SAINT JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA March 17, 2019 Transfigured by the Son Dear People and Friends of Saint Josephs, The Transfiguration of the Lord on the mountain displays a glimpse of Christs glory as the Son of God. This powerful experience for Peter, James and John provided them needed encouragement after hearing both of Jesusown prediction of his Passion and the cost of being his disciples. When one encounters the Risen Lord, this person, too, is transfigured by the glory and grace of the Son. The initial experience of our transfiguration occurs in the waters of Baptism as we become Gods sons and daughters. And the process of this transfiguration continues throughout our lives, being even more intense during the 40 days of Lent. So, the Second Sunday of Lent encourages us, in the midst of our difficult struggle against sin and temptation, not to become discouraged or indifferent, but to persevere in our pilgrimage toward the glory of Gods beloved children. In The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) , the Catholic Church opens the way for all of us to experience this transfiguration. Firstly, the Church presents to the Christian community those who are seeking this transfiguration in their own lives—those desiring to receive the New Life in Christ through the Sacraments of Initiation. Catechumens demonstrate their desire for transfiguration by Gods grace by writing their names in the Book of the Elect, which draws upon the image of the Book of Life in the Book of Revelation. This past Sunday, our catechumen, David Merli, became part of The ELECT, chosen by Bishop Gainer to receive the Sacraments of Initiation—Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist— whereby the Elect become beloved sons and daughters of God. As we see others diligently seek to become Gods sons and daughters, we ourselves are MORE INSPIRED to live faithfully what we have already received in our own Baptism, and we strive to preserve and protect it. At the same time, the newly ELECT look to us to help them prepare to become and live as Gods beloved sons and daughters. Transfigured by the Son

Dear People and Friends of Saint Joseph’s,

The Transfiguration of the Lord on the mountain displays a glimpse of Christ’s glory as the Son of God. This powerful experience for Peter, James and John provided them needed encouragement after hearing both of Jesus’ own prediction of his Passion and the cost of being his disciples.

When one encounters the Risen Lord, this person, too, is transfigured by the glory and grace of the Son. The initial experience of our transfiguration occurs in the waters of Baptism as we become God’s sons and daughters. And the process of this transfiguration continues throughout our lives, being even more intense during the 40 days of Lent. So, the Second Sunday of Lent encourages us, in the midst of our difficult struggle against sin and temptation, not to become discouraged or indifferent, but to persevere in our pilgrimage toward the glory of God’s beloved children.

In The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), the Catholic Church opens the way for all of us to experience this transfiguration. Firstly, the Church presents to the Christian community those who are seeking this transfiguration in their own lives—those desiring to receive the New Life in Christ through the Sacraments of Initiation. Catechumens demonstrate their desire for transfiguration by God’s grace by writing their names in the Book of the Elect, which draws upon the image of the Book of Life in the Book of Revelation.

This past Sunday, our catechumen, David Merli, became part of The ELECT, chosen by Bishop Gainer to receive the Sacraments of Initiation—Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist—whereby the Elect become beloved sons and daughters of God. As we see others diligently seek to become God’s sons and daughters, we ourselves are MORE INSPIRED to live faithfully what we have already received in our own Baptism, and we strive to preserve and protect it.

The Diocesan Annual Campaign The Diocesan Annual Campaign, formerly

known at the Bishop’s Annual Lenten Appeal, effectively enables us as Catholics to provide and participate in the important work of the Church in our diocese, and thus bring Jesus to others.

Here at Saint Joseph’s we will launch the Diocesan Annual Campaign with our In-Pew Pledging beginning this weekend and March 23rd-24th. This year’s parish goal is $87,000 and with the participation of every family, we will be able to fulfill this responsibility. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Institution of Acolytes—On Sunday, February 24, the 37 diocesan

deacon candidates were instituted acolytes by Bishop Ronald Gainer. The

General Instruction on the Roman Missal (GIRM) states “The acolyte is

instituted for service at the altar and to assist the Priest and Deacon. It is his

place principally to prepare the altar and the sacred vessels and, if necessary,

to distribute the Eucharist to the faithful as an

extra-ordinary minister.” The acolyte may also

purify the sacred vessels. While many of these

services may be shared by other laypersons,

the acolyte bears a particular responsibility to

the ministry at the altar. Bishop Gainer and the

diaconal formators request that all the Faithful

of the Diocese welcome the ministry of our

new acolytes and pray for them and their

families as they continue their discernment

and their formation for ordination.

Congratulations to our own Armando

Torres.
