The team pauses for a 5 minute break duringtheir trail hike up the Sawmill Creek, off the

Potomac River.Cadets employed techniquesderived from both classroom and field traininginstruction such as: map reading and terrainassociation, hazard avoidance, crossing tech-

    niques and team bonding.

The Martinsburg Composite Squadron held aground search and rescue training event Mar. 16

-17, at the Manidokan Camp and Retreat Center,Knoxville MD. This event marks a new begin-ning for Martinsburgs ground search and rescue

capability, which was dormant for many years.

The GTM3 training by senior members of theSquadron, combined with their real world ex-

pertise, added realism to the tasks that werebeing trained. Combined with the enthusiasmprovided by the cadets, the event was a greatsuccess. The training involved cadet GTM3

trainees: C/1Lt Tim Dye, C/Amn Kendall Bar-rett, C/Amn John Garlitz, C/TSgt Kenneth May,C/A1C Toni May, and C/Amn AngelWebb. Senior members Dennis and FrancesWebb assisted 1Lt. Gary May. For the cadets,

this training provided many new experienc-es. For others, this was their first time camping, eating Meals Ready to Eat (MREs)(discovering they really dont like them), sitting

around a camp fire looking up at the stars and

    learning in an outdoor environment.

Trainees are required to demonstrate proficiency

in search and rescue techniques in order to ob-tain the Ground Team Member qualification, making them eligible to assist in actual searchand rescue missions. The focus of this field

training event was line searches and clues iden-tification. The trainees were instructed in the

use of scanning techniques while on foot, mov-ing as part of a search line, search line commu-nications, whistle signals, attraction techniques,

identify aircraft and mission person searchclues.

TARC Team's 'Red-Tail' is ready for the last flight of the

In an effort to encourage students to studymath and science and to consider related

careers, the Aerospace Industries Associa-tion (AIA) and the National Association ofRocketry (NAR) created the worlds larg-est model rocket design and launch contest,

    the Team America Rocketry Challenge

(TARC). Approximately 7,000 studentsfrom across the nation compete in TARCeach year. Teams design, build and fly a

model rocket that reaches a specific alti-tude and duration determined by a set ofrules developed each year.

The challenge for 2012 is to design a rock-et weighing 650 grams or less that cancarry two large grade A eggs to an altitude

of 800-ft and return them to the ground byuse of a parachute in 43-47 seconds with-

    out breaking the eggs.

    Martinsburg Composite Squadrons Team

#13585 started work on their rocket designin December and made their first practiceflights at Great Meadow, VA on Saturday,February 12th. The Martinsburg Squad-

rons team is one of 669 teams across thenation. The team consisting of C/SrA Den-ver Brenizer, C/SSgt Casey Densmore,C/Amn Nicolas Heredia, C/Amn Chase

Kelvington, C/TSgt Kenneth May, andC/SrA Duncan Smith I lead by C/1st Lt TimDye. The teams NAR mentor is 2d LtFrank Panek.

The TARC Team made a second trip to

Great Meadow on St Patricks Day and didan outstanding job of tweaking the rocketdesign to meet the flight objectives. On the

third flight of the day the Team flew therocket to 795 feet and scored a 7.5 which isabout as good as they come. However, ontaking the egg out and handing it off to the

judge it cracked resulting in a disqualifica-tion. The Team will make its last qualify-ing flight attempt on the weekend of March31st. Regardless of the outcome, the Team

should be proud of its accomplishments.
