Who’s cream of the crop in the Tynnies? The last Tynwald sitting of thepolitical year has passed, liketrapped wind, leading to a sighof relief for all.To mark this momentous occasion, it is time toannounce the winners of the Tynnies.

It should be made clear that the Tynnies are notthe discarded remnants of an evening ofmuddled thinking that was followed by alifetime of regret, rather they are rewards forthe political endeavours of our esteemedrepresentatives in parliament.

Here are the main winners:

The Serves You Right Award goes to PhilGawne. After years of being very quick to pointout his department had been doing very wellat meeting spending restrictions and bringingin cut backs that no one had noticed,

Environment, Food and Agriculture MinisterPhil Gawne found himself moved in the recentcabinet reshuffle. He is now back at theDepartment of Infrastructure, a section ofgovernment which currently seems to confusemaking savings with charging people extra tomake up for its spending inefficiencies.

Pontius Pilate Award. This year’s winner isnone other than Chief Minister Allan Bell. Afterthe introduction of the controversial toilet tax –which saw people in the same shelteredhousing complex charged either £1 or £50 – heagreed it was unfair. If only he knew someonein a position where they could do somethingabout unfair legislation.

Celebrity Catfight Award. Goes to AlfieCannan and Chris Robertshaw for their spatover spending on a Department of Social Carereview. To be fair, it was more of a dogfightwith the Backbench Bulldog taking on the

Comin Corgi. But the clear antipathy betweenthe pair actually struck such a balance therecould be no winner. (Does that mean they’reboth losers? – Ed.)

The Human League Award for not beingwanted. There was strong competition for this, when you consider that David Anderson waseased out of the cabinet by Allan Bell, GrahamCregeen enjoyed the briefest of spells as aminister and John Shimmin resigned. But,when you look at the people who have been inand out of the revolving door to the cabinet,Brenda Cannell must be wondering exactlyhow badly she must be thought of to havenever made it through. Don’t worry Bren, theTynnies want you in their academy – well done!

CHARLES TURNER LTD has been trading now throughout the Island for 66 years in many guises. When the original Charles Turner started selling the odd tennis ball after acquiring the courts on

Bowring Road in Ramsey, it wasn’t long before the first CHARLES TURNER SPORTS opened onParliament Street. Since then there have been stores throughout the Island retailing in sports, bicycles, childrenswear, fishing, motorcycling, camping, menswear and toys to name a few. In

those 66 years there have been many changes in retail but CHARLES TURNER LTD andRC TURNER LTD remain, and are still keen to expand their portfolio of businesses.

At 47 Strand Street you’ll findthe Intersport Store which hasbeen in situ since 1984.Intersport is the largest sportsretailer in the world with over5300 stores in 39 countries, but is a group made up ofindependent retailers of whichRC Turner Ltd is one. Despitethe change in shop fascia andsignage, the shop is still a localbusiness run by the Turnerfamily as it has been in StrandStreet for almost 40 years. Theemphasis is on sports andsportspeople in store with ahuge range of productscovering most sports. It’s notabout professionals though, it’sabout the 2 mile jogger, theSunday morning footballer, thelose a few pounders, and theonce a year Andy Murrays.

There are long serving familiarfaces in store and you’ll alwaysget a friendly welcome andadvice that’s second to none. It’s a local sports shop with aninternational influence.

RC Turner Ltd has acquired a new store at45 Strand Street. Keeping with their

heritage in sport, FortyFive will be concernedwith the “SportsLifestyle” category andwill retail a more

fashionable range from the likes of AdidasOriginals, Nike, Onitsuka Tiger, Converseand New Balance to name a few. Thisarea of the business is more in keepingwith the heritage side of sports and it’sconnection to fashion without being toochangeable. This will be a more relaxedand chilled out environment which willprove to be more than somewhere toshop, but become a destination foryoungerconsumerswith amoremodernfeel anddesirableproduct. As well as the establishedbrands like Adidas and Nike, Bjorn Borgwill appeal to many of the ladies lookingfor different product”.The recent tough conditions in globalretail has obviously been difficult formany businesses, but RC Turner Ltdbelieve that there is a future in shops onHigh Streets offering desirable product, atgood prices. Over the 66 years of trading

the businesshas changedand alwaystried toevolve. Theyhope thattheir newstore, FortyFive will be

attractive to new customers and theirmore established stores at Garrey Corneiland Intersport will continue to provide theIsland with something they have alwayshad.

Garrey Corneil is synonymouson the Islandwith qualityMenswear, catering forthosegentlemenwho require personal serviceand unrivalled productknowledge. Established foralmost 30 years in VictoriaStreet, Garrey Corneil hasrecently moved to 51 StrandStreet to a more modern andaccessible store. We have keptour more traditional brandsincluding Rael Brook shirts,Label tailored suits, Weird Fishand Gurteen but added to our

stable withMaddoxStreet ofLondon,Loakefootwear,GabbicciVintage andMeyer. Westill have ourextensive

stock of cuff links, ties, handkerchiefs and waistcoatsas well as gent’s socks, hatsbelts and braces. The samefriendly and helpful GarreyCorneil team remains so youknow that the quality of servicewill not change, just becausethe surroundings have.

A Manxwoman is onthe adventureof a lifetimeas she travelsthe world.Currently on theSouth Americanleg of her epicjourney, 25-year-

old Gael Stigant has already savoured theatmosphere in Brazil during the world cup, gonefishing for piranhas and gone beneath theworld’s surface in a Bolivian mine – and shared adormitory with tattooed Welshmen!

Baldrine woman Gael this year took a six-monthsabbatical from her job as a senior reporter withThe Star newspaper in Sheffield. But the ideaactually started to form a year earlier, when shewas made redundant from a previous reportingjob. That, coupled with her ’25 Crisis’ – the sortmost of us can only wish for these days – led toher packing her bags and setting off.

Although she admitted to being ‘terrified’ at thestart of the journey, one month in she has alreadypacked in enough experiences to last mostpeople all their way up to their 50 Crisis, at least.

Her first full day saw Gael climb up the Pedra deGavea, a mountain in the Tijuca Forest, withstunning views of Rio. As the spectacular main

picture, of Gael taking in the amazing landscapedemonstrates, you need a head for heights.

Said Gael: ‘I nearly died climbing the bloodything but, my goodness, it was worth it.’

This had followed an inauspicious first night inRio, when her arrival at her accommodationwould not have looked out of place in a BridgetJones film.

‘I suspect the hostel staff saw the dodgy spellingof my name and assumed I was a man,’ Gaelconfided. ‘So I ended up in a dorm with sevenburly, heavily-tattooed Welshmen and a coupleof Aussie blokes who live in vest tops that flashas much toned flesh as possible.’

Gael says it was a complete coincidence sheended up in Brazil during the World Cup and, although football fever took over, the localpeople she spoke to still held concerns at theamount of taxpayers’ cash spent on the event.

Her time in Brazil also included a trip to Pantanal, the world’s largest freshwater floodpain, for aspot of fishing. While Gael didn’t manage to landany, her travel companion caught severalpiranhas!

They later enjoyed the fish, pan-fried. Gaelcommented: ‘Avoiding the teeth which were stillgrinning at me, I tucked in - and it wasn't halfbad!’

In Bolivia, Gael was struck by the poverty. Shealso went on a trip down a silver and zinc mine inPotosi. It proved a nerve-wracking experience.

Gael, the great-granddaughter of a Laxey miner, described ‘shuffling along narrow passagesankle-deep in water and crawling through tinytunnels with razor-sharp pieces of rock digginginto your knees’.

‘I'm quite proud of myself for only crying oncedown there.’

She added: ‘I don't think I did great-granddadMatty proud. But it's certainly made me evenmore proud of him.’

• After South America, Gael moves on toAuckland in New Zealand. You can keep upto date with Gael’s travel exploits via herblog here: http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog/gaelstigant/1/tpod.html

GUIDEThe Perfect Year to watch Sunset BoulevardTaylorian Productions is setto complete its trilogy ofLloyd-Webber classics withSunset Boulevard at theGaiety Theatre in Douglas. The same team that brought thehighly successful productions ofCATS and Evita is back with themovie-themed musical.

Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s promotershave entrusted the Isle of Mancompany with the British Isles

amateur premiere for theproduction.

In fact, Lloyd-Webber’s team wereso impressed, it actuallyapproached Taylorian to offer upthe musical.

Sunset Boulevard reinvents themovie as a romantic musicalspectacle.

Set in the heady opulence of 1940sHollywood, Taylorian is promisingIsland audiences another

spectacular musicalexperience.

‘It’s a tale whichpretty much has thelot,’ explainedproducer MattJames.

‘Drama, passion,great music,volatility and anunforeseenconclusion’.

‘After our last twoshows, AndrewLloyd-Webber’s

company approached

us and offered us the chance tostage this amateur premiere, notjust for the Isle of Man, but thewhole of the British Isles. Howcould we refuse?!’

And so the innovative design andcreative team from CATS – led bydirector/choreographer JohnCumberlidge - has been broughtback together to produce the mostglamorous period costumes andstaging created specifically for thisproduction.’

Add in the hit songs With OneLook, As If We Never SaidGoodbye and the number onesingle The Perfect Year, the iconicmoviee is being transformed ontothe Gaiety stage from August 4-16.

Sunset Boulevard – the British Islesamateur premiere – runs nightly atthe Gaiety Theatre from August 4-16 at 7.30pm. (No show August10.)
