Our Reader's Say: Dear Sirs:

Your 8-page New Style DINGHY (no number)arrived this morning and contains some good things... Naturally I was instantly struck by your new cover design. As a DESIGN it's good but I sure don't think it's a hardhitting cover. It's true I was very fond of the former design, which was both nautical in flavor and maybe more important, was good and black so the pub Ii cation would be seen wherever it's distributed. The new design strikes me as a very superior full page advertisement design for an inside page of a large magazine; maybe even a LH page to compete with the more favored RH. But I sure don •t think this is going to leap up from the table or counter and into a reader's consciousness (and hands) I ike your original. If the 11 del rey DIN GHY 11 was printed in color it would perhaps do it--1 'm not good at judging until I see such things. I hope you will go back to the original. I I iked it.

I just want to make sure you understand that I feel you've made a serious mistake, and will go back to the original •••

Fred Hayward Paramount, Cal if.

Ed: We weren't entirely satisfied with our "new look" either, and have been working on it (see present cover). What we are suffering from is growing pains. Two

things seemed to us to make a new cover necessary. One was the increasing content of our Coming Events column, brought on by the growth of activity in Marina del Rey. The other was the need for some way to rapidly self-mail the "Dinghy," bro·ught on by growing interest in it, and a conseqvent growth in the number of paid subscribers (of whom Mr. Hayward was one of our first).

Dear Sirs:

• •• Can you tell me anything about the huge hul I structure being built on Marina Peninsula?

Hal Geyer Mar Vista, Cal if.

Ed: It is a three-masted, 64 1

Barkentine, according to builder Owen Freebairn, and is based on a design which goes back more tho n 100 yea rs.

Dear Sirs:

Enjoyed your story about the Museum at Cabrillo Beach as we wentthere with our children earlier th is summer and found it to be a fascinating place. Our children loved it, and we are planning to take them there again, as there is really almost too much to see in one visit.

FROM THE COAST GUARD

A recent development of the Canadian Coast Guard is a marine distress signal applicable to all small craft in distress and requiring assistanceo The signal has been approved for official recognition by the UoS. Coast Guard and consistsof a rectangular cloth panel, fluorescent orange-red in color, on which a black square and disc are displayed. The signal 11 Square and Disc 11 has been an international distress marine visual signal for many years but is comparatively unknown by small boat operators.

Minimum dimensions of the signals are 7211 long by 4511 wide. The signal is displayed horizontally by securing it across a hatch or cabin top. It can be used at night by shining a lightonit. The Coast Guard is actively encouraging the use of this device as being especially appropriate for the smal I craft operator due to its excellent visibility factor, ease of storage and display, and the fact that it can be made by the individual himself. Tests on this distress signaling system indicated no advantage in increasing the

This idea of learning to sail is relatively new with me. I have not been the kind who has dreamed wistfully of sailing since childhood. In fact, my first sailboat ride was only two years ago, and I remember having a rough time that day just walking out on the . float. lamnoViking.

My instructor is Matt Gordon of Mariner School, here at Marina del Rey. The boat is to be Wesco's beautiful new Coronado 25, but as there isn't one of these available to us yet, Matt wants to begin with a 21' Victory. He says it's better to begin with a smallerboat anyway. I don't know.

My first lesson was a preparatory one. Matt says I must gain confidence in myself--must know that I am in control. He had me start right out on the tiller and in the water. He shoved us off (I was afraid I'd be left alone in the

4

boat), jumped aboard, and qyietly began explaining why we were going in the direction we were. I was petrified.

I think he said we were beating out of the basin into the harbor area. He was all smiles and confidence u and said I was doing fine. My hand was clenched on the · end of the tiller, and Matt pointed out that I could hold the tiller just as competently a few inches back. By this time a slow freeze had come over me. Moving my hand on the tiller took a lot of concentration.

Matt began explaining what he was doing with the jib sheets and about the commands "Ready about, 11 and "Hard a lee. 11 He said he would act on my commands. As we tacked (at terrific speeds), he told me I must get into the habit of moving from lee to win'ard side. The difficulty of doing this made it almost impossible to hold on to the tiller.

I seemed to be having a terrible time getting on a course through the ma in channel. I was constantly tacking, but not get-

tinganywhere. Afterwhat seemed about 60 tacks, I finally got us out of the ma in channel and into the open sea •

The water changed abruptly from relative serenity to what Matt said were moderate swells. He told me to relax. He said: "Look at your wake--there's a beautiful sight." As if I could. I felt if I relaxed even enough to tum my head at this point 6 the whole ocean would be in my lap. Finally, as Matt sat back confidently u watching me, I did flash a glance backward for a second-and we didn •t sink I

I guess unfreezing even this much was passing a critical point. Matt then b~gan talking about sailing techniques in the

open sea. He explained the pieces of yam tied to the shrouds, about luffs in the jib, about watching the swells, why our trim I ittle Victory would not capsize, and how well her rigging was placed for easy access. He told me not to try to hear or learn everything this first time out (as if I could),

MORE ABOUT TlDEPOOL EXPLORATION {Continuation of "Tidepool Exploration 11

- Issue 1120, June 11-24, 1965)

For entertaining children and adults alike, few pursuits offer more fascinating fun than tidepool collecting. Equipment needed is I ittle more than a plastic container, a screwdriver and a curious mind.

Among specimens to be found at low tide in local waters are:

HERMIT CRAB Any shell that moves rapidly

in- the tide pool contains a hermit crab and is not the true animal. Take two or three hermit crabs and gently twistthemoutof their temporary shells. Place one empty shell and three herm-it crabs in a tide pool. Then watch the biggest fight you have ever seen in your life, as they scramble, tug and push each other to try to get into the one shell. YesJ they are good to eat. The Chinese value them as a delicacy in oriental soup.

SCALLOPS or PECTENS Lift the kelp up in the tide

pool and look carefully on the leaves. In the springtime you should find some scallops. Pluck them off and put them in the water

filled container. Notice a row of beautiful blue eyes as they open up to look around. Watch them swim around by clapping their shells together. Then they probably will jump right out of the container, kick up and down the rock, flip back into the tide pool and rapidly swim away. Next time you order fried scallops in a restaurant, remember that the little animal of this experiment is the kind you are eating. ABALONE, LIMPETS and OTHER SHELLS

Gently pry these animals from the rocks and tum them upside down in the tide pool. You will be amazed attheiragility beneath a rock. Place a small abalone in a plastic jar. Scrape some algae from a rock, then observe the abalone feeding on the algae with its lawn mower teeth. It is ago inst the law to take these small abalone. Be sure to replace them. GOOSE NECK BARNACLE

Pry a barnacle off the rocks and place it in a container. Notice how the barnacle stands on its

PRESERVING MARINE ANIMALS

/lkJny people-divers, fishermen, even children find themselves wanting to preserve some species of sea animal but aren't aware of the steps involved. The method is easy-and extremely rewarding.

Formaldehyde is one of the best general preservatives for marine animals, unless they have calcareous plates, in which case the formaldehyde may eat away the calcareous structures. Ten per cent formal in is the best general preservative. It is made by 6 . .

using 9 parts of water to 1 part of commercial formaldehyde, which can be purchased in any drugstore. Do NOT mix on the basis of the percentages given on the bottle since this is a saturated solution and therefore is 100 per cent forma I in. For sma II, softbodied animals a 5 per cent solution is often satisfactory {19 parts water to· 1 part formaldehyde). The acidic action of this solution can be buffered by the addition of a small amount of borax to the mixture {about half a teaspoonful per quart).

head, opens its mouth and kicks food into its mouth with the bottom of its feet. Remember the barnacle is a cousin to the crab and the lobster.

Learning to Sail

--Continued

but just to relax and notice the different sounds as our boat was beating or reaching.

I mentioned that as a child I had thought sailboats couldonly sail in the direction the wind was blowing. Matt explained about the jib acting as an airfoil, and how the wind was really pulling us.

Coming back into the channel, Matt rigged the boat to sail wing and wing. Back in the calm harbor, after the open sea II I began to gain confidence. I sailed past the Del Rey Yacht Club. I had heard of the 11 Duchess 11 which

belongs to Duke Moina rand which has had a colorful past as a prisoner transport. I wanted to take a look at her, and there she was. My first view of her--froma sailboat in the water, and me at the tiller! I began to feel pretty good, but my arm was killing me.

As we headed back to the dock at Playa del Rey Marine Supply, it came as no surprise when Matt told me that I would sa ii her in.

lstill don 1t quite understand about leeward and windward docks, but he said Mariner School has the best kind.

Matt was on the bow and whatever I was doing was not quite right, so he motioned me to try again. I came about and suddenly I was in irons11 fetching just right, and the dock came sliding up. Matt jumped off and made us fast. I realized then that I was exhausted. But we were back after 2-1/2 hours 11 and all in one piece. I think sailing is going to be fun I
