Faithful Chronicles By Father Frank D. Almade
Good Shepherd | Madonna del Castello | St. Colman | St. John Fisher | St. Jude the Apostle | St. Maurice | Word of God
Many of you have heard me tell this
(apocryphal) story. But it bears repeating.
Two women went to the funeral Mass
of a dear friend of theirs (when the churches
were open!). They left the church and walked
home. One said to the other, “That was a nice
funeral, with some wonderful music.” The other
agreed. “Father had good words to say about our
friend.” The other agreed. The first one stopped,
paused, and said, “You know, the way Father talked
you’d think that all of us are going to die.”
Today is Easter Sunday. We remember and
celebrate the resurrection from the dead of Jesus Christ
our Savior and Lord. We tell the stories of the women
of Jerusalem, who came to the tomb on that first Easter
morning (after observing strictly the Sabbath) to anoint
his body and pray for him. We hear the angel say, “Do
not be afraid. He is not here. He has arisen and gone
to Galilee.” We join with Peter and the apostles on the
shore of the Sea of Galilee as the Risen Lord Jesus eats
breakfast with them.
Easter is a day and a season of hope, of
springtime, of new life. Easter is a day and a season of
joy. Easter is full of brilliant flowers, warm sunshine,
and the presence of the Risen Lord.
But…….Before we can honestly and fully
embrace Easter, we have to address and accept the
harsh reality of death. Right now as I write (ten days
before Easter) and as you read this, people in our
country and throughout the world are dying of a tiny
virus which can only be seen under a microscope. This
is the same coronavirus (COVID-19) which has
stopped economies and industries in their tracks, and
brought the world to the brink of recession, maybe
depression. Right now as I write and as you read this,
thousands of others are dying in the painful and usual
ways: heart disease, cancer, stroke, other respiratory
diseases, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, pneumonia, accidents,
suicide. Right now our time on earth is limited, with
the length known only by God Almighty.
I comment upon the finality of death not to
depress anyone, but to make sure we fully embrace our
humanity. For to be human is to live, and to die. It’s
just a matter of when.
Jesus faced his death with religious dignity.
Three times on his final journey to Jerusalem from
Galilee he predicted the manner of his death to the
apostles. In the garden of Gethsemane he begged his
heavenly Father to put off his death, only to override
this prayer with the complete acceptance of his Father’s
will—to be betrayed by his friends, suffer, be nailed to
a cross, and die one of the most horrible deaths
dreamed up by evil men.
We too have to face our own death, and the
deaths of those we love. We too have to pray as Jesus
did, “Not my will but yours be done.” When we do,
then, and only then, are we prepared to accept the utter
shock of resurrection, the incredible news of One who
walked out of the tomb and returned from the dead, the
joys of Easter, the possibility of life and love in heaven
without end in the communion of the saints.
This year we are forced to pray without our
sisters and brothers gathered in churches and basilicas,
in fields and rooms large and small. This year you are
challenged to pray as families and households, in small
groups or alone. But pray we can, and pray we will.
As the priests and deacons have prayed the sacred
liturgies of Holy Week and the Great Three Days of
Easter in empty church buildings, we have been very
mindful of our spiritual communion with each and
every parishioner, each and every Catholic, all
Christians, and all God’s children throughout the
world.
This pandemic will end. The virus will die, or
be conquered by the skills of researchers concocting a
vaccine, and be overcome by the everyday sacrifices of
millions who have practiced social disciplining and
thorough hand washing. That is a death we look
forward to, as soon as possible.
Reflect upon the reality of death, your death,
the death of the son of Mary almost 2,000 years ago.
Do so, and you will be prepared to rejoice for 50 days
(or 50 years) in the Resurrection of Christ our Savior
on Easter.

POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER TO OUR LADY
IMPLORING HER PROTECTION AMID
THE CORONAVIRUS
O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
EASTER DAILY PRAYER
For your saving death, O Christ,
And your glorious Resurrection,
Let all the earth cry out with joy!
For the glad tidings of your gospel,
and your wondrous ascension into heaven,
Let all the earth cry out with joy!
For your gift or daily discipleship,
And the sending of the Spirit each day,
Let all the earth cry out with joy! Alleluia!

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION PRAYER
by Saint Alphonsus Liguori
My Jesus,
I believe that You
are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.
EASTER JOKE
A parishioner was in front of me coming out of church
one day, and the preacher was standing at the door as he
always is to shake hands. He grabbed the parishioner by
the hand and pulled him aside. The Pastor said to him,
“You need to join the Army of the Lord!” The parishioner
replied, “I’m already in the Army of the Lord, Pastor.”
Pastor questioned, “how come I don’t see you except at
Christmas and Easter?” He whispered back, “I’m in the
secret service.”
Historically associated with plagues, the Madonna of Monte
Berico is the perfect intercessor for our current coronavirus
outbreak. The following novena may be said and offered for
the petition of a swift end to the spread and for a maternal
protection for all .
Novena to Our Lady of Monte Berico
O Most Holy Virgin, Mother of God and my Mother Mary, I
thank you that you have deigned to appear on Monte
Berico and I thank you for all the graces you grant here to
those who turn to you. Nobody ever prayed to you in vain.
I, too, resort to you and beg you for the Passion and Death
of Jesus and for your pains: welcome me, o’ merciful
Mother, under your mantle, which is a maternal mantle;
grant me the particular grace that I ask of You [your petition
here] and protect me from all evil and especially from sin
which is the greatest evil. Oh make, oh Mary, my Mother,
that I always enjoy your loving protection in life and even
more in death and then come to see you in heaven and to
thank and bless you forever. Amen. Madonna of Monte
Berico, pray for us.
O sweet Virgin, pious mother of love, Like this Ave rising
from the heart.
Ave, ave, ave, Maria
Ave, ave, ave, Maria
O Virgin, shine as a star in the sky, Motherly defend your
faithful children.
Ave, ave, ave Maria
Ave, ave, ave, Maria

Easter Prayer of Thanksgiving
Good and gracious heavenly Father,
we come before you on this Easter Sunday
with full and grateful hearts for the gift of
the Paschal Mystery that you showed us
in the life, death, and resurrection of your Son,
our brother by adoption, Jesus Christ.
Bless us and all those who profess belief in your saving love.
Bless also those who have yet to profess belief in you.
You are God for all.
We ask all this in Christ's name.
Amen.
