EICS conducts a Mission Radio Operator course

The use of radio communications is a critical component of CAP

members training as they are authorized to operate CAP radio

stations upon certification by wing or higher authority to perform the

Emergency Services missions. As part of this training, the EICS

conducted a Mission Radio Operator (MRO) qualifications training to

prepare members to use perform radio communications during

missions.

Members of the EICS supported the Red Cross BigBash

Like every year, seniors and cadets supported the Red Cross Big

Bash fundraiser taking care of the parking lot traffic and access

control in coordination with the DHS representative.

Urban Directional Finding (UDF) Teams training

The Civil Air Patrol Emergency Services missions are conducted by

skilled members that undergo training and become qualified in

different areas. Members of the EICS conducted during this year a

UDF team training. During this training, members learn and exercise

techniques that will allow them to search and locate downed aircraft

and other missions that could save the life of a pilot.

TERMINATION OF SATELLITE MONITORING OF121.5 MHZ, ARE YOU READY?

On 1 February 2009 , the International Cospas-Sarsat Organizationterminated processing of distress signals emitted by 121.5 MHzEmergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs).

Cospas-Sarsat System ( U.S. included) will continue processingemergency signals transmitted by 406 MHz ELTs. These 5 Wattdigital beacons transmit a much stronger signal, are more accurate, verifiable and traceable to the registered beacon owner (406 MHz ELTs must be registered by the owner in accordance with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulation at

www.beaconregistration .noaa.gov ). Registration allows the searchand rescue authorities to contact the beacon owner, or his or herdesignated alternate by telephone to determine if a real emergencyexists. Therefore, a simple telephone call often solves a 406 MHzalerts without launching costly and limited search and rescueresources, which would have to be done for a 121.5 MHz alert. Forthese reasons, the search and rescue community is encouragingaircraft owners to consider retrofit of 406 MHz ELTs or at a minimum, consider the purchase of a handheld 406 MHz Personal LocatorBeacon ( PLB ) which can be carried in the cockpit while continuingto maintain a fixed 121.5 MHz ELT mounted in the aircraft's tail.Protect yourself and your passengers and Get the Fix… Switch to406.

Pilots flying aircraft equipped with 121.5 MHz ELTs will have todepend on pilots of over flying aircraft or ground stations monitoring121.5 to hear and report distress alert signals, transmitted from apossible crash site.
