Behind the mask is a formal exploration for a residence for an outsider actor. The project is derived from the masking and layering of the plans of Antonio Gaudis Casa Ballto and Peter Corrigans Myer House as well as drawing on the nature of old Hollywood glamour think Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard I am big. Its the pictures that got small

The narrative journey of the house is derived from the process of the un-masking for the actor from the stage to the bedroom. Entering in through the gap between the walls, the space opens to reveal a stage, naturally lit by an open

void showing the main entry up the staircase at the far end of the stage, making the progress from the stage to the backstage.

The void works as a means to centre the focus of the house from the outside to the inside, which is further expressed by the nature of the materiality and the thickness of the walls at they morph from an ephemeral quality in the

centre of the void, to the thick, multi-layered white washed exterior brick walls. This is a house that celebrates the eccentric but allows itself to exist in the conventional, an eclectic oasis working as a terrace house in suburbia.

Rosebud was a town that was founded on this idea of holiday, it was a place of which people would visit to escape the city and its suburbs for a more natural romantic setting of the beach. Between 1930 to 1940 the rosebud campsite was a tranquil, family friendly community of holidaymakers which grew steadily each year. At the end of world war 1 the campsites popularity exploded with a camping committee and administration being set up and a waiting list implicated.

With the growth of the campsite, the town of Rosebud also saw a major growth in the 1960s with the desire of people to permanently move from the city for a more relaxed beach side life. However with the growth of the area the town of rosebud began to turn from a beach site retreat into an extension of Melbournes southern suburbs. The essence of the beach now hidden behind the roar of semi trailers along neapen highway and foreshore private apartments that block any view of the crystal waters.

The main idea for the aquatic centre, memorial and library is the re appropriation of the Rosebud campsite, in particular the romantic idea of the 1930-1940s rosebud to create not just the volumes but also an area that can be used and engaged with by the rosebud citizens. The programmatic make up of the three volumes; the aquatic centre, memorial hall and library exhibit very different uses of which minimal overlap.

A prominent feature in the campsite and along the peninsula coast is the native costal tea tree. Using this motif of a forest the idea of a canopy that draped the entire site was formed, connecting all three volumes together through a central inside/outside area, reminiscent of the campsite with separate identities within a larger scheme. The surface the canopy not only serves as a shelter and roof but also works as a water collection service for the aquatic centre and toilets throughout the site.

The canopy creeps out over the surrounding streets of rosebud pde and ninth ave inviting people inside. The existing wannanue place has been converted to foot and bike traffic only, creating a clear connection to point neapen through the laneway and pulling the public space of the highway footpath back into the site. The structure under the canopy works on the branching of the tea tree. The white painted steel an ode to the sporting works of Phillip Cox.

The designs of each of the programmatic volumes are appropriated from an Arthur Boyd print the swimmer which was produced in 1993. Between 1937-1939 Boyd spent three years of his adolescence living with his grandfather down in rosebud during which he painted a series of painting of his surroundings, a reflection of romantic rosebud. Though the swimmer was produced nearly 55 years later, it has been attributed to his time spent in rosebud and provides a more abstract reflection of the area.

The elements of the painting were extracted and the areas formed by the strokes of the paintings were then assessed and altered to fit in the specific program of the volumes. The painting was also translated onto the canopy, using the pattern created to provide openings and glass roofs. The pattern of the tea tree was then used to build a language for the large glass walls within the volumes as like a forest creating the lightness of the internal structure holding up a larger canopy. The pattern provides a framing system of the window that provides this idea of filtered light through a forest. The solid walls were applied with a rendered treatment, indicative of thick paint knife method in the rosebud paintings by Boyd to create a texture you can feel and play with.

The artist is present involves the design for an artist residence in Beeac (A small country town located just outside of Colac) with emphasis on the use of a specific material.

    The scheme of the site is grounded heavily in the landscape by using the architecture as a series of "pavilions" that capture the site and the greater context of Beeac. With each pavilion focusing on an existing artefact with in the current landscape; a milking shed, a water tower, a bridge and a dam. Interpreting the works of performance artist, Marina Abramovi, the architecture works to emulate the role of artist by evoking of a specific emotion or action from the visitor;

The Entry: Inspired by "Imponderabilia"(1977), presents a thin sunken passageway in which one must turn to the side to pass through. The direction of which one turns dictates the way that they experience the site.

The House: Inspired by "The House with the Ocean View" (2002), deals with the existence of two separate identities within an intimate space like a house. The milk shed is split into two halves, with a central external corridor that is lined with the plumbing pipes of the house. The two halves are connected in the centre of the corridor, creating a meting point for the two circulations and the secondary point of awareness for the visitor and the first for the artist.

The Public Toilet: Inspired by "Rest Energy" (1980), works on using the typology of the toilet and the idea of tension present in her work. The point of fragility is presented by the presence of a small window in each of the toilet cubicles which opens up to the bridge walkway above. The user of the toilet is aware of the people on the bridge; however the walkers are not immediately aware of those in the toilet. The moment of tension is experienced by the people of the toilet wishing that those above do not look down through the window to see them.

The Bridge: Inspired by "The Great Wall Walk" (1988), embodies the notion of experiencing and understanding something then having to say goodbye. The bridge operates as a vehicle for this experience, twisting over the lake and back through , giving the visitor a good look at the site and what they may have missed. However, like the separation of the Marina and her partner at the end of the walk, the visitor is pushed out of the site, unable to return back on the bridge despite their new found understanding.

The overarching theme of the plan draws on Marina's most famous work, "The Artist is Present" (2010), but through the use of the existing architecture of the area, pulls her work into a Beeac context. Causing the Artist to truly be present in Beeac.

The area and space of the set in affected by the size of the lense

The house of scene explores the idea of memory within architecture and the

nature in which we in the digital age consume architecture. Often we view

architecture through an iconic singular image, and that becomes the part of

    the building that we remember.

The big idea of this house was the focus on the one perfect image of a

space in regards to our spatial memory and the hyperbole of design, in only

designing the view that would be seen within a specific space.

Using the standard angle of site and pre-existing model, the two

typologies of the house were divided. One presented as the resolved

"photographed" design and the other serving merely as a structural support

    for the ideal image.

The house of monument looks at the way non-architectural educated people look at a domestic space. I asked a couple to draw a designed space for each other in plan then I asked them to re-draw the same space every two days without looking at the drawings before it.

The research lead me to two major conclusions:

Elements like walls, doors and simple windows, were of low priority as the location, size and even presence of them changed drastically drawing to drawing. The only constant was if the person had drawn a specific type of window, such as a bay window, which was attached to an action, such as a couch looking out a window.

Elements like stairs, couches, fireplaces and specific windows were remember accurately. Items that were attached with meaning and action; a writing nook, a tv couch, were constantly redrawn, often with more emphasis than the previous drawing.

This idea of memory of specific things, or monuments inspired the design of this hypothetical house, the house of monument. This project looks at the home as a gallery of items and artefacts that have meaning attached to them individually as a means of documenting what is really important and memorable to people within a space.

This Sanatorium/Wellness centre was designed alongside a Club House and hotel and dealt with the relationship between an immature god and a wise Lucifer. The Sanatorium operated using the troupe of Lucifer as a self-contained and resourceful being, who didn't need to rely on anyone else.

The relationships between the two buildings were focused on the idea of transition; where the Club house (God) was the point of creation, the Sanatorium worked on the subtraction. The removal from the sanatorium was what allowed the Club house to create.

The main motif for this was the idea of water, more the absence of it as a means of symbolising loss. Taking typical water holding architecture such as a pool, a gutter, a bridge and voiding them of water works in creating this idea of absence and loss. These spaces are then reappropriated in useable spaces such as a reading room ect.

The design also deals with a realistic approach to planning, ensuring that despite the large floor plate of the design there is no extremely long circulation. The plate is then further broken up by the placement of gardens which not only allows plenty of natural light in to the building but also work as a connection point for the "water" circulation.

  • GENERATIVE MODELING

Through the use of Anemone the recursive pattern was overlayed over the Arts Centre, combining with previous

itteration tools like attractor points and points on mesh.

Basic use of points over mesh

Basic use of points over mesh with increased number of points

Increased points and increted size of input geometry

Increased points and increted size of input geometry with use of attractor points placed at

    the top of spire
