Dear Friends,The Church always begins the first Sunday of Lent with the Gospel story of the Temptations of Jesus in the desert.The desert is significant because it is the place were needs are magnified. We hear the words of the devil that tempt Jesus with food; with her earthly power and wealth; with false worship. Jesus responded to the Temptations with the firm conviction that all His needs are dependent on God.If only it would be so easy for us as it is for Jesus.We are tempted in many ways each day. One could say that we live in the desert all the time. Some of our Temptations remain a lifelong struggle, others are fleeting. They challenge our belief in God. Grace intercedes however even in the worst of times.

About a month ago I was talking to a middle-aged married man with three sons. He was complaining about the 14 candidates that were in the mayoral primary. From there he spoke about how the whole world is messed up, nothing seems solid anymore, even the church is in turmoil. I felt his despair.I then asked him about his sons. With a father’s love he spoke of their achievements both in their relationships and in their careers. After a while he said to me that maybe there is hope for the world.Hope is a grace we receive from God that helps us face the difficult times.Another temptation that we face is pride. We criticize others, judge them and gossip about them because we are insecure ourselves. We have a need to feel that we are better than someone else. God levels us by giving the gift of humility. Humility keeps us grounded in who we are as children of God.These and many other Temptations are presented to you and me. May this Lent be a time of confronting those Temptations with the assurance that God’s grace is always abundant.I would like to share the following with you for your Lenten reflection.

CONFESSIONS

Don’t forget to rejoice with the sacrament of Reconciliation this Lent. In addition to our Lenten Reconciliation services, St. John Berchmans offers confessions every Saturday at 4 p.m.

LENTEN PRACTICES

Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. Let us offer our sacrifices to the Lord.

Brian De LeónBrian discovered St. John Berchmans thanks to Fr. Wayne Watts. Fr. Wayne encouraged Brian to join the RCIA to attain the sacrament of Confirmation. Deacon Willie has been preparing Brian for this special sacrament. Brian says his favorite part of the RCIA process so far has been learning about Jesus and growing in his faith.

Brian is originally from Guerrero, Mexico. He migrated to the US for a better life. Brian has been coming to SJB for 8 years. He works in maintenance, enjoys playing soccer, video games, and going fishing. Favorite types of films? Action! Let us accompany Brian through his journey!

STATIONS OF THE CROSSSOUP WITH SUBSTANCE

Bilingual Stations of the Cross will begin at 7pm each Friday during Lent.

Soup with Substance will take place in the parish hall immediately following the stations. You’ll get to enjoy yummy soup and bread as we listen to a guest speaker. This Friday, March 15, James Erler and Libia Paez-Howard will join us to discuss the implications of the Renew My Church process. We now know that St. John Berchmans’ “activation date” is January 2021, but what exactly does that entail? Join us on March 15 to find out.

LENTEN SERVICE PROJECT - TOILETRY DRIVE

Small toiletries and hygienic items will be collected at all Masses during the weekend of March 16 and 17 and will be organized for distribution in the Soup with substance on Friday, April 12. All are welcome to help! Items

received will be donated to Catholic Charities.

LENTEN RECONCILIATION &

TAIZÉ PRAYER SERVICEOur bilingual Taizé Prayer/Reconciliation service will be held

on Tuesday, April 9th at 7pm. Lent is the perfect time to examine our consciences and receive the Sacrament of Penance in preparation to celebrate the joy of the Easter season. Join us in this service filled with song, prayer, and mercy. We will hold a second Taizé Prayer Service without Reconciliation on Friday, March 22nd at 7 p.m.

Queridos Amigos,

La Iglesia siempre comienza el primer domingo de Cuaresma con la historia del Evangelio de las Tentaciones de Jesús en el desierto.

El desierto es significativo porque es el lugar donde se agrandan las necesidades. Escuchamos las palabras del diablo que provocan a Jesús con comida; con su poder y riqueza terrenales; con la adoración falsa. Jesús respondió a las Tentaciones con la firme convicción de que todas sus necesidades dependen de Dios.

Si tan solo así fuera de fácil para nosotros como lo es para Jesús.

Somos tentados de muchas maneras cada día. Se podría decir que vivimos en el desierto todo el tiempo. Algunas de nuestras Tentaciones siguen siendo una lucha de por vida, otras son fugaces. Estas desafían nuestra creencia en Dios. Sin embargo, la gracia intercede, incluso en los peores momentos.

Hace aproximadamente un mes estaba hablando con un hombre casado de mediana edad con tres hijos. Se quejaba de los 14 candidatos que estaban participando en la primaria para la alcaldía. De allí habló sobre cómo el mundo entero está en mal estado, ya nada parece sólido, incluso la Iglesia está en crisis. Sentí su desesperación. Entonces le pregunté sobre sus hijos. Con el amor padre, habló de sus logros tanto en sus relaciones como en sus carreras. Al cabo de un rato me dijo que tal vez haya esperanza para el mundo.

La esperanza es una gracia que recibimos de Dios que nos ayuda a enfrentar los tiempos difíciles.

Otra tentación que enfrentamos es el orgullo. Criticamos a los demás, los juzgamos y chismeamos sobre ellos porque somos inseguros. Tenemos la necesidad de sentir que somos mejores que los demás. Dios nos nivela dándonos el don de la humildad. La humildad nos mantiene arraigados en quienes somos como hijos de Dios.

Estas y muchas otras tentaciones se nos presentan a ustedes y a mí. Que esta Cuaresma sea un tiempo para confrontar esas Tentaciones con la seguridad de que la gracia de Dios siempre es abundante.

Me gustaría compartir con usted lo siguiente para su reflexión de Cuaresma.

Abstente de juzgar a otros: deléitate en Cristo morando en ellos.Abstente de énfasis sobre diferencias; deléitate en la unidad de toda vidaAbstente de aparente obscuridad; deléitate en la realidad de la luzAbstente de cólera; deléitate en paciencia.Abstente de pesimismo; deléitate en optimismo.Abstente de preocupación; deléitate en confianza.Abstente de quejas; deléitate en apreciación.Abstente de hostilidad; deléitate en la no violencia.Abstente de amargura; deléitate en el perdón.Abstente de auto preocupación; deléitate en compasión por otros.Abstente de los hechos que deprimen; deléitate en verdades que elevan.Abstente de sospecha; deléitate en verdad.Abstente de los pensamientos que debilitan; deléitate en las promesas que inspiran.Abstente de chisme; deléitate en silencio útil.(Adaptado de una oración de Cuaresma por William Arthur Ward)

CONFESIONES

No se olvide de gozar con el sacramento de la Reconciliación durante esta Cuaresma. Además de nuestros servicios de reconciliación de Cuaresma, San Juan Berchmans ofrece confesiones todos los sábados a las 4 p.m.

REGULACIONES DE CUARESMA

Abstinencia: Todos los católicos mayores de 14 años deben abstenerse de comer carne el Miércoles de Ceniza y todos los viernes de Cuaresma. El Ayuno debe ser observado el Miércoles de Ceniza por todos los católicos que han cumplido los 18 años, pero no han llegado a los 59. Estas personas solo pueden comer una comida completa y dos comidas pequeñas si son necesarias para mantener las fuerzas, de acuerdo a las necesidades individuales, pero no se permite alimento sólido entre las comidas. El especial ayuno de Cuaresma, así como la abstinencia, son obligatorios el Viernes Santo y también son recomendados el Sábado Santo. Ofrezcamos nuestros sacrificios al Señor.

Brian De LeónBrian descubrió San Juan Berchmans gracias al Padre Wayne Watts. El P. Wayne alentó a Brian a unirse al RICA para obtener el sacramento de la Confirmación. El Diácono Willie ha estado preparando a Brian para este sacramento especial. Brian dice que su parte favorita del proceso de RICA hasta ahora ha sido aprender sobre Jesús y crecer en su fe.

Brian es originario de Guerrero, México. Emigró a Estados Unidos para una vida mejor. Brian ha estado viniendo a SJB por 8 años. Trabaja en mantenimiento, le gusta jugar fútbol, videojuegos y salir a pescar. ¿Tipos favoritos de películas? ¡Acción! ¡Acompañemos a Brian en su proceso!

VÍA CRUCIS/SOPA CON SUSTANCIA

El Vía Crucis bilingüe comenzará a las 7pm todos los viernes durante la Cuaresma.

Sopa con sustancia se llevará a cabo en el Salón Parroquial inmediatamente después del Vía Crucis. Disfrutará de una deliciosa sopa y pan mientras escuchamos a un orador invitado. Este viernes, 15 de marzo, James Erler y Libia Páez-Howard se unirán a nosotros para discutir las implicaciones del proceso Renueva Mi Iglesia. Ahora sabemos que la “fecha de activación” de San Juan Berchmans es enero de 2021, pero ¿qué implica esto exactamente? Acompáñenos el 15 de marzo para averiguarlo.

ORACIÓN TAIZÉNuestro servicio bilingüe de Oración Taizé/Reconciliación se llevará a

cabo el martes 9 de abril a las 7pm. La Cuaresma es el tiempo perfecto para examinar nuestras conciencias y recibir el sacramento de la reconciliación en preparación para celebrar la alegría del tiempo de Pascua. Acompáñenos en este servicio lleno de cantos, oración y misericordia. Un segundo Servicio de Oración de Taizé sin reconciliación se llevará a cabo el viernes 22 de marzo a las 7 p.m.
