DESIGN – CREATE FEATURES AND INCORPORATE PRACTICAL ELEMENTS

/ The Climate Powder Coating is a very tough, mark and abrasion resistant powder coating that will reduce the levels of wear and maintenance of wall linings./ Factory applied consistent powder coated surface for an even finish./ The baked on powder coating forms a continuous film that protects the substrate from water splashes, steam and moisture./ The non porous yet breathable surface helps reduce the growth of mould and mildew./ Finishboard is backed by a 10 year Manufacturer’s Limited Warranty.

/ An economic alternative to high end pre-finished products./ Available in any colour or choose from the stock range./ Metallic or two tone blended finishes create stunning feature interiors./ Create features from the jointing systems and combine multiple colours and varied layouts for maximum impact.

Other sizes and colours available to order, minimum order quantities apply.

COST AND VALUE

Factory finishing is the most efficient means of adding protection and colour to substrates. This creates significant cost benefits for all parties.

/ Time Value: reduce interest payments on capital, lost client earnings during a new build or refit and late penalty charges./ Disruption: less trades, less plaster dust and paint fumes means occupants can continue operating and less is spent on isolation or control systems and less on daily cleaning bills./ Fewer call backs: quality issues associated with finishing trades often compounded with skilled labour shortages.

THE BENEFITS OF USING FINISHBOARD

Finishboard is a one-step installation process. Since panels are pre-finished, there is no stopping and sanding plasterboard joints or priming, painting and/or applying wall covering. Projects can be completed up to 40% faster versus traditionally finished plasterboard projects.

FAST INSTALLATION

FINISHBOARD MATERIAL

The substrate used in the production of Finishboard is a square edged plasterboard panel. These panels are powder coated (in a variety of colours and finishes) by Climate Coatings Limited.

Finishboard has a powder coating to the finished face of the plasterboard only. It cannot have a finish to both sides. The finished face is protected by a removable plastic film.

ABRASION RESISTANCE

STAIN AND CHEMICAL RESISTANCE

/ Finishboard panels should be separated from fuel burning appliances, flues and chimneys.

/ Finishboard panels should not be subjected to temperatures exceeding 52 degrees Celsius for a prolonged period.

Testing was carried out in line with AS/NZS 1580.403.2: Abrasion Resistance – Taber Abraser Abrasion Resistance Tests were carried out on Finishboard test samples and control samples of a leading brand of waterborne enamel paint.

The test results demonstrate that Finishboard has excellent abrasion resistance and has substantially better abrasion resistance than the waterborne enamel paint samples tested.

The following table applies to all products and is the determination of resistance of factory applied coatings on wood products to stain and reagents to - ASTM D3023.

Test reports are available from your local Finishboard Distributor upon request.

ABRASION RESISTANCE RESULTS SUMMARY

“The control samples (waterborne enamel paint) were found to wear faster than the test samples (Finishboard). All control coating samples (waterborne enamel paint) were abraded to the substrate at 1000 cycles”.

NB: The Finishboard test samples did not abrade through to the substrate after 1000 cycles.

What this means: The Finishboard powder coat finish has excellent resistance to abrasive activities, providing a durable finish that will assist to protect the plasterboard substrate, ensure serviceability of the finish and maintain its original appearance for longer. The abrasive resistant characteristics of Finishboard make it an ideal lining for high wear environments.

BGC Stud Adhesive, 25mm dia. x 15mm high, are positioned in the pattern above. It is recommended to install ceilings as per the 1/3 spacing method.

Finishboards are placed at right angles to the ceiling joists, battens or furring channels and supported along each edge with aluminum jointers.

Next press the sheets firmly against the framing and fix two screws as per the 1/3 spacing method along the centre of the sheet at each framing member.

Fasteners must not coincide with BGC Stud Adhesive daubs, and fasteners should be kept to a minimum distance of 200mm from BGC Stud Adhesive daubs.

Allow at least 24 hours or 48 hours in slow drying weather, for the BGC Stud Adhesive to cure prior to any services or fixtures, applied to Finishboard.

Apply a pre finished colour self adhesive patch over fastener head.

DESIGN AND INSTALLATION

Noggins should be evenly spaced at a maximum of 1350mm centres.

Option 1: No double sided tape, mechanical fixing to top and bottom of sheets. Use adhesive only as per instructions and fix sheets off at top and bottom edges, 12mm inset at 200mm spacings. Conceal fixings with specified trim.

Option 2: Prior to starting, plan the panel layout. Wherever possible, vertical cut on panels should be used in external or internal corners. Apply double sided tape and adhesive to all studs.

Do not allow adhesive to come in contact with double sided tape. Adhesive must not enter the join line between panels.

Double sided tape film must only be removed immediately prior to fitting panels. The application of double sided tape is primarily to avoid the need to brace panels while adhesive cures.

Panels must be installed with a 5-10mm gap between the bottom edge and the floor. Panels must be installed with edges just touching. Do not tighten the gap with force. The lack of tightness in the gap will allow for fitting of jointers.

Once panel is fitted, draw back protective film from top and bottom then install screws and apply pressure over studs and noggins.

NEGATIVE DETAILS

To achieve this method it may be necessary to fit additional vertical noggins.

If the installation is planned in such a way that all vertical cut panels are in corners and no vertical cuts are at ‘panel to panel’ joints then H jointers may be omitted which leaves a satisfactory butt join effect.

Gaps may be left in panel to panel joints to create a ‘negative detail’. Using black coloured double sided tape will enhance this effect. Alternatively use the Negative Detail Joint available as shown.

Gaps may also be silicone filled in a matching colour or a contrasting colour for a striking effect.

ALTERNATIVE SYSTEMS

Other than the standard installation method, Finishboard panels may be adapted to suit existing or specific installation processes i.e.

/ Horizontal applications, particularly above dados./ Incorporation into demountable and commercial partitioning systems./ Wardrobe doors, toilet partitions and work stations.

CUTTING

The process for cutting and penetrating Finishboard is identical to that used for standard plasterboard.

Plasterboard sheets may bend or snap under their own weight. Handle sheets carefully and make sure they are properly supported prior to scoring.

Place the panel with the coated coloured face side up. Accurately measure and mark the sheet using a soft pencil to the size required.

Line a straight edge up with the marks and hold firmly against the sheet. Draw a pencil line as a guide for scoring. Score through coating and paper and lightly into the core using a drywall or craft knife.

/ Support the main section of the sheet close to the scored line./ Snap the core by pressing downward sharply on overhang./ Support the cutoff with other hand./ Score the backing paper and snap the cutoff upward.

For stepped areas, it is necessary to cut the short cuts with a hand saw.

PENETRATIONS

For openings such as electrical outlets use the following method.

/ Measure from where the side of the panel will be located to the near and far sides of the fitting and mark the panel.

/ Measure from floor to top and bottom of fitting and mark panel.

/ Trace the outline of the fitting on the panel, drill holes in the corners and cut with a keyhole saw.

/ Do not use a hammer to create the opening.

As leaks and water ingress typically occur at junctions between building elements and at penetrations, it is essential that particular attention is given to these details at the time of installation. Lack of attention to detail can result in water damage that could remain undetected for a long time.

/ Ensure that all cut-outs for pipe penetrations are made neatly, and slightly oversize, with a hole saw. These penetrations should be of a diameter no more than 12mm greater than that of the pipe.

/ Sealants should be of a mould inhibiting type and be neutral cure. Neutral cure silicones will generally meet these requirements.

/ Surfaces should be dry and free from dust before application, a minimum of a 4mm joint width provided and the depth should not exceed the width.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

The colour vibrancy and unique finish of Finishboard is complemented by its easy to clean surface. Unlike a painted surface, the hard Finishboard surface with built in anti-stick additives, will not harbour the same amount of dust and grime and can be readily cleaned without effecting the surface appearance. With proper care, the surface will retain its appearance and performance characteristics for years to come.

EVERYDAY CLEANING

STUBBORN STAINS AND MARKS

Clean the surface by wiping with a damp cloth which has been soaked and wrung out in a diluted solution of mild liquid detergent mixed in tepid water. Remove any moisture remaining after cleaning with a dry clean cloth.

Note: Independent Resistance to Washing Test results demonstrate that the Finishboard surface has excellent resistance to cleaning using soapy water.

When the ‘everyday cleaning’ method does not work for stubborn marks, stains or grime build up, use a mild general purpose household cleaner. When using appropriate household ‘spray and wipe’ type cleaners, spray the cleaning agent so that a wide spread of mist is dispersed onto the surface. Wipe the surface clean immediately. Test the cleaner on the Finishboard surface on a hidden area, or off cut, prior to use.

Ensure to refer to the cleaning products instructions prior to use, avoid using the cleaner or test in an inconspicuous area first, if the instructions caution against use of the product on paint, varnish, plastic or lacquered surfaces.

Warning: Do not spray cleaning agents in concentrated amounts onto the surface or leave the cleaning agent on the surface for any period of time, as this could stain or damage the surface.

Do not use harsh solvents such as paint thinners, petrol, MEK, toluene and other active or oxygenated organic solvents.

Do not use cleaning liquids, abrasive cleaners and abrasive materials that may scratch and damage the coating, such as:

/ Cleaners: Jif, Ajax, Brasso, Mr. Muscle Oven Cleaner, Windex, Drain Cleaners, CLR (Calcium, Lime, Rust Remover), Harpic Toilet Duck, Caustic based oven cleaners, Sugar Soap or Bleach in any concentration./ Abrasives: Sand Paper, Steel Wool, Scouring Pads.

Finishboard is factory finished and does not require painting. However, if desired, Finishboard can be painted over as follows:

/ Clean the surface thoroughly with warm soapy water. If surface has been damaged and is chipped or flaking in areas, lightly scuff or sand surface with fine grit sand paper to remove any loose coating./ Lightly scuff the surface with a 350 grit sand paper just enough to abrade the surface. Clean off residual dust with a clean cloth./ Apply two coats of good quality interior acrylic latex paint as per paint manufacturer’s recommendations. An interior quick dry acrylic primer may assist top coat adhesion and application.

Should damage occur during any stage of installation or while installed, touch up paints are available that can be used to spot repair the affected area. If the surface is deeply indented or gouged through to the gypsum core, then clear, clean and fill the effected area using standard construction filler suitable for use with plasterboard, as per filler product instructions. Sand the filled area, ensuring to feather out the area where the filler meets the existing coated surface to ensure a clean seamless joint. Ensure the filler is smooth, blemish free and flat. Spray paint following the instructions on the aerosol can.

Touch up paint is available from your Finishboard distributor.

The finished appearance of the repaired area will primarily be determined by the quality of workmanship, however subtle gloss and colour variation will be evident between the paint finish and the Finishboard powder coated finish.

For minor ‘touch ups’ to scratches or dents that do not require filling, apply colour matched paint using the dab sticks.

If the Standard Method of installation has been used, then a damaged panel may be replaced.

If trim and jointers have been fitted then it will be necessary to carefully remove jointers, cut out sections of trim, then replace panel as above, finally reinstating trim and jointers.

Under normal conditions of use Finishboard presents no known health hazards.

Powder coating is a VOC free 100% solid paint process, therefore providing a lining that may contribute to Green Star Credits.

The Finishboard finish is a 100% solid powder coating; no solvents are used in the powder or process. This means that it contains zero Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s). Therefore using Finishboard instead of solvent and/or waterborne paints containing VOC’s reduces the environmental impact of VOC’s.

Finishboard requires no on site stopping or painting, therefore when used as an alternative material to painted plasterboard it will help reduce interior VOC emissions.

Finishboard waste material will be accepted in most landfills. If in doubt, check with the Local Authority.

Waste powder is minimized during the coating process through the use of a cyclonic collection system that enables good powder to be recycled for further use. Up to 95% of raw powder paint material is reusable during production. Any waste powder is hardened and deemed fit for land fill. No solvents or water is used in the powder coating process.
