The following is a story of rivalry between two Grandmaster surgeons. These masters of the operating theater changed the course of the healing arts and sciences. Countless lives continue to be saved and enhanced owing their lifetimes of dedication and devotion to duty. Michael DeBakey

(Anglicized from DeBahgi) was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana in 1908 to Lebanese parents. Dr. DeBakey received his MD degree from Tulane University. Hence, an artificial pumping mechanism for circulating the blood in and out of the body is needed to keep the patient alive. His experience in WWII had a deep impact on him and his career. Dr.

patients. His surgical skills were considered by some as superior to those of his boss, DeBakey. Dr. DeBakey planned to perform the first total artificial heart transplant in April 1969. The surgery was delayed due to Dr. DeBakey having scheduled a teaching engagement elsewhere. While DeBakey was gone what do you think Cooley did? He called the patient in and he performed the first total artificial heart implant! DeBakey was understandably furious and the ensuing feud lasted for over four decades. Cooley moved across the street to St. Luke’s Hospital where he became the head of cardiac surgery.

Both great doctors continued producing amazing results in this highly competitive environment. In 2008 DeBakey was awarded

an irony. Denton Cooley MD was born in Houston, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. Cooley completed his medical degree from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. His skills as a doctor earned him early recognition by his teachers. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1946 -1948. His excellent academic background and experience in the army set him on a path of glory. Dr. Cooley became an associate professor of surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and started working with Dr. Debakey in the 1950s. These two doctors on one faculty were like two swords in one scabbard.

Like DeBakey, Cooley also pioneered procedures of bloodless open heart surgery on

DeBakey helped develop the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) units. It was his idea to move surgeons closer to the fighting lines. This helped save a great number of lives in the Korean War and all wars subsequently.

Dr. DeBakey was an advisor on public health policy in the Truman and Johnson administrations. Dr. DeBakey pioneered Dacron grafts and was the first to perform patch graft angioplasty and coronary bypass procedures. DeBakey joined the faculty Baylor College of Medicine in 1948. Dr. DeBakey and his team literally put Baylor on the map of the world. Heads of state, including Russian President Boris Yeltsin and world celebrities flew to Houston to be treated by Dr. Debakey. Dr. DeBakey is the oldest patient to undergo The DeBakey Procedure, which he developed! He refused to allow his team to operate on himself. After he lost consciousness, the Ethics Committee at Baylor approved the procedure. What

the Congressional Gold Medal. President George Bush and Speaker Nancy Pelosi gave out the award. Dr. DeBakey invited Dr. Cooley to the ceremony and presented to him a leatherbound copy of the first article they had written together.

Drs. Debakey and Cooley were always thin, watchful of what and how much they ate on top of being physically active. Their long and successful lives bear testimony to leading by example.

At some point in our history, a man and a wolf became friends. As this friendship grew, man’s canine friend began guarding his dwellings and flocks. Mankind began to sleep well protected. Good sleep builds civilizations.

Mankind benefitted tremendously from the wolf’s herding instinct.

GeOrGe PattOn:Patton was one of the best battlefield commanders in history. During WWII, the German High Command respected and feared him more than any other Allied General. Did you know that Patton represented the U.S. in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics? He was on the American show jumping team but his horse could not compete due to fitness issues. However, Patton did take part in the pentathlon and did very well. He stood 5th or 6th, only because he chose to use a caliber .38 handgun instead of the usual

What once the wolves hunted, their descendant dogs guarded. Once animals of sustenance could be domesticated with the hellp of dogs humanity was able to settle down. Farming evolved after that and led to the growth of poulation centres. The Civilization evolved owing to the collective efforts of settled communities. The early city states evolved from farming and trading markets. Dogs were essential to survival for the early humans.

So much is owed to this one animal species’ love for us. The Nile, Euphrates, Indus and Yangtze valley civilizations were all able to herd animals successfully with the aid of dogs. Our constant and most loyal companions still serve us with love. “After dog came the horse, for the progress and pleasure of mankind”.

caliber .22 bore. Guess what? One of the rounds went through a previous hole and the judges counted it as a miss. Patton was a superb swordsman and the first U.S. Army officer to be designated “Master of the Sword”, He was also a highly rated polo player who was admired and dreaded on the polo field.

In the days just before and after VE Day he was instrumental with the rescue and protection of the famous Lipizzaner horses of the Spanish Riding School of Austria. Descendants of these gorgeous horses are in the U.S. today. Patton loved horses all his life.

Denton Cooley and I have shared the honor of treating Mr. Hisham Tabari. Mr. Tabari left his father’s rich dominion in the British Manda-tory Protectorate of Palestine during the upheaval of 1948. An heir left his land bereft of all wealth and status. He landed in the USA at the age of sixteen. He worked his way through college and never gave up. Today, Mr. Tabari is a Captain of commerce and industry as are his brothers. He is a devoted family man. His wonderful capaci-ty, devotion to duty and discipline generate a force which conquers even seemingly insurmountable odds.
