The 2013 edition of Jeff’s Fun Run is in the books. New stops, new ending, and almost 200 vehicles at the finish line made for the best event ever. With last minute donations from Enderle Center, Ken Grody Ford, Mattson’s Radiator and HILLCO, every for the Poker Run was truly something that you would want and thanks to Rudy and Abe, the 50/50 was the largest ever. All members of Pickups Limited pitched in for a few hours working the card stops and directing the parking at the start and finish. Thanks also to Gloria and Dianne for taking on the difficult job of registration and shirt sales; everything went off without a hitch.

The route covered just under 50 miles bringing us to Prestige Hobbies where Scott Kastelitz and Norm Marshall did their Christmas shopping, Then it was off to Matt-son’s Radiator where Jack and JR served up fresh pressed apple cider. Norton’s Custom Hot Rods had detailing spray and plenty of snacks for everybody and CW Restorations owner Chris Womack gave everybody a tour of the projects in the shop.

At Pro Designs, Mike and Kristen Filion hosted a barbecue for all comers, keeping a strong smile despite Kristen’s recent Cancer diagnosis that they had kept private (see page 19). Their dedication and enthusiasm for our event really brings to home the importance of the need to support Cancer Research. Check out the photo essay on pages 4 & 5 and mark your calender for January 18, 2014 for the 6th Annual Jeff’s Fun Run.

Pat Ford Goes Bionic! Actually, he is recovering from knee joint replacement

The whole world of F-100 truckin’ owes Pat Ford big time for his commitment to his life-long commitment to the restoration, customization and overall popularity of the F-1 and F-100 trucks. What began as a group of fellow Ford truck friends trekking into the Smokie Mountains for a weekend of classic truck fun at Chimney Rock, NC decades ago soon

grew into the world’s largest gathering of classic Ford trucks. His family stood at the helm of the F-100 Supernationals for more than three decades.

Pat Ford now travels the nation introducing thousands of Ford car and truck enthusiasts to the thousands of OEM stock, reproduction and remanufactured products available from Dennis Carpenter Ford Reproductions. “I am the luckiest man alive to have a job where I get to travel the nation from show to show—and get paid to do it,” stated Pat. Driving thousands of miles during the past few years, walking the dozens of show grounds from end to end and climbing in and out of his trailer loaded five feet high with Carpenter catalogs took its toll, and Pat opted to have surgery to replace a worn out knee.

Pat is on the mend, however, there were complications during surgery and the lower leg bone actually split during the installation of the metal knee joint. Ford barely got to rest from his first visit to the operating room, when he was whisked back for a second surgery the same day! He is able to get around with a walker and has a positive attitude to be back on his feet by this summer.

Pat intends to deliver the Dan Carpenter truck bed and major raffle prizes donated by Dan Carpenter and Dennis Carpenter to this year’s Ford F-100 Western Nationals. And, he is scheduled to be a vendor at the annual Father’s Day Roadster Show at the Pomona Fairgrounds. And Pat will be around the week before the show. Unfortunately, his boss, Dennis Carpenter has a mission that conflicts with our Western Nationals weekend, and he will be back on the road before the show.

He promises to return in 2014 and even reserved the same space. I am sure you will join me in wishing him a speedy recovery from his knee surgery, his positive attitude that he will be on the road and attending the Pomona show and his commitment to deliver our grand prize for this year’s truck show.

Personally, I would trade that bed for the opportunity to hang out with one of my best friends for our special classic Ford truck weekend, but duty calls. Let’s try to make it out to this year’s LA Roadster’s Father’s Day Show and give a big welcome to Pat Ford. It will be good to see him!

I wish there wasn't a Jeff's Fun RunThat is a true statement. I'm sure our members and friends that knew Jeff Hornsby would agree.

Each year, way before the January date of the run, the club pulls together under the organization and control of Chris Travers to produce and conduct the Jeff's Fun Run.

Jeff loved to attend car shows, cruise nights and just bench race with his buddies. His motto was "Let's have some fun!" He was the President of the Orange County Chapter of Pickups Limited since 2006 and he died January 14, 2009. During his presidency there were many changes that increased our membership and got the club out having fun and most important driving our trucks!

Jeff first joined the club in the 70's and loved the club his truck and his buddies. His truck was the most photographed 56 because of its paint job and body mods (no running boards, complete flip frontend), If you own a truck you know that no truck is the same. They are a reflections of their owners.

This is the 5th year of the run and our goal has been simple. Continue this each year to keep Jeff's memory alive and have some fun and to help with the fight against Cancer that took Jeff away from us.

The proceeds from the run are donated towards Cancer research. Last year we donated $1500 towards the cause to The City of Hope.

Each year, a week before the run we get together for breakfast then cruise to the Riverside National Cemetery and visit with Jeff. We leave our mark on his marker from Dash plaques to Cigars to Show Flyers all things that Jeff loved we share with him.

I wish there wasn't a Jeff Fun Run. But since my beloved brother is no longer here with us the Jeffs Fun Run will continue with his message of having fun and driving our hot rods.

Miss youEd

annual tour d’Orange... January 1st...8:30amJanuary 1st 2013 saw the “Tour d’Orange” go down at Orange County Southern California, this was the 10th edition of arguably the first car event of the year. Over 350 cars participated in this casual New Year’s Day tour along two lane roads in the OC finishing at the In-N-Out Burger in the District Shopping Center at Jamboree and Barranca in Irvine. Besides 67 hard core members of Pickups Limited’s Orange County Chapter including Glenn Kerr with navigator Dan Cangro, Bill Crisel, Rich Miller, Chris Travers, Ed & Ellie Oe, and Mike Hay and family on the maiden voyage of his Nash, The event also saw the attendance of several special exotic cars including Ferraris, Mercedes SLS AMG, Audi R8, Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and a Chrome BMW X5 not to mention several 1966 AC Cobras.

Many thanks to all of the photographers that helped with a few of these “action shots”.

christmas season crusingWhat kid wouldn’t like seeing Santa roll up with this rig full of goodies!

This guy was really expecting to sell this “flamed out” 4x4 ‘56 F-100 flatbed on the spot... note the alternate transportation

on the flatbed.

Here is another F-100 that was re-purposed for hauling. Note the alternate transportation in the rear again.

Moving along to Cars & Coffee in Irvine... must be where Santa’s Elves hang out.

One of the newest things in hot rodding is the replica cars from the Gasser era. Brings back great memories of Lions , Orange County International, and Irwindale.

Commercials for the new Fiat 500 Abarth Edition are really cuite, but this car is the real

deal!

Anybody can buy a new Ferrari but it takes real guts to keep a classic truck on the road.

christmas season crusing The latest from Mike Hay’s world

The fit and finish under the hood is remarkable. Ev-erything looks factory installed including the air horns.

“It just needs a bit of tweeking...” is what Mike was saying about his masterpiece. Check out this “QUICK ACCESS” Mike designed himself for his wiring harness. April says the heater really works good though.

As long as I have known Mike Hay, he has been a “Dare to be Different” type of guy. WHo else would bring a Smart Car to a driving event full of Ferraris, Porches, BMW’s and Corvettes. The maiden voyage of his

“new” 302cdi Ford equipted Nash really turned heads at the recent Tour d’Orange

The 10th Annual Hillco Fastener Warehouse Super Cruise was held on Sunday, February 3. A huge crowd of spectators with hot rods to match made this the biggest show in years. This event is the highlight of Hillco’s year because it gives the Hill family the opportunity to meet all of their customers and see your projects in the flesh. Attendance this year was outstanding . . . between 450-500 (including 12-15 F-100’s) cars, bikes, and anything else on wheels, on display. The weather also cooperated with a beautiful, sunny day! A huge thank you was given to Hoist Services, NAPA Auto Parts Garden Grove, Supe-rior Automotive, Guzman Automotive, Darling Bolt, HPS Perfor-

mance Silicone Hoses, C.A.R.S., Inc., Suzette’s Exclusive Hair Salon and OC Car Guy for their donations to the door prize and raffle tables. Combined with the sale of 50-50 tickets, the raffle raised $650 for Orangewood Children’s Foundation of Orange County.

A special thank you to the hard-working Hillco Fastener Warehouse crew for their efforts to ensure everything ran smoothly. They do a great job every year. Jack and Ryan Hill wants to say thanks to everyone who came out and supported this show this year! They say that they are looking forward to Super Cruise #11 in 2014.

Whittier Area Classic Car Show... 2/23Hosted by the Whittier Area Community Church, this second annual event was really an event for the entire community. With about 300 vehicles in attendance, 6 gourmet food trucks, vintage dragsters, live music and plenty of games for the kids, the organizers claim that 12,000 people showed up to check everything out. 5 trucks from the O.C. Chapter were on hand represented by Rudy, Mas & Dianne, Don Story with his friend Big Bill, Bill & Andrea Crisel, and Carlos. The organizers showed us their appreciation by saving a prime parking spot for the F-100’s.

Kristen Swanson Filion9/4/66 - 2/14/13Our good friend Mike Fillion and his son Corey of Pro Design in Santa Ana recently suffered the loss of the love of their lives when Kristen passed away six short weeks after her cancer diagnosis. Kristen was born and raised in Hun-tington Beach, and was a 1985 graduate of Edison High School, she went on to graduate from OCC three years later. She worked for a number of years at Mervyn’s Ad-ams Avenue and when they closed transferred to the Irvine Store. She left Mervyn’s to be the officer manager for her husbands expanding business Pro Design Hot Rods in Santa Ana. She was married 23 years to Mike the love of her life. Kristen loved people and was at her best when at a party or in a group. Just a few short weeks ago she was at Pro Design helping Mike to hose stop #5 for Jeff’s Fun Run. None of us knew that she was so sick as she ran around snapping photos and flipping hot dogs for anybody that came along.

She loved everything to do with the water and enjoyed many happy times at their second home in Lake Havasu. On the annual family vacations she was the “activities director” for 20+ people always thinking up clever things to do. She will be deeply missed by Mike and Corey and the rest of their family and as well as their extended Hot Rod family.

A celebration of Life was held Saturday, Feb. 23 at Calvary Chapel Beachside in Huntington Beach with over 300 people in attendance, many driving the Hot Rods that Mike and his team played a key part in creating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you consider making a contribution to her favorite charity: The ASPCA, or the American Cancer Society .

Check out what Scott has been up toHave you seen the March and April issues of Classic Trucks? Well if not, go out and grab them and check out the great articles by Mike Briggs of BOBCO Auto in Lake Elsinore. These highly detailed articles contain tons of photos and good information on swapping a late model LS Chevrolet engine into a F-100 Panel which just so happens to our own Scott Kastekitz.

Those of us that have had BOBCO do work on our trucks are very familiar with their attention to detail which is right in line with Scott who is always detail oriented in the daily operations of his Irvine based business, Kastle Plumbing (www.kastleplumbing.com)

For more information on these feature articles & project, check out www.bobcoauto.com, www.facebook.combobco56 and www.classictrucks.com/features... or just ask Scott... He’ll tell you all about it.

What To Bring on a Road TripCourtesy of Hot Rod Magazine - October 2012 Issue

The good news at the Hot Rod Power Tour® is that you’ll always have help at the side of the road from other hot rod-ders, many of whom are well prepped for the trip with gear that should really be carried all the time if your old car is a daily driver. In addition to basic hand tools and everything required to change a wheel and tire, here’s some of the stuff we recommend always carrying:

The core essentials: Duct tape, mechanics wire, wire ties, ratchet straps, Vise Grips.

Electrical stuff: Volt/ohm meter, a roll of 14-gauge wire, solderless crimp connectors, electrical tape, wire stripper/crimpers. If your car is new enough that it uses one, bring a code reader.

Fluids: Water, brake fluid, ATF, engine oil, gear lube.

Chemicals: RTV silicone gasket maker, brake cleaner, hand cleaner.

Extras: miscellaneous nuts, bolts, and screws; universal electric fuel pump for carbureted cars; fan belts--at least the one that runs the water pump; rubber fuel line and clamps.

This might the best feeling your truck gets this year. I will be ready to check out your ride at Glenn’s... if I get mine back together before that date. Editor’s Ramblings... it’s just a truck - or the value of a beater ... by Chris Travers Other than being just another “Pretty Face” in the crowd, do you ever wonder what that truck sitting in your garage is really for? We all know what the Ford guys had in mind when they made them but what about today? The internet is full of what might be called “Barn Beaters” and all of the magazines from Hot Rod to Street Rodder, to Classic Trucks have monthly articles on this growing trend in our hobby.

A few weeks ago my lovely wife thought that it would be a good idea to create an extended cover and install some rain gutters on our patio. I went to the local Home Depot in what was once my Home Depot Orange #20 NASCAR prepped F-100 (too bad Joey Logono changed teams to Penske and sponsors to Shell/Penzoil as I’ll need to paint the truck yellow). Anyway, the shopping began for all of the materials I would need.

One problem... everything was 10 or 12 feet long! Last time I checked, the bed on a ‘56 F-100 was 6’6” long. Something had to give. I didn’t want to bash up the metal or scratch that high gloss finish on the wood. What should I do?

So back home I went. I returned to the store with my trusty DeWALT cordless, a handful of deck screws and two scraps of 2x4. I added two long 2x4’s to the materials list and constructed a framework to carry everything. Add some blankets, tie-downs and padding and once again, Barn-yard Technology prevailed. Job done.

Which once again brings up the question... Isn’t it just another truck? Drive it... don’t just look at it!

Give Me A Brake...by Glenn Kerr

What is TPMS then? TPMS is a warning system that warns a vehicle’s operator of an unsafe change in the air pressure in one or more of the tires. Readings are provided by pressure sensing transmitters mounted inside each tire and sent to a central computer (ECU) for display on the dashboard. A warning indicator light on the instrument panel and an audible warning notify the driver if a 25% drop in pressure occurs.

How do I know if my vehicle is equipped with TPMS? Is your truck a little moody sometimes for no obvious reason? Did she complain when you wanted to get her up at 0-dark thirty for a dunut store run on Saturday morning? Did she guzzel all the gas you gave her and ask for more?...Sorry, can’t blame it on TPMS.

In the U.S., if you purchased a car or light duty vehicle under 10,000 lbs, manufactured after September 1, 2007, you have TPMS. If your model was manufac-

tured after October 5, 2005, you may have TPMS. Also, prior to the legislation, some higher-end vehicles also came equipped with TPMS as a premium option. Among other matters, within TREAD Act of 2000, the U.S. federal government mandated the required implementation of TPMS on all new vehicles in the following phased rollout: • 20% of new vehicles from Oct 5, 2005–Aug 31, 2006•70% of new vehicles from Sept 1, 2006–Aug 31, 2007•100% of new vehicles from Sept 1, 2007 and beyond

What exactly does it mean when my TPMS warning light comes on? If the TPMS warning light comes ON and flashes ON for one second and OFF for three seconds, this indi-cates a malfunction with the vehicle’s TPMS system.

TPMS...No It’s Not Something Your Truck Gets Each Month

Page 25: March/April 2013 Newsletter

Hauln’ Freight • march - april 2013 www.pickupslimited.com 25

If the TPMS warning light comes ON and stays ON, take caution. This means that one or more of your tires may have a low-pressure condition. You should carefully slow the vehicle and park in a safe and secure place. You should then inspect all of your tires and check the air pressure. The correct air pressure for your vehicle can be found on the placard, usually located on the inside door panel

Why does tire pressure change? Many factors affect tire pressure including ambient tem-perature changes and tire damage such as punctures. Tire pressure drops about 1 psi for every 10°F drop in ambient temperature. Additionally, tires can lose as much as 1.5 psi per month as air escapes the tire and rim naturally.

What if I have a roadside flat and try to plug the hole using off-the-shelf tire sealant? Any time that a substance other than tire ser-vice center air or nitrogen is introduced into the tire, there is the potential to damage the TPMS sensor in the tire. However, if tire sealant has been used, your local TPMS installer can as-sess the sensor functionality and determine if the sensor is working properly or if it needs to be repaired or replaced.

As always, if you have any questions, please free to call me. And as always, if I don’t know the an-swer or can’t find one, I’ll make one up that sounds plausible.

ABOUT USPickups Limited began in April, 1968 as the result of an ad placed in the Penny Saver. Our Orange County Chapter is the oldest and currently the largest of 7 Chapters found throughout Southern California, with membership limited to 1948-56 F-1 and F-100 pickups and panels. We are an active non-profit organization. Each June we host the largest all Ford truck show in the Western United States, the F-100 Western Nationals while every January we produce Jeff’s Fun Run, a poker run throughout the car culture of LA and Orange Counties. Our business meetings are on the second Thursday of each month at Ken Grody Ford in Buena Park (info below) and we usually plan one group outing each month. Check the flip side of this flyer for a sample of Pickups Limited’s Orange County Chapter events.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS• Where can I buy an F-100? You would be surprised where they show up. Trucks can be found on E-bay, Auto and Truck Trader and in Drive magazine as well as various F-1 & F-100 on-line sites including pickupslimited.com and at many of the local cruise events. You might even find one in your own neighborhood! If you feel adventurous, you can even build a brand new 1956 F-100 from parts that many vendors provide!• Where can I get parts and repairs? Check the flip side for a listing of great vendors that support Pickups Limited.• Can I do repairs myself? Many of us do most of the mechanical tasks ourselves. That’s half the fun. There also are many books available from mechanical to paint and body to interior total restoration.• Do I have to own a truck to join? Yes but it can be a work in progress. The love for the truck is what comes first. If you are looking for a truck, maybe we can help. • Do I have to be a member to participate in Club events? Not at all! Non members are always welcome. But if you do a "Run" in something other than a F-1 or F-100, we might ask you to follow the pack.• How can I get a ride in a F-100? Show up at a meeting or event and ask!• How can I join Pickups Limited? Come to a meeting or one of our events for the first step. There is a basic probationary period required.• Do I need special insurance for such an old vehicle? Not really, it depends on the value of the truck. Many companies will offer premium coverage although there are speciality insurance carriers that can insure your baby for the full stated value.
