From machine tools tothree-wheeled vehicles, all the way through tothe sleek, slick — and

wildly popular — cars that it pro-duces today, there is no questionthat Mazda has long been an inno-vative and adventurous automo-bile manufacturer.

Indeed, this Japanese automak-er has proved its mettle in moreways than one, and enjoys a repu-tation for manufacturing excitingcars for the general public thesedays.

Mazda’s first four-wheeled carwas produced in 1960. The R360took off like wildfire, and set thestage for the brand’s later popular-ity in North America. The follow-ing decade marked the beginningof Mazda’s presence in the UnitedStates; the RX-2 was its first

American offering and it faredvery well. Wankel engines andother innovative perks enhancedthe brand’s reputation consider-ably throughout the 1970s.

Following a series of financialtroubles, Ford purchased a 25 per-cent stake in Mazda in 1979.Since then, the two have beenlinked and the merger has been afruitful one. With it, the Mazdabrand was reborn and enjoyed amajor boost throughout the 1980s.

In 1990, the Mazda’s MX-5Miata — with its exceptional han-dling and overall aesthetic appeal— made a huge splash. Today, theMiata is the best-selling roadsterin the world. Mazda also won theLe Mans race with its 787Bmodel, cementing its reputationfor producing fast, zippy cars.

Although a relative new-comer to the averageAmerican — after all,Nissan didn’t start using

that name until 1981 — this auto-mobile manufacturer has enjoyeda long history that spans all theway back to 1933.

The company initially restrictedits focus to Japan. After WorldWar II, though, it expanded itsefforts worldwide using theDatsun name.

A 1960s merger with PrinceMotor Company spurred the com-pany to shift its focus to luxuryvehicles. The first car that itdesigned exclusively for the U.S.market, the Datsun 510 sedan, increased its overall popularityconsiderably. During the 1970s,the Datsun 240Z sports carbecame a favorite of car enthusi-

asts around the world. In 1981,though, the Datsun name wasphased out and the Nissan namewas put into exclusive use.

Fun cars like the 300ZX, theSentra and the Maxima helped giveNissan an edge over the competi-tion, especially among sporty luxu-ry vehicles. A slight slump duringthe late 1990s was more than madeup for after 2000, when Nissanunveiled the redesigned Altima andSentra models — along with theTitan and the Armada — winningover new fans once more and prov-ing yet again that it is a true forceto be reckoned with in the world ofslick, sleek cars that everyday peo-ple can enjoy.

No matter what name it has, it’sgood to see Nissan continue itsfocus on affordable luxury andperformance.

Latin for “I Roll,” Volvohas always been associ-ated with diligent crafts-manship and sustain-

ability. If you’re driving a Volvo,it’s difficult not to feel safe.

Severe Swedish weatherprompted the company to engi-neer cars that would remainimpenetrable to the cold. Thisweather restriction inadvertentlystarted a legacy of solid durabilityand design.

Volvo’s recent moves towardusing electric batteries to powercertain models is extremely excit-ing for both the company and thelarger electric battery movement.Although smaller outfits have cre-ated pure electric vehicles, andother companies have launchedsuccessful hybrid lines, no compa-

ny with the stature, class, andrefined engineering sense ofVolvo has seriously pursued creat-ing a mass-market electric vehi-cle.

Unlike other electric vehicles,Volvo aims to preserve its trade-mark sensible yet roomy luxury inan electrically-powered form.

In December of 2009, ZhejiangGeely Holding Group, a Chinesecompany, reached an agreement topurchase Volvo from Ford. Thisexpansion of Volvo into the Asianmarket increases the potentialmajor impact that its fleet of vehi-cles could have on the world atlarge.

It’s safe to say that, no matterwho owns Volvo, this brand willstill leave its drivers with a feelingof safety for a long time to come.
