Best of Me...Scott 'CAGEddEVIL' CaldwellBest meal (cooked by you or byanother):I am ashamed to say I am an awfulcook and it's the one place on earthI feel completely out of my depth. The idea of being responsible for allthose buttons and lights gives me anosebleed. A nice steak with pasta(if someone else cooks it).

Best outfit or single piece ofclothing:

I have my own training gear so Iwould have to say anything withCAGEddEVIL COMBATIVES on it butI do enjoy putting on a nice suit for

an evening out.

Best memory:Being inducted into the Martial ArtsIllustrated Hall of Fame inNovember for my contribution toReality Based Martial Arts was avery proud moment for me, but myBlack Belts took more blood, sweatand tears, so probably receivingthem.

Best way to spend the day:I live like a monk so there's little elsethat gives me as much pleasure astraining and teaching. Nothingcompares to being at the academy

on my own with the music blasting, pushing myself beyond my limits.

Best advice:"Work hard until your heroes

become your rivals!!!"It's the mantra I live by and aconstant in my mind that I use topick myself up regardless of whatlife has thrown my way. Best place in the Isle of Man:Clear Mountain Martial ArtsAcademy of course! Come downand join me anytime you like ;)

I am a no nonsense kind of guy whose eyes have seen more than they should in this world and who uses those experiencesto translate martial arts into more practical, life saving techniques for today's streets. I co-own Clear Mountain Martial Artswith my partners Bernard and Shannon.

A young racer’s careerhas moved up a gearwith the announcementhe has been signed tocompete in FormulaFord this year.Chris Mealin, 20, will be one offour drivers competing withFalcon Motorsport this year, including last year’s FormulaFord Scholarship winner HarrisonScott.

It is a big boost for Chris to beracing alongside him in theDunlop MSA Formula FordChampionship.

Manxman Chris comes toFormula Ford having racked upconsiderable experience inkarting, in which he startedcompeting on the Isle of Man atthe age of 13. He passed hiscircuit-racing ARDS test in 2012and has since contested rounds

of the 750MC’sSaxo series andlast year also tookpart in the V8Supercup Dutchoval racing.

During 2013 hetested a FormulaFord at most UKcircuits.

His ultimateambition is tomake it all the wayto Formula One.

Chris, who firstfeatured in theManx Advertiserlast year when hisV8 Supercupexploits madepeople sit up andtake notice, said:‘Really single-seaters havealways been in my heart but Ididn’t have a way into it before.

‘Things got rolling last year and Ifirst tried the Formula Ford atthe Sampler Day in Novemberand then I went down to Spainwith Falcon for an extended testand that went really well.

‘I love the car and can’t wait toget back in it – the speed whenthe turbo kicks in is justunbelievable. I have a lot tolearn about racing, and I’m veryhappy to be in a team with asecond-year driver like Harrison, from whom I can learn.’

Falcon principal Nick Streatfieldsaid: ‘Chris will be an asset tothe team. He tested with us inSpain in December and settledinto the team very quickly andwent extremely well. We arelooking forward to working withhim.’

Formula Ford Championshipmanager Sam Roach said:‘Falcon Motorsport and HarrisonScott made a big impression onthe championship in theirmaiden season of EcoBoostracing, and I am sure that theywill be among the combinationsto beat.

‘Chris Mealin will be an asset tothe championship as well, andthe news that Falcon is planning

a four-car team is a welcomeboost this early in the pre-season. All the signs are thatgrid numbers will be improvedfor the coming season and thecompetition no less intense.’

The Formula Ford EcoBoostChampionship 2014 getsunderway at Brands Hatch onMarch 30 and will feature 30races at 10 rounds alongside thebiggest attraction in UKmotorsport: the British TouringCar Championship. Thechampionship will boast livecoverage on ITV4, as well asbumper trackside spectatorattendance, and boasts a£30,000 cash prize fund.

Last year, Chris was in with astrong chance of winning theRookie of the Year title in theLate Model V8 Supercup goinginto the final race of the seasonat Raceway Venray in theNetherlands, but he wasthwarted at the final hurdlewhen mechanical problemsdenied him the championship.

Why pushing a pram takes youinto a different worldLife looks very different from behindthe wheels of the pram. Whetherit’s just a different pace of life orobstacles that appear to have beenput in your way in order to buggyup your plans, it gives you a wholenew perspective on the world. Here are just some of the things thepram pushers of the world havelearned:• Strangely, the outlets where you are

least likely to receive assistance withopening and closing doors, from amember of staff, tend to bepharmacies. The most helpful arenearly always in butcher’s shops, whichis no surprise as butchers always tendto be the most cheerful of people(probably related to the fact that theycan vent any frustrations by aiming ameat cleaver at a carcass).

• Pushing a pram on a footpath is theequivalent of driving a Renault Clio ona road. People think they have toovertake you or it is an insult to theirvery existence.

• Every public lift has its own individualsmell.

• Your daytime social life starts to begoverned by ease of access. Even ifyou are not pushing a pram when you

visit a new café, you are scouting thevenue to assess whether there issufficient space, if there are decenthigh chairs and what the reaction ofstaff is to other children. It’s a bit sad, really.

• (If the child whose pram you arepushing is your own, you probablydon’t have a night time social life.)

• Fire doors are very important, but theydon’t half make things tricky at times. As for revolving doors….

• It’s very easy to forget that, with three-wheeled prams, one end is likely to bea little wider than the other. Youshould make the effort to apologisewhen you clip someone’s heels – it’snot usually their fault. If it was theirfault, however, it’s permissible to do itagain.

• Regardless of size, if you buy morethan one item of shopping, you willrun out of space under the pram.

• When taking your baby out on a two-hour walk to get them off to sleepthey will only fall asleep after one hourand fifty minutes. However, if youwant your baby to remain awake inthe pram, they will nod off within aquarter of an hour.

To be awarded a covetedscholarship to spend ninemonths in the USA is anachievement in itself. To do soafter having your educationdisrupted by the devastatingeffects of ME is remarkable. But that is what former CastleRushen High School and Isle of ManCollege student Lorrae Fox hasdone. She is set to head for theUniversity of Idaho in the USA inAugust, after being selected for theElla Olesen scholarship.Lorrae Fox will follow a long line oflocal students in spending ninemonths among hundreds ofinternational students. It hasn’t been easy for Lorrae, currently a student at the Universityof Lancaster. Her teenage years were blighted bysuffering from myalgicencephalopathy, also known aschronic fatigue syndrome. Not only did she have to battle the

debilitatingsymptoms thatkept her outof school, shealso had toovercomescepticismfrom somewho remainunconvincedas to the

veracity of the condition.Lorrae, now 22, told the ManxAdvertiser: ‘I didn’t go to school fora bit of year nine, I didn’t go at allfor year 10. Year 11 was part time atcollege and Castle Rushen HighSchool.’After doing four GCSEs she wentback to school for year 12 and wasat the college for year 13.She said: ‘The time I was ill is prettyhazy.‘The doctors weren’t particularlyhelpful. School definitely tried – theysent people out.’She said there was still a misplacedstigma attached to ME.‘I was housebound for a year and soI didn’t see lots of other peopleother than my family, who werereally supportive.‘I loved school. I was there every dayand it wasn’t a case of not wantingto go to school or making it up‘I was the last person to be doingthat so it was quite hard whenpeople told you you were making itup’ The scholarship is named after thelate Miss Ella Olesen, a formerregistrar of the university who diedin 1985. Her Manx ancestry – hermother Margaret Teare was born inBallaugh and emigrated to Americain 1890 – led her to gift thescholarship in 1971. It is awardedannually to a female degree studentwho has been supported through

her studies by the Department ofEducation and Children.Lorrae, from Port Erin, is workingtowards a BA in English languageand linguistics and will graduate thissummer. She is an academic writing mentorfor both undergraduate andpostgraduate students and this has

sparked in her an interest inreturning to the Island to teach.Lorrae said her family was ‘over themoon’ about the scholarship, whichwould give her the chance to’represent and champion the Isle ofMan while studying in a place I’veaspired to experience for manyyears’.

“It was hard when people said you were making it up”

ME FACTFILETHE ME Association says myalgic encephalopathy, also known as chronicfatigue syndrome or post viral fatigue syndrome, is an illness of‘uncertain cause’ and affects about 250,000 people in Britain. It afflicts people of any age and can lead to ‘severe and debilitatingfatigue, painful muscles and joints, disordered sleep, gastricdisturbances, poor memory and concentration’.It is often linked to a viral infection but other triggers can include anoperation or an accident, or it can arrive via a ‘slow, insidious onset’.The effects can change lives ‘drastically’, says the association, and itsome cases it can make education or employment impossible for thevictim.‘For all, social life and family life become restricted and in some casesseverely strained. People may be housebound or confined to bed formonths or years.’While there are treatments for some of the symptoms, there is noaccepted cure or universally effective treatment. An association spokesman added: ‘ME/CFS has attracted more than itsfair share of controversy. Initially, and for many years, there was adebate as to whether it was actually an illness at all.‘Although the situation is still not perfect, many influential bodies - theWorld Health Organisation, the Department of Social Security, theDepartment of Health, the Royal Colleges of Physicians, Psychiatristsand General Practitioners amongst them - are now in agreement that itis real.’ www.meaassociation.org.uk

Artists are to wing it to Isle of ManArtists will be coming out of thesky for Island of Culture this year! Citywing is supporting the Artist on a Planeinitiative that will see a different creative talentvisiting the Island every month during the ArtsCouncil’s year-long cultural celebration. The scheme to fly in artists is the idea ofHelen Fox, programme manager for art, design and media at the Isle of Man Collegeand Citywing has stepped in to fund returnflights from the UK for the artists.‘The idea came about through a discussionwith our BA honours Fine Art degree externalexaminer, Keith McIntyre,’ said Helen.‘Keith, who is head of art at NorthumbriaUniversity, visited the Island in November tolaunch the Market Hall Project, in which theCollege and Douglas Borough Council arejointly creating a community arts hub inMarket Hill, Douglas.‘The idea is that visiting artists will talk abouttheir work, sharing with us their own journeys.‘We have a great mixture of artists coming totalk about a wide range of areas, not justpainters. All talks will be free and open tostudents, teachers, artists – in fact anyone who

is interested. Details will be published as eachartist is booked.’Citywing managing director David Buck said:‘Island of Culture 2014 promises to be afabulous celebration of the Isle of Man, its artand the creativity of its people.
