Dear Fellow Workers:

All praise to the Lord of the harvesti We continue to sow, water, and He gives theincrease in His time. You, who are farmers, may be in the harvest season now, butin the Church we must wait on Him. We pray that as His word is planted around theworld that it will bear fruit for Him.

The children really see-.ied to enjoy our Film Fun Day in August and there were severalnew children present. Lora and Penny used puppets to tell tiiem about VBS. Some ofthe new ones wanted to come to VBS but did not make it. Some lived too far away.We had as high as 41 present one morning at VBS - including our 17 regular pre-schoolers,I taught the biggest class (excluding the pre-schoolers) - the Intermediates, made upof the Luttrell and Nelson children and their friends. Shirley began attending ourservices with Lora about two vears ago,4COTies regularly on Sunday mornings and attended VBS every day. She says she is not ready to make»-decision about becoming aChristian.

A young woman of Chinese descent phoned me one Saturday night about a month ago. Wetalked about two hours. Her mother is a devout Buddhist so she knew nothing aboutthe Bible or Christianity. Her boy friend is a Seventh-Day Adventist. She was havingproblems and wanted to know about the Bible and how Cod could help her. She has beenin the morning service almost every Sunday since then, catching the city bus fromacross town. I have spent hours talking to her, but she wants to be sure she ismi-king a genuine commitment of her life before she is baptized. We rarely have drop-in visitors or make unintroduced friends, so we are surprised at her response. Shefound that our church ad included my name so she phoned us - she did not want tojust call a number.

We have two young women who have attended our services for years but their parentsrefuse to allow them to be immersed. They are -Jennifer and Joyce. Kwok is the husband of our newest Christian. She is ha ving "growing pains" and if her husbandwas renewed in his commitment to the Lord, it \vould be such a help to her. Will youpray for these by name: Shirley, Shelley, Jennifer, .Joyce, and Kwok'that thosethings will be removed that are keeping them from obeying Jesus?

One of our problems is the lack of workers to do all the things that need to be done(isn**t this true everywhere?). For years I have driven the van to pick up childrenfor the services. At our last business meeting three of the young men in the churchvolunteered to do the driving. Tliey also suggested that all the men and boys gettogether Saturday_ to level the are_a and set the forms to pour the driveway from J;heupper to the lower parking lot. Dave Nelson had scooped out the bulk of it with hisloader several weeks ago and It must be finished before the winter rains' begin. Daveis teaching a series of lessons on "Heart (spiritual) Diseases" on Sunday nights andPaul Hill has been leading the mid-week Bible study. We're grateful for their cooperation.

You may know that we have had a leaky roof in the classroom area for years andnaturally it is getting worse. Replacing the metal would not solve the problem because the rafters are too termite damaged. We bought some old but unused trusses ata good price ($200 for 27) that have some dry-rotted boards which will have to bereplaced. I've been repairing them and creosoting them. Then we'll set some workdays when the men and boys can get together to take off the old roof and put on thenew one.

We have had a real turn-over of pupils in the pre-school since school started.Three went to Kindergarten, one moved away, one was unhappy so his mother sendshim to a sitter each morning until his father can care for him (his mother and

brother came to church for a couple of weeks just after VBS so we were sorry tolose him). Several new pupils enrolled so we have 17 again. The mother of twogirls who were active members for years volunteered to help each morning in ourpre-school to help her understand English better. She has lived in the U.S. foryears, but at home she listens to Japanese radio and TV and speaks Japanese to herfamily. She wants to improve her English to get a job. Her daughter thinks shewill leam about Jesus from the simple Bible stories. Pray that it works. Wedon't know how long she will help us since she is looking for work. One of ourteacher s is pregnant and can only supervise the children two hours a day whilethe children are asleep. I supervise them from 6:30-8 every morning, but SueNelson and Henrietta share the rest of the day. With more students^the bookkeepingand record keeping involves Henrietta for more hours, so she really needs to berelieved of so many teaching hours.

We are eagerly looking forward to having Dennis Oertel and DeAnn Morton join us assoon as possible. They plan to be married October 20. They are now contactingchurches and trying to raise support to join us in the work here, Dennis has hadconstruction experience so he will be a big help in both the physical and spiritualwork. If he were only here now, we might be able to get the driveway and rooffinished before winter, DeAnn is needed in the pre-school, too, and on the SundaySchool staff. Our Intermediate and high school girls now teach the pre-schoolchildren on Sunday when they really want and need to be in their own classes, Pauland Kathy Hill sponsor the youth, and they are well-liked, but they are newChristians themselves and need to be relieved sometimes &o they can study and leam.

In our last newsletter we asked those who want to continue receiving our newsletterto return their name and address otftheir newsletter. We are repeating therequest. After the first of the year, if we have not received your name, we willdrop it from our mailing list. Just mail the end of the letter with your name on itto us at 2165 Tenth Ave., Honolulu, HI 96816. We have already received many, andwere pleasantly surprised to get notes of encouragement and some checks along withthem.

May the Lord give you fruit for your labor for Him,

Your CO-laborer for Christ,

DECEMBER, 1979

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

All praise to Him who planned our salvation before the world beganl As I write, thesun is shining, the trees are swaying in the light breeze, the arms of our win(toillare beginning to turn, faster and faster - then they stop. It reminds me again thatwhen we are as responsive to the leading of the Lord as those sails are to the wind, then He can use our lives to bring glory to Him as Jesus did through His incarnation, life, and death. As you worship Him, may He give you peace and joy in this holidayseason and throughout the New Year.

In our last newsletter we asked you to pray for some individuals, Shirley, Joyce, and Jennifer are still attending the services regularly. May the Lord keep theirhearts tender towards Him. Shelley comes, listens, asks questions but is putting offmaking a decision. Kwok, the husband of our young Christian - Cynthia, has been inthe morning service three Sundays out of four, Cynthia is working now and Kwok bringstheir daughter to pre-school each morning. He is a quiet, reserved person so we arehappy to have this opportunity to visit with him in an informal way. Please keeppraying.

We were thrilled to have a young adult man volunteer to be in charge of our Christmasplay this year. When he could not find the script he wanted, he wrote one. The youngpeople met with him last week to assign the parts. We've asked you to pray for thisperson often, so we feel that prayers are being answered as he assumes this responsibility.

The Japanese lady who volunteered to help in our pre-school is no longer helping.Kathy sits with the children while they are napping, but soon will not be able to dothat much. So, I open the school at 6:30 and stay until 8 when Henrietta or Suerelieves me. They each work about five hours per day in the pre-school and try to takecare of their families and do their other work around that schedule. Sue is takingnine credit hours of work in Early Childhood Education at a community college andHenrietta is taking three. So they are really anxious to have DeAnn Oertel come assoon as possible to help them. The pre-school takes many hours of service, but it isproviding a worthwhile service to the parents, the children, and the church as itfurnishes contacts and funds.

Dennis Oertel and DeAnn Morton were married October 20, Now they are continuing towork hard to raise their support to join us in the work here. We pray that this isthe couple that the Lord is preparing to use in a mighty way here, and that they willbe working here for many years, so we hope that you get to meet them. If you caninvite them to your church or mission group to hear him speak or show slides, pleasewrite to him at 846 2nd Bomar Street, Greenwood, IN 46142. Please pray that the Lord'speople will provide the funds so that they can-come quickly. We need their youthfulstrength and enthusiasm.

We rejoicelWe are making some progress in the physical things that need to be done. Ontwo weekends, the Luttrell and Nelson boys worked on digging out the driveway slope toprepare it for forms. I spent several odd hours finishing the digging and getting theforms ready. One morning our son-in-law had only an early college class. Then he cameover and suggested that we order the ready-mixed cement for the afternoon. All theother men were busy, but he thought the two of us could handle it. He is a hard worker,With the help of two men on the truck we finished Th yards of concrete, shoveling aboutone-half of it higher on theslope that their chute would reach. We were exhausted butrelieved to have it in. Since the drainage canal for this part of the mountain emptiesacross that section of our driveway, it was vital that we get it in before the heavywinter rains. The Nelsons have a bare bank of earth about twelve feet high (that'spart of the church land we are selling them) behind their house, so we're hoping therains hold off for a while. We want to get the roof trusses up and the new roof onover the pre-school area of the church building, too. I have seven trusses finishedbut still need to do some work on the other twenty.

Christmas is family time, so we want to include news of our family and hope you willsend us news of yours. The doctor at my last physical said I was in excellent healthexcept for my allergies, but I'm not able to get as much done as I used to. Iguess that it is to be expected when you get past 60 years old. In the past fewmonths I've been walking two miles every day. It makes me breathe hard and helpsclear my lungs. I seem to have more energy, but find it mighty easy to nap when Isit down to read or study, I'm keeping busy with the pre-school, property upkeepand development, and ministerial duties. Henrietta is in good health and keeps busyin the pre-school, in college, in the office, and in the home. Amy is working towardher childhood ambition - to become a Doctor, and is in her second year of college, asis her husband, David King. Leta graduated from San Jose Bible College in May andstayed there to work as a nurses aide in a convalescent hospital. She is planning tomarry David Leggitt of San Jose on March 8. He is a fine, Christian young man. Theyboth seem very happy and eagerly await the big day, Mark is a Junior at the UH andworks in the circulation department of a weekly newspaper as an area adviser. Philipis in his last, year at the community college in his preparation to be a carpenterapprentice, Lora is a ninth grader at lolani School, a private school established bymissionaries in 1862. She is working hard and her grades are improving. She reallylikes it. She made TV news since this is the first year that girls have been allowedin the student body. There are 43 girls and about 150 boys in the freshman class.

May the Lord give to you and yours happiness and peace in this Christmas season, andstrength and direction for the New Yeari

Your brother in Christ,

For the family: Charles, Henrietta, Mark, Philip, and Lora
