SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT Genesis 15:5-12, 17-18, Philippians 3:17–4:1 or 3:20–4:1 Luke 9:28b-36 Brief Reflection: Jesus is beloved Son and fulfill-ment of God’s promises. At this early point in our Lenten journey, our readings remind us of God’s promises to humanity and his faithfulness to those promises. Full of the same hope that once spurred Abraham on to leave his homeland and Paul to preach the Gospel with commitment and fidelity, they now seek to encourage us in our Lenten disciplines.

A Word from Fr. James… During the season of Lent, we take time to really evaluate our lives and our prayer so that we will turn away from those things that keep us from God and the life that he has created for us. We need conversion. We need to transfigure our heart to be more like the heart of Christ.

This weekend in the gospel, we hear the familiar text of the Transfiguration of Jesus. Usually we hear this reading in August when we celebrate the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The Lord Jesus takes three disciples with him up on the mountain and there they experience the Lord in a way that others have not. He was transfigured and appeared with Moses and Elijah. This transfiguration reveals to us who Jesus is and shows us the purity of his heart.

This is the same purity that we are called to embrace in our own lives. This is the transfiguration that we need to experi-ence, to become once again white as snow, with no sins in our hearts.

One way that we can do this is with the Sacrament of Recon-ciliation. During Lent, I am spending a bit more time in the confessional on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I am starting thirty minutes early. Wednesday confessions are from 5:00 to 6:30 pm and Saturday confessions are from 3:00 to 4:30 pm. I would encourage all of you to take advantage of this extra time for reconciliation.

On Wednesday evening this next week, March 20, we will have our parish reconciliation service starting at 7:00 pm at Sacred Heart Church. We will have several priests from our neighboring communities that will join me to help with con-fessions that evening. I know that this is a bit early in the Lenten season, but I would hope you will take advantage of this time to experience God’s mercy and forgiveness.

Lenten Blessings to you all, Fr. James

Prayer Intentions

Let us pray for those who are sick in our communi-ty. Remember these parishioners and friends of the Parish in your prayers: +Peter(Harry) Nosack and family (funeral pending) Maria Trinidad

Rex Davis (cancer and surgery recovery)

May you find consolation in knowing that you are thought of and prayed for in this time of need.

Please remember, DO NOT bring flowers into the worship space during Lent! or they will be discarded.

According to the Church’s Canon Law, all healthy Catholics from age 14 to 59 are required to fast and abstain from meat on Good Friday, and to abstain from meat on all other Fridays of Lent.

The Flores and Ruiz family would like to give thanks and appreciation for all the amazing sup-port and help but most of all the prayers for our wonderful mother, Virginia (Vicky). Thank you again and blessings to all.

Catholic Jewelry and Rosary Sale The Children and Youth Faith Formation will be having a jewelry sale after the Masses at Sacred Heart Church on the weekend of March 16-17.

Challenge yourself this year, and go beyond the usual practice of "giving up" something. Now is a great time to take stock of your spiritual life and to grow in it. Not sure where to start? Check out these ideas: 1. Make a commitment to read the Sunday scriptures (usccb.org/readings) before you go to Mass. In the same way that reading up on football or basketball players, opposing teams and coaching strategies will help you experience a game more fully, familiarizing yourself with the readings ahead of time will help you experience them in a deeper way on Sunday. 2. Think about what you spend your money on. Do you buy too many clothes? Spend too much on dinner out? On drinks ? Pick one type of expenditure that you'll "fast" from during Lent, and then give the money you would usually spend to a local charity like the food bank. 3. Take something on - 40 days of letter writing, 40 acts of kindness, 40 phone calls to the important people in your life.

4. Go to a weekday Mass one day during the week. Many parishes offer them early in the morning, at noon, or after work. Daily Masses are often more intimate and shorter than Sunday Mass. Use your CRS Rice Bowl and Lenten Calendar daily to guide your Lenten prayer, fasting and almsgiving. As a family, read the stories of hope and daily reflections to inspire your Lenten journey—and guide your Lenten almsgiving.

Prepare simple meatless meals on Fridays throughout Lent, in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world.

Peter will consider two aspects of the Crucifixion that are closely connected with the liturgy of Holy Week, namely, the descent into hell and the passion and death to Christ as the great Exodus event. For more info call Cecile Beckerman at 503-393-5041. Cost is $15 a session. Beverages and snacks are provided.
