“Because Sometimes You Need a Hand” is more than a slogan at Marisa Home Care; it’s a philoso-

phy that guides its staff to approach each cli-ent with understanding, professionalism, and a can-do attitude that inspires confidence in clients and their families.

“We think of it as ‘Just Ask’ care,” said founder and co-owner Marsha Goldsmith Kamin, who describes the company as a “boutique style” care provider, where the commitment to providing comfort and quality care goes beyond the limitations of typical home care services.

Clients can choose from a wide variety of services and types of care, from temporary help for those who are hospitalized or recovering from surgery or injury, to those who require more intensive long-term care. The staff at Marisa Home Care includes a range of trained caregivers, including registered nurses (RNs), licensed professional nurses (LPNs), gerontologists and aides, who provide everything from skilled nursing care for bedridden patients to monthly trips to Costco for seniors who need an extra pair of hands.

“We’re incredibly flexible,” Goldsmith Kamin said. “It’s not ‘home care in a box’. We’re not a franchise; we’re a local company whose principals have years of experience and deep roots in the community.”

For 20 years, Goldsmith Kamin served as executive director of Jewish Senior Life, an organization with a $20 million budget, a staff of more than 200 employees and a client base of 1,800 in eight residential buildings throughout Metro Detroit. Her partner and co-owner is Christopher Corbett, president of Davis-Smith, which has specialized in staffing for the Michigan medical community for more than 60 years. Care Manager Suzy Mulka, who brings a wealth of experience to Marisa Home Care, is ranked among the top 10 geriatric case managers in Metro Detroit on LinkedIn; and Operations Manager Sarah Harris, a dedicated social worker who also has an MBA, has spent years helping children, adults and seniors through a variety of challenges.

“We’re very creative in coming up with solutions and answers for families,” said Goldsmith Kamin. “If a situation requires something that hasn’t been done before, our attitude is, why not? We’re always willing to try new things.”

Since its inception, Marisa Home Care has served hundreds of clients throughout Metro Detroit and beyond. Last year, the company won the 2014 Honorable Mensch-ion in the “Best of Home Care” category in the annual Detroit Jewish News “Best of Michigan” contest.

ADVOCATING FOR PATIENTSThe Marisa staff has recently launched an exciting new program called CareWise, under the guidance of Care Manager Suzy Mulka. Because the medical system can be complex and overwhelming, CareWise provides professional care managers, who use their expertise to serve as patient advocates, oversee care plans, evaluate options, and coordinate logistics, including supplies and equipment.

CareWise managers offer support to family members as well, whether they are local or long-distance, providing peace of mind and enabling family members to spend more quality time with their loved ones.

Kamin and her staff understand how important it is to clients and their families to have peace of mind when bringing a

caregiver into their home. While some home care providers use a “hit-or-miss” approach, Marisa Home Care uses a methodical approach called “Care Compatibility” to ensure a harmonious fit between caregiver and client.

Many different characteristics are evaluated, including whether an individual is talkative or quiet, attitudes toward pets, allergies and other traits. All staff members are bonded and insured.

“We don’t place staff members with a client unless we would want them caring for our own family members,” said Goldsmith Kamin.

LIMITLESS SERVICESThe services that Marisa Home Care staff members can provide are as individual as the clients who request them. Besides basic services such as assistance with meals, bathing, dressing and medication, or transportation to medical appointments,

Marisa caregivers will accompany families or individuals on vacations, take an older adult to synagogue or a night at the theater, or help out with holiday shopping or decorating.

Everything is done with an eye toward the health, safety and well-being of the client. In every situation, Marisa’s trained caregivers are watching for safety hazards and other aspects of the client’s lifestyle.
