Second Quarter Newsletter 2002Greetings from dry Oahu. When I last wrote we

were having rain and our mountains were green. Now the landscape is brown. We had a few brushfires over the 4th from fireworks but no seriousdamage.

Finally, I am getting down to routine tasks. When I returned on June 19,1 was swamped withunanswered mail, bills, periodicals, etc. My Junenewssheet, "The Encourager" was printed and readyfor me to address and mail. Those are answeredand my July "Encourager" is in the hands of thepublisher. When I checked, I discovered I had notwritten this quarterly letter. Of course, I did reportto a few of my supporters in person.

My daughter's wedding was beautiful. She hadefficiently made elaborate arrangements and theywere carried out perfectly. The weather was ideal,as was the setting in the garden of a lovely Frenchrestaurant.

My granddaughter, Annie King, flew with meand we were met in St. Louis by my sister and herdaughter. They took us to the Kokomo, Indiana areawhere we stayed with friends. I reported to threeof my supporting churches in the area and visitedwith many individuals. It was a glorious time of reconnecting with family and friends from yesteryear. After I had been three Sundays in that area, myniece came and took me back to Missouri, alongwith my brother, Julien Storms.

We visited for a week with my sister, and thenthe three of us went to the Senior Adult Conferenceof Ozark Christian College at the Stonecroft Convention Center near Branson, Missouri. It was a joyfultime ~ the messages were stimulating and thefellowship so refreshing. It was then back to St.Louis and to catch the flight back to California for

Anya's graduation. Now it's back to work for the Lord. Exciting things

are being planned at Waialua. The weekend of July 19we will have a family camp-out at a beach park combined with Vacation Bible School. We will have two VBS

classtimes on Friday ~ morning and afternoon, two onSaturday, and one on Sunday morning. Zola willbe thecook, and I will teach one class. Our preacher, SteveSturm, will have night sessions for the adults. JoyMarshall is directing the VBS. Our new men's organization, the Watchmen, are handling the physical items ~tents, etc. It is a new venture, and we trust that it willbring us all closer to the Lord and each other.

The family that lives next door to the church had atragedy (their youngest boy died suddenly) and Steveand the church family ministered to them. The motherand little son had just begun attending our services. Now they come often and have opened their lanai(patio) to Zola so she can conduct "little church" there. This will free the minister's study to be used for anursery when just a few arrangements are made.

This will help to get us through our child-careproblems right now. But more permanent solutionsmust be found. We have opened a "Waialua ChristianChurch Project" account to raise funds for expansion —building, buying or whatever seems best. Pray for us,and help if you can.

Yours in His service,

the wires through the subdivision next to us. We wondered what to do, where to go. We finally decided topick up the other three children and do some groceryshopping. We stopped in the pre-school parking lotnext to my house so the children could climb the fenceand get in the van. Then we went to a fast food place, played games, read, and finally ordered food. Annieand Kawika went to the market and got the groceries.Amy joined us after her work.

We had heard that one man on our street hadparked his truck across the highway and walked in. Wedecided to try that. When we could see the highway, werealized that the traffic was just inching along for theeight or ten miles to our house. It would take us at leastthree hours to get home, the power was out, we mightnot even be able to walk in. We thought of a friend whomight let the seven of us sleep on her floor. She wouldand we did. I had her spare room.

But David sat in that traffic for two hours, parked, and walked in to get some needed things for Tuesdayand to put away the cookies Anita had just baked. Wewere grateful for Joy's hospitality. We got to bed late, slept fitfully, were up early to get to school and work. They had worked all night and the poles were up, electricity restored, and traffic was flowing freely. Howblessed we are to have services in our communities tocare for emergencies. How blessed we are to have aGod who cares for all our spiritual needs, too.

May the Lord shower you with His mercy andgrace! Aloha,

HCM Newsletter 3rd Quarter 2002Greetings from Waianae! "I do not cease to

give thanksfor you, remembering you in my prayers. " I am so grateful for your continued prayersand support. Not only for me but for the churchhere. I have received two generous checks for theWaialua Project fund, so it is growing. The needcontinues - space for the nursery and a classroom.

Our preacher, Steve Sturm, has just finished astudy on the Holy Spirit in Bible Class time and now ispreaching through Titus. He will be gone part of October so our deacon will be teaching the class then. Thismonth I am leading a discussion group for the ladieson James, using the questions we developed and usedat the Palolo Church years ago.

Our plans for the VBS/Family Camp became areality July 19-21 at a lovely beach park just a fewmiles from the church. The theme "Faith Mountain"was beautifully illustrated by the mountains on threesides of the camp site, with the ocean on the other. Wewere all challenged to follow the examples of the heroes mentioned inHebrews 11. The husband of one ofour newer members (but who does not attend) helpedwith cooking at the camp. He has volunteered to dothe cooking the next time and is anxious to do so.

Zola and I recently attended the planning meeting for our all-state women's event. The Fall activitywill be a tea at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 6.1 am theregistrar. Cha Thompson will be the speaker and willtalk about "Missions we can all be involved in." She iswell known in entertainment circles and many community organizations. She and her husband formedSouth Sea Christian Ministries which serves especiallyin Samoa. Our Waialua ladies will meet Sept. 29 to besure we are ready to do our part.

We have had an exciting week. We were takingMoani to the dentist on Monday and were met by apoliceman directing traffic around poles and wires atthe end of our street. Three termite-eaten poles hadbroken in the wind. By the time we returned, trucksblocked our street, and all cars were diverted around

MAKAHIKl HOU! I like to use these

Hawaiian words to wish you a MerryChristmas and a Happy New Year. Itreminds me that this is a unique state -the only American (U.S.A.) one thatever had an earthly king. Now we prayand work that more of its citizens will

bow their knee to the heavenly King.

We rejoice that we now have acanopy on our parking lot where Zolahas her Primary Class and LittleChurch. I have begun taking her placeon first Sundays so Zola can hear thesermon. Now Annie King takes care ofthe little ones in the enclosed study/kitchen. Especially the parents aregrateful that they can worship withoutdistraction. Annie is happy when someof the newer youngsters will stay withher.

The canopy helps, but we do needmore space, so we continue to solicitfunds for the Waialua Christian Church

Project Fund. It was showery, so we celebrated the November-December birth

days with the potluck spread in theauditorium. We hold our breath that

there will be no serious spills on ourupholstered pews. That day we"appreciated" our minister, StevenSturm, too. It was a happy/sad day. Welearned that Steve's father had suffered

a massive stroke. In addition he has

many other serious health problems. Please pray for Wally Sturm. We alsolearned that Leo and Mildred Douglasswill be moving to Nebraska in January. They been faithful servants of the Lordhere in several churches since the early60's.

Steve has been preaching from thebook of Titus. He distributes his outline

with "fill-the-blank" spaces. I have beentaking mine to the checker at the supermarket who lives in Waialua. She has

been worldng on Sundays, but says sheand her teen-age daughter go over theoutlines.

After the successful women's tea on

October 6, a group of the ladies met forevaluation and to begin planning forour spring conference. Nine ladies fromfour of our churches were there - all but

two of them were over 50. Mary Smithand I agreed to chair the conference ifwe can get two of the younger women toserve with us and be mentored in those

positions. Tentative plans call for us tohave it March 29, 2003 using the theme"Victory in Jesus."

Annual update on my children:AMY is now a legal assistant for a prominent lawyer. His office is downtown, sobecause of heavy traffic she is goneabout 12 hours each day. DAVID workssporadically in construction, but his big
