Dr. Gerald Edelman was born in Queens, NY. (New York City

has been home to over 127 Nobel Laureates.) Dr. Edelman discovered that the human brain cells have a course of development similar to that of the immune system. At birth, the immune system and the brain have a lot more cells than those which survive until growth and development. Dr. Edelman’s interest in antibodies and consciousness is notable. Like most great men, he was a man of great discipline. Dr. Edelman was trim and sharp right up to his death, just shy of his 85 birthday. For us it came too soon.

In the previous articles we addressed the four fundamental components of healthy living. The mind is an integral part of this

theory. For the purpose of this article the brain is the word used for the anatomic structures comprising the contents of the skull. The mind refers to the functions of the brain based on volition and genetic predisposition. The human brain processes most information on a subconscious level. We get to

teenager from Orleans. She believed that she was hearing voices from Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel and Saint Catherine. So convincing were her apparitions that King Charles VII allowed her to command an army. She led the French troops to victory in battle over English, who had menaced northern France for a century. Today it is thought that she might have suffered temporal lobe epilepsy. According to Dr. V. S Ramachandaran hyper religiosity is seen in 30-40 percent of temporal lobe epilepsy patients. Dr. Norman Geschwind of the Boston VA hospital noted this back in 1975.

Neuroscientist Dr. David Eagleman said, “Some fraction of history’s prophets, martyrs and leaders seemed to have temporal lobe epilepsy”.

Dr. Mario Beauregard of the University of Montreal did an experiment on a group of Carmelite nuns who agreed to undergo MRI studies of their brains. The results showed the following parts of brain when the nuns underwent spiritual experiences.

In the last decade was have seen the development of the DTI (diffusion tensor imaging) type of MRI image water flows within the brain that show how parts of the brain are connected. These exciting advances have allowed us to learn about the structure and functions of the brain on levels not possible before. The mysteries of the brain continue to unfold at a painfully slow pace. The help to the mentally challenged cannot come soon enough.

patterns profoundly affect the mind. Positive thinking is more than positive. The world does not need to be reminded of the destruction caused by negative thinkers.

Positive mental nutrition has a great bearing on the chemical environment of the brain. Exercise, spicy food, music, socializing, chocolate, humor and sexual fulfilment release chemicals in the brain called Endorphins. These

However, Pershing never wore his gold stars out of respect for General Washington, who did not have four gold stars.
