President’s Corner

Silver Investor

Hello Chamber Members,

Can you believe it’s already the end of 1st quarter - where does the time go!? Your

Chamber has been busy on multiple fronts.

First, welcome to our new Business Development Director, Dawn Hong. She

brings to us a unique combination of business ownership and non-profit fundraising

experience. We are very confident about her ability to positively impact our membership

numbers. We are excited to have Dawn on our team. I hope you get to meet her very soon.

Second, the Chamber has been diligently advocating two important issues. As you

know, the Chamber strongly supports education and workforce development. The Kent

School District Proposition #1 and Proposition #2 passed by narrow margins. Thank you,

voters of Kent. We are excited that these two propositions have passed so that the children

of Kent have opportunities to learn and develop into the future leaders of our community.

We are also standing in support of the Kent Police Department with Proposition A: Yes for a Safer Kent. The

Chamber has been in close contact with the City of Kent and we are comfortable with the assurances we’ve received that

the money raised from an increased utility tax will not be redirected for any other purpose. The safety of our residents,

employees and property are paramount to the economic growth and prosperity of Kent. Please vote Yes for a Safer

Kent!

I encourage all members to get involved and actively engage with the Chamber. Our positive impact and voice

is stronger together. Also, take advantage of our referral program by encouraging new members to join, too.

Don’t forget to purchase your table, sponsorship or donate a silent auction item for our upcoming President’s

Gala and Business Leadership Awards presented by Republic Services. You don’t want to miss the fun on Friday, May

18th.

The Kent Chamber of Commerce supports the City of Kent Proposition A: Yes for a

Safer Kent. In April 2018 the voters of Kent will have the opportunity to vote to

approve a 2% increase in their utility tax. This tax increase funds additional police

officers and criminal justice services in Kent, and would authorize the city to levy a

2% utility tax increase, from 6% to 8% on electricity, gas and telephone and cable

television utility rates.

The mission of the Kent Police Department is to aggressively fight crime while serving with compassion. Our residents

and businesses deserve the highest quality of service to keep them safe and address quality of life issues.

These funds will be segregated and dedicated exclusively for public safety purposes and accounted for separately from

other city funds. The Chamber, as an organization, has also been assured that money currently going to fund the police

from the general fund will not be supplanted - pulling dollars that have originally been allocated to police to then fund

other areas of City services. It is because of these assurances that the Chamber is comfortable in support of Proposition

A.

Currently the Kent Police Department has the lowest ratio of officers per 1,000 residents as compared to other cities in

the Puget Sound Region. If the voters pass this utility tax increase, we will see additional officers being phased in over

a three year period that will put us at a rate of 1.4 officers per 1,000 residents. This increase in officers will put Kent in

line with Auburn and Federal Way, but still below the officer rates of Seattle, Tacoma and Everett.

The safety of our residents, employees and businesses is incredibly important to the economic growth, vitality and

prosperity of Kent. We urge you to support and vote yes on the City of Kent Proposition A.

A copy of this beautiful book will be

mailed to EVERY BUSINESS in

are also encouraged to display them

You can impact the lives of Kent Middle School students with just a

half day commitment.

On March 28th we will hold our spring 2018 Career Fair at Meeker Middle School. This is a great opportunity to give back to the community and invest in future generations. You will impact over 650 seventh and eighth graders during this half day event. The event will take place at Meeker Middle School (12600 SE 192nd

Street in Renton – Yes, the Kent School District expands into a Renton address) on March 28th from 8:15 AM to 11:10 AM. Your participation will involve (3) thirty minute presentations to 15-30 students on the general information of your work field, as well as the education requirements necessary to pursue that career path. We require that you commit to all 3 rotations. Your presentation should be informative, interactive and fun. Think back to when you were 13 years old, what captivated you? We want this to be an inspiring and engaging morning for the youth. The more interactive you are with the students the better engagement you will have during your presentation. Also, you should be prepared to answer questions on your salary range and history. The kids do not have a filter with regards to asking these sorts of questions and they are very interested in money. Once you sign up, we will be happy to provide some tips for your presentation to make it more engaging for the students. Also, please let us know beforehand about your A/V requirements for the presentations.

Our goal is to expose them to a variety of future career paths. We believe that the earlier students start to prepare for their future the more successful they will be. This career fair will provide the opportunity for the students to start thinking about their long term goals before they begin high school. Please join us, as a presenter, for the Meeker Middle School Career Fair – your half day commitment could influence the entire life of a middle school student.

Thank you to our generous sponsors who make this event possible. Please contact our CEO if you are interested in sponsoring our education programming. You can sponsor

this single event for $250 or all of the education programing for 2018 for $1,000.

Coming in early 2nd quarter!
