shower, and kitchen with sink and built-ins along one wall. There are drapes at the windows. It is in good repair with very littletermite damage. It shows that it has been carefully maintained.

All the men (Billy, David, Mark, Philip, and I) have spent manyhoursunhooking the plumbing, moving the bathtub from the block addition intothe bathroom, rebuilding a closet, painting, etc. .Je still must cut atrench through our parking lot and dig a 100* ditch^to lay the sewer.••'Je must have a licensed plumber do the actual plumbing. A friend ofthe congregation has agreed to take care of the electrical work. Evenbefore we knew about the house, David had started to clean out the oldstorage building and hauled truck loads to the dump and to the scrapmetal dealer. Then we cut away two-thirds of that old building, helpedit collapse, and sold the rusty metal roof for scrap. The frame was sotermite eaten we just hauled the fragments to the dump. Then we laid acement block foundation for the back of the house. Because it is on ahill the posts on the front are about 9* tall. The girls are givingHenrietta a lot of hours off from teaching, but she is spending most ofthem in the kitchen cooking for ten people.

If you would like to help with these moving expenses, please write yourcheck to Palolo Valley Church of Christ, and mark it for "house moving",It will be tax deductible.

We are grateful for your interest, concern and prayers.

Yours to serve Him,

Charles 0. Luttrell and family: Henrietta, Mark, Philip, Lora

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF CHARLES C. AND HENRIETTA LUTTRET.T.

"E-c?ery person has the right to hear the gospel once, before any one hastl\e right to hear it tv/ice" was the concept which played a major part in

thfi decision of Charles and Henrietta Luttrell to dedicate their lives tomission work while they were students at Ozark Bible College.

In i960 they read an article in Horizons about the need for a preacherin Honolulu, Hawaii to serve a new congregation begun by Owen Still. They wrote to the Stills but arrangements were not worked out then.In 1962 Brother Still suffered a stroke, and remembering the Luttrell^sinterest, Mrs. Still wrote Charles and Henrietta requesting them to cometo serve the Palolo Valley^Church of Christ in Honolulu. In just threemonths their traveling exposes were raised plus sufficient support tomake it possible for them to go.

Since July, I962 Charles has served this congregation as missionary-minister. Through the years i^t has touched the lives of many childrenand young people. In addition to the normal administration v/ork, missionfund raising, and regular ministerial duties, Charles has also served aspre-school director, developery, bus driver, treasurer, maintenance man,and sometimes custodian. Henrietta has been in charge of Children'sChurch, Sunday School, special events, has done most of the secretari.alv/ork and bookkeeping, and teaches daily in the pre-school.

In^l971 the congregation contracted to buy a new site (about 2i- acres)which had been a chicken farm, but located in the city. On it were ahouse and several old buildings. One v/arehouse v/as remodeled for achurch. Charles experience and ingenuity made it possible to accomplishmuch with minimal expense.

In 1974 a pre-school was begun, and the tuition has paid all expenses andhelped the congregation to meet the mortgage payments. The school has.hadas many as eighteen st.--udents at one time. As it was hoped, the school hasmade it possible to contact a number of families. All the children v/hoattended the I977 Vacation Bible School were originally contacted throughthe school. The new children in VB3 began attending Sunday School and theirparents are showing some interest. A record number of parents attendedthe VBS open house. The first director of the pre-school received herChristian upbringing in the Palolo Valley congregation and is now with herhusband where he is taking graduate work at Lincoln Christian Seminary. They plan to return to the Islands to work for the Lord there.

Charles was born April 30, I9I8 in Kokomo, Indiana. He was educated in thepublic school there. He was immersed at age I7, but did not hear the simpleNew Testament message of Christianity until ten years later. When he did,he was convinced that this was the answer to religious division.

Henrietta Storms was also born in Kokomo, Indiana, July I9, I923. Sheregularly attended a Christian church from infancy. She and Charles weremarried in September, 19^5» and went together to Ozark Bible College thefollowing year. Charles served as the photographer for the: .^^rilrsx yearbook. Student ministries were held at Schell City and Dederich, MO. Heseryed^the Macedonia Christian Church, Kokomo, Indiana, and the LaHarpeChristian Church, Kansas just before going to Hawaii,

The Luttrells have five children. The oldest daughter, Amy, is married, lives on the Church property, does the bookkeeping, and does volunteer

teaching daily in the pre-school. Leta is a missions major in her thirdyear at San Jose Bible College. Mark attended Bible College last year andis nov/ studying at the University of Hawaii. Philip is a high schoolsenior and Lora a seventh grader.

There are no churches of our brotherhood on any of the Hawaiian Islandsexcept Oahu, so the Luttrells are looking forward to having a part inbeginning a congregation oh island of Hawaii in the near future.

MISSION

Dear Friends: t-j' x--»

Sincere greetings and best wishes! Our hearts are filled with joy andpeace as we recapture the mood of that great event that changed historyand changes the hearts of men today - the birth of God's Son. May thatjoy and peace fill your hearts this holiday season and go with youthrough the New Year!

STAFF: Someone has said that the only constant in this life isCHANGE. That seems to be true here, especially in the past few months.Last year, about this time, we reported that a secretary friend, MelbaHobbs, from Minneapolis was coming to live and work with us. When shecame she thought she might only stay for one year and she did. Shehas now returned to her home, but while here she helped in so manyways—typing, teaching, cleaning, ironing, baking, etc. She was theone who saw all the little jobs that had been left undone and did them. She reminded of decisions to be made, plans to be implemented, lettersthat should be written and all those things that improve the qualityof•congregational life. We'll miss her but know that her friends andfamily appreciate her return.

ATTENDANCE: Our attendance has been diminishing, but now is going up.Fourteen new people have begun to attend: the five Nelsons, AngelMcCormic, a classmate of Lora's, two mothers of pre-school childrenand their older children. Our October average was eight more thanSeptember and is the highest for the year so far.

PROSPECTS: It has been almost impossible to get into homes to teachGod's Word, but our contact with the parents of our pre-schoolers isbeginning to open doors. We are now showing the Jule Miller Biblesurvey filmstrips in two homes, and both mothers are concerned aboutpleasing the Lord.

ADDITIONS: Four Nelsons transferred their fellowship from the RivertonChurch in Seattle. One young man, who had grown up in a denominationalchurch, after studying the scriptures came to the understanding thathe needed to do more and was immersed.

ACTIVITIES: Because of limited funds and limited help we have neverbeen able to be away from the work here in Palolo Valley to have afamily vacation except to take furloughs (traveling far and fast is nota vacation). Our pre-school will be closed the week between Christmasand New Years which will give us a break that we can be away. We havetwo acres of land on the Big Island (Hawaii) on which we would like toca:;jp, rest, do a little work, do some sightseeing, and some surveyingon the possibility of beginning a congregation on that island. Ourincome will be the determining factor.

FINANCES: We were so anxious to take advantage of that gift of ahouse just for the cost of moving and refinishing that we borrowed$^4-700 to do it. But people have responded generously and now we oweabout $1^00 on that loan. We can do very little to extend the Kingdomon the other island until that loan is repaid, so we pray that it canbe done quickly. We still'take only a minimum salary ($500 per month)and could certainly use more, but He provides our needs and we trustthat He will continue to do so,_ Our pre-school enrollment is low, sowe are not able to"contribute as much as formerly to church expenses. So we do need your continued support.

FAMILY: We really notice the passing of time as we observe our children.LORA is in the seventh grade and is a little taller than her mother now.She is enjoying band, but her favorite subject is Social Studies becauseof her teacher, Mr. Aimes. He really loves to teach and goes all outfor his students. PHILIP loves his shop work. He made a two-foot modelof Dutch windmill last year, and this year he is working on a twelve-foot model. This will serve as a power supply to generate electricity.MARK is a freshman at the University^this year, but it is obvious thathe misses the companionship and spiritual food that he had last year^at Bible College. LETA is a Junior at San Jose Bible College. She justlearned that she has four impacted wisdom teeth that need surgicalremoval, and she also needs some orthodontal work that will take 2fyears. She wants to get it started as soon as possible. Since shewill have to stay near her Doctor fbr this time, she plans to take part-time work at the college, and get a full-time job to pay for the dentalwork. Then she will graduate in 1979 instead of 1978. Please pray forher that she will trust in the Lord, not be afraid, and have the perseverance to meet her goals. AMY continues to teach in the pre-school.David is working and they hope to move into their own apartment soon.

Yours in His service,

(for the family: Charles, Henrietta, Leta, Mark, Philip, and Lora
