AUGUST, 1986

Dear Friends,

Greetings in the name of the Lord who cares for and comforts Kis own!How gracious He is, and His people have been so comforting and encouraging to me.

I'm sure you were shocked by Charles' sudden death on June 11, as wewere. On the previous Sunday he had taught his class and preached. Onthat day he had a friend pour a short section of a foundation for him. That evening he felt so well he asked for some popcorn—he hadn't feltlike eating any for weeks. While he ate it and watched TV in the livingroom, I read in the kitchen. I investigated a noise and found himsprawled on the floor. Our next-door neighbor is a para-medic and hecame in a minute and began OPR. The ambulance rushed him to the hospital, but the emergency procedures were unsuccessful. We had agreed tohave the internment on the mainland because all the children live there.A memorial service was held at the Palolo Valley Church in Honoluluwhere he had served for 21 years, then I caught a plane immediately forIndiana. The funeral was at Frankfort and it was comforting to haveall five of our children there.

Since I needed to be at Leta's to care for her children during her operation on August, I stayed on the mainland. I visited with Amy'sfamily in Indianapolis until after the Conventions there; spent a restful 10 days with my sister in St. Charles,MO; and on July 25 arrived atLeta's in Redway, CA. They live in a beautiful grove of giant redwoods.I had about 12 days to learn where Leta keeps things, her ways with herchildren and husband, favorite foods, etc. On August 6 we all took a5-hour drive (4 hours to the hospital in San Francisco) so that thegirls could stay with Dave's folks in San Jose while Dave and I were

at the hospital during her surgery. Leta had a degenerative bonecondition that allowed her spine to curve almost 90 in the upper shoulder area--the normal curve is 25 to 50 . After the 7-hour surgery, theDoctor reported that he was only able to get 15° of correction. She wasin intensive care for 5 days because of fluid in the lungs—one of themhad been collapsed. Then an x-ray showed that there was 31° of correction. The Doctor was surprised but Leta told him that many people werepraying for her. They hope to get more correction at the second surgeryon August 22, when in addition to the spinal fusion they will insertsteel compression rods.

Lora will finish her work here on August 15» and then will return toOCC for her 4th year. She hopes to be able to graduate in the spring,so that she can return to Hawaii and join me in the work there. She ispreparing a slide program and will be able to represent Hawaii CallsMission on the week-ends and after school is out. If you can use herservices in any way, please write to her: Lora Luttrell, Ozark Christian College, G-104,1H1 North Main, Joplin, MO 64801.

The date of my return to the islands depends on Leta*s recuperation. We had originally planned to be here until the end of October, but itmay be longer. Leta will be unable to lift anything and will be wearing a brace. I trust that I will be able to go back before the end ofthe year.

News from the Kaili Christian Church indicates progress there. Thepreacher's oldest son and his family have moved back into the area, andwill be a help and encouragement to his father. Another couple havebegxin to attend the services. They were recently married. Both ofthem had attended the church in former years.

Many gifts, cards, and letters have been received, suid I am gratefulfor each one. I trust that those who have been supporting us, willcontinue to support my teaching so that the children and young peoplemay learn about Jesus. Correspondence may be sent to me in care ofB. Leggitt, P. 0. Box 1178, Redway CA 9556O until further notice..

Yours in His service.

Henrietta Luttrell

Dear Brethren,

Greetings in the name of the Babe of Bethlehem who through His gracenow enables us to be one family in Him.

Plans meshed perfectly and I was able to return to Hawaii on October 30.While the house was dusty, most things were in good shape even afterbeing unused for almost five months.

The leaders at both the Waipahu church and at Maili were glad to haveme resume teaching the children. At Waipahu just the Sunday before theyhad prayed for more teachers and they said I was the answer to theirprayers. At Maili I have begun again my after-school Bible Club andhad almost twice as many children present the first time as at any onesession before I left. There were also two ladies present. A mother, who lived next door to the Maili building for years, was discussingwith her husband recently their children's behavior. They decidedthat they needed to be in church and she planned to go with them thenext Sunday. That week her husband had a heart attack and died onthe mower beside the highway. The mother and her two teen-agers havebeen in every service since then. . My son-in-law, David, began aSunday School class for those two young people and they were joinedby three others from the Bible Club last Sunday. Leta has been teaching a young children's class and there were two new ones from theBible Club.

David has begun working as a service writer for a Mercedes-Benz cardealer in Honolulu. Leta is continuing to gain strength and can beup in her brace for longer periods of time. The heat bothers her themost. She can now help with the cooking and washing dishes, etc., andis developing ways to do many things without bending. She has a toolwhich she uses to pick up small items—I've threatened to get her a jobas thrash-lady along the highway, but she doesn't think that is funny. The children are adjusting nicely, enjoy the beach and playing in theirown room.

Since Christmas is a "family" holiday, I will enjoy having beta's familyhere. It will be the first time in years that little children have beenaround at present-opening time. As usual this month, I want to letyou know what my children are doing, and hope to hear about yours.AMY'S family live in in Indianapolis. She has four daughters and ishome-schooling the older ones. Her husband works for a contractorwho specializes in remodeling. He is the one who plans to come andwork on my houses next year—probably in February and March. A few giftshave already been received to help with their transportation. If youwant to contribute, send it to Hawaii Calls Mission and mark it "For theKings." MARK is still an electronic test engineer for Lockheed and living in his condominium in Fremont, CA. While the space telescope is on"hold" because of the shuttle accident, he is working on another project.PHILIP has finished the remodeling on the outside of his house, and willcomplete the last room on the inside this winter. He and his wife arestill praying and seeking an infant to adopt. If YOU know of an
