Best of Me...Amy MaguireBest meal (cooked by you or byanother):Although I do enjoy cooking, myhusband cooks most of our meals. Themeals I enjoy the most are family oneswhere we have a day of ‘togetherness’,a walk, a movie, games and a familymeal. Best outfit or single piece of clothing:I have recently been getting fitter atNautilus Gym, losing a good amountof weight. A few months ago I boughta dress. I love it … and for the firsttime in a long while, feel lovely in it.And wearing skirts. What a joy!Best memory:I have two that I cannot separate.Meeting my husband for the very

first time … and then the day wemet our son. He was five. He camerunning out of his foster-parents’home … and then dashed back in,all shy!! All our lives changedforever that day!!Best way to spend the day:I am very family orientated. I likenothing better than to spend the dayjust walking or ‘chilling’ with my‘men-folk’. A close second, however, would be spent at the SouthernShow, helping to show the cowsowned by Sheila and Steve Gawne.Did I mention, my nickname is‘Moo”?Best advice:To me? ‘Just go with the flow.’ I am

a worrier … but when I just ‘let go’things seem to just happen the waythey should. My piece of advice?Be positive! Negativity breedsnegativity. And, as I say to my pianostudents: ‘If you say “I Can’t”, youwon’t. If you say “I can” you will!’ Best place in the Isle of Man:Well, I love walking I did the SarahKilley Memorial Fire Walk this year –and managed to finish, a real‘milestone’ for me. I train duringthe winter, mostly, and my favouritewalk is from Kirk Michael (where Ilive) to Niarbyl Restaurant – where Idevour a gorgeous scone afterchanging from my yucky gear tonice, warm clothes.

I have been running Family Manx Magazine since 2007 and recently launched My Time – Isle of Man. Both are What’s On and Services guides - one forfamilies and the other for the Over 50s. I have a wonderful husband, Dermot, and an amazing son, Robert (17). I also teach the piano. A real joy!

He would never say it himself– and he would probably besurprised to hear others say it– but the news that MikeKewley has been recognisedin the New Year Honours willhave been welcomed bynearly everyone in Port Erinand many more beyond.

Mike served Port Erin

Commissioners, first as assistantclerk and then clerk, for 40 yearsuntil his retirement in February.

In the New Year Honours, he hasbeen nominated to receive aBritish Empire Medal for services

to local government and thecommunity.

It has to be one of the moredeserving awards to be allocatedto someone in public service.

Not that Mike would have youbelieve it.

‘I don’t feel I have done anythingmore than many other people inmany other organisations andother walks of life,’ he said.

Such a self-effacing reaction tothe honour is entirely in keepingwith the person who has servedPort Erin with such dedicationover such a long period of time.

This writer – at the start of hiscareer more than two decadesago - spent two years coveringthe South News in the Isle of Manand found Mike Kewley to be aconstant source of assistance tosomeone who was finding hisfeet both in journalism and in theIsle of Man.

Unerringly polite, always patientand calm, helpful wheneverpossible, and fiercely proud of hisvillage and full of commitment tohis work, if it wasn’t for the fact

he would probably cringe at thesuggestion, you’d be tempted tocall him ‘Mr Port Erin’.

Mike said of the honour: ‘I amabsolutely delighted, reallyamazed and surprised. It is notsomething I ever expected, I amquite overwhelmed.’

He admitted having to keep thenews to himself until the NewYear Honours list was publishedlast week was ‘very difficult’.

As for retirement, it seems Mikehas not been short of things todo.

‘I have played my golf; it hasbeen a wonderful summer forgolf! And I enjoy the garden and Ihave been travelling.

‘Both our boys (John and James)are off the Island so we havebeen to see them and otherrelatives . We have been awayquite a few times.’

Inevitably, given his role as acommunity lynchpin, Mike hasseen plenty of change in Port Erinin the past 40 years.

But that fierce commitment to

and pride in his village remains.

‘I think Port Erin has aged well,’said Mike, who is married toDorothy. ‘It is a changing scene. There is a very good traders’association working well with thecommissioners.

‘That relationship is proving itselfin various events and the two areworking together and I am surethat will continue to be enjoyed.’

He’s still Port Erin through andthrough.

• There was one other recipientin the New Year Honours.Mark Shimmin, who last yearretired as chief financial officerin the Treasury, is set toreceive an MBE for services tothe Manx Government and theeconomy.

Mr Shimmin had a 30-year careerin the civil service and becamechief financial officer in 2002,working with six Treasuryministers to develop finances andfiscal policy and being the drivingforce behind the Small CountriesFinancial ManagementProgramme.

That's the mission statement for local kitchen retailer IslandKitchens of Port Erin.

Working only with high quality manufacturers and the verybest local tradespeople, Island Kitchens provides a completerange of styles and services which provide customers withquality kitchens ataffordable prices.

“It’s almost two yearssince the business waslaunched,” said ownerKevin Murray, “and it’sbeen better than wecould have hoped, wehave installed numerouskitchens and receivedsuch positive feedback.

“One factor which wehave found repeated anumber of times is thata lot of customers areworking to a fixedbudget, so we haveresponded by sourcing a range of kitchens which maintainshigh levels of quality but which don’t break the bank.”

At the same time, Kevin is keen to avoid sales gimmickswhich have plagued the kitchens market for decades, apparently offering ''massive discounts'' at various times ofthe year such as New Year and Spring.

“We are not in the business of offering such gimmicks. Weoffer honest practical advice and genuine, fair prices all yearround.''

Island Kitchens has created a reputation in a very short timefor its quality, levels of service and - probably mostimportant of all - is the fact that it’s a local company with alocal display showroom and experienced staff whounderstand the local market.

Kevin is also keen toemphasise that theamount a customerpays for a new kitchenis not linked to levels ofservice.

“Whatever a customerpays for a dreamkitchen, the same levelsof service apply, whatever the budget.”

Island Kitchensprovides quotes free ofcharge and manager

Kevin Murray is happy to sit down and discuss your ideasand offer his advice.

“The real key to kitchens is listening to the customer andclearly defining what is required within a particular budget. Our intention is to make dream kitchens a reality, whateverthe budget.”

What does 2014 hold in store for you?As the fug of 2013 wisps away inthe night, like a quietly forgottenpolitical promise, it’s time to turnour attention to what the comingyear ahead has in store for us.Yes, we once again dust off Old Speller’sAlmanack to see what’s in the stars.Year of CultureAs year-long celebrations of the culturalwealth of the Isle of Man are a deservedsuccess, the biggest triumph is that allTynwald members learn the true value ofbooks and don’t try to close any libraries.IndustryAllan Bell decides to get some front lineexperience and acquire hands on knowledgein the mechanics sector. But when he looksat requests for assistance, he gives a lowwhistle and warns darkly: ‘This is going tocost you.’WeatherThe year’s weather, as usual, confoundsheadline writers and motorists. Police issueguidance to say that if it has got dark and ischucking it down with rain it’s okay to switchon your headlights, even if it’s 2pm.Meanwhile, the word ‘scorcher’ makes awelcome comeback as soon as there areback to back days of sunshine.CommunicationsThe battle for telecommunications

dominance continues apace as everyonedown the pub pretends to understandprecisely what 4G means.EducationThe threat of more cuts looms. As teachersfear another caning from the Belladministration, the chief minister sighs andconfesses: ‘This is going to hurt me morethan you.’TransportPeople continue to criticise the open skiespolicy for air travel while forgetting just howexpensive it was to fly with Manx Airlines. The same people also spend the yearpressing for genuine competition on the seasfor the Steam Packet. Fortunately, no onepays much attention.Film industryBecomes a key part of the local historycurriculum in schools.SportConfusion abounds when the 2013/14seasons finishes two weeks after the 2014/15season starts and newly promoted teamsdon’t know who they should be playing next.HealthAllan Bell spends a week with consultants atthe hospital to explain his governmentspending plans for the vital health sector.‘This might hurt a little,’ he says more thanonce.

The weather last year was sunnier and windier thanaverage, statistics produced by the Meteorological Officeat Ronaldsway have revealed. There were 1,720 hours of sunshine – 142 more than normal. But average wind speed over the year was 15mph, compared with the long termmean of 14.1mph.Last year was also marked by the major snowfall in March, followed by an early hotand dry spell in the summer and then an ‘unsettled’ end to the year.A Met Office spokesman said: ‘March was the headline month with significantsnowfall on March 22 and 23.‘This, along with a severe easterly gale caused significant drifting on the hills anddown to the west coast.‘Many roads were impassable and farmers suffered heavy livestock losses buried inthe drifts. Cable icing brought down powerlines leaving large communities withoutelectricity.‘The Ronaldsway stats confirmed it as the coldest March since 1969.’The lowest air temperature, of minus 1.6C, was recorded on March 12 while thelowest ground temperature plummeted to minus 8.2C on March 14.Cold weather in April and May meant a slow thaw of the snow.

It was a frosty year - 10 full weeks of ground frost compared with the long termaverage of seven. Most of the frost was in the late winter/early spring cold spell, rather than at the endof the year, which was milder.Average temperature for the year was exactly 10C, close to the long term average.‘This was due to the very cold spring being offset by the hot spell in summer,’ said aMet Office spokesman.July 9 was the hottest day, with the mercury rising to 25.6C.July saw the most sunshine, with a massive 291 hours – about 50 per cent aboveaverage. The temperature topped 20C on 15 days.It was also the driest month with just 30.2mm of rainfall, as water levels in the Island’sreservoirs dipped.October was the wettest month, with 168.7mm and there was a total of 874.8mmof rainfall recorded at Ronaldsway through the year, close to normal. While October was the wettest month, the flooding problems that hit the Island inDecember were in part due to saturated ground. The spokesman added: ‘A series of Atlantic depressions brought strong windscausing travel disruption and heavy rain with the inevitable localised flooding.’There were 24 days with sleet or snow, 26 days of fog, 15 days with hail and justtwo days with thunderstorms at Ronaldsway.

Sunnier and windier 2013 weather also saw extreme snow and a stormy end
