From the Deputy Commander . . .Capt Jessa Erickson

I had a lot of time over my 3-day

weekend to reflect on how busy

     August was...

Our first cadet to attend an

    NCSA (he actually attended

    2!)

    Front seat o-rides for cadets

    Brasher, Mood & Pelzer

    Back seat o-rides for cadets

    Murphy, Bean, Hohenberger

    and Baker

    Pilot check rides for SMs

    Johnson, Dimon & Murphy

    SM Johnson completed Of-

    ficer Basic Course

    THREE senior members

    completed the Yeager exam

    SM Josh Hansen promoted

    to 2d Lt

    Cadets Pelzer, Hohenberger

    and Hansen all promoted

Now I look to September and

wonder how we can surpass our

    many accomplishments because,

as you all know, we always strive

    to do better!

     As the summer time activities

    slowly wind down, September

looks forward to the Youth Avia-

tion Day Camp and Fly Iowa

    2012 in Atlantic, North Central

    Region Conference in Des

Moines and the SE Iowa Airshow

in Burlington. Not only that, but

two cadets are already set to

promote once their time in grade

(TIG) is up, and several other

cadets are in prime position to be

able to promote as well. As we

begin a new year of qualification

for the Quality Cadet Unit Award

we also look forward to schedul-

    ing DDRx and AEX activities.

    Thinking a little farther ahead

    now….

October will see the Iowa Wing

    Conference at Camp Dodge in

    Des Moines. The conference

    planning committee is hard at

    work (I speak from experience!)

    planning great sessions and a

    wonderful celebration of ALL

    Iowa’s many achievements d

ing the past year. Yours truly

be there, as will your squadro

    commander who will be servi

as MC. If you haven’t registe

to go yet please do, we’d love

    have a strong squadron pres-

    ence!

    Wreaths Across America is in

swing and we’ll be ramping u

    our sponsorship efforts, both

vidually and as a squadron, a

we prepare to attend the annu

    wreath laying ceremony in De

to coincide with the 3rd Saturday meeting .

October is fast approaching and plans are being

finalized to make it a great experience for all senior

Thoughts from your First Sergeant . . .

    /SMSgt Luke Hohenberger

    n August 9, 2012 I went to my

ery first Civil Air Patrol Meeting.

    here were only three cadets

    ere counting myself, and now

ne year later, there are twelveadets and more interested! That

a very large growth in one

ear! Since we have more cadets

at means there are more oppor-

nities. For example, we had a

    adet transfer from Georgia that

as experience in color guard. So

    new opportunity would be that

e could start a color guard. An-

    ther good opportunity when you

et a great amount of cadets is

that you could split them up into

    flights, and have competitions. In

    order to perform these opportuni-

ties there has to be responsibili-

    ties. That’s where First Sergeant

    comes in.

As a First Sergeant you are en-

    countered with diverse responsi-

    bilities. The responsibilities con-

sist of making sure that cadets

are passing their tests for promo-

tions, excelling in drill, and having

the cadets serve the core values

to their fullest! How well the ca-

dets perform as a squadron re-

flects on what type of leadership

    that the sergeants, cadet com-

    mander, and the whole squadron

itself is teaching the cadets. It

takes time, effort, and sacrifice to

    perform the responsibilities to

their best abilities. I wouldn’t have

been able to be where I am now

if it wasn’t for the tremendoushelp of the sergeants, squadron

staff, and of course the wonderful

    support of my awesome family.

Some people may think that be-

ing a First Sergeant is just anoth-

er job or task, but I strongly disa-

gree. It is one individual’s enor-

mous duty, and it is a privilege

and I am honored to serve as a

First Sergeant in the Civil Air Pa-

    trol.

    A Cadet Perspective—Colorado Encampment 2012

    /1st Lt Josh Salvato

his summer I was lucky enough

o have the opportunity to attend

nd staff the Colorado Wing 2012ummer Encampment. In March I

was chosen to become a Flight

    Commander, and was selected

or ECHO Flight. As a staff mem-

ber, I was required to come to the

    encampment early to attend a

training exercise. For 4 days the

    staff, both senior members and

cadets, trained to become betterleaders and to standardize the

practices that would be taught to

    the basic cadets.

    Following the staff training we

inducted a new year of basic ca-

dets. Over the course of the next

few days we started to train and

shape the cadets to become thefuture leaders that they can all

    become.
