From the Commander . . .Capt Jason Erickson

There are no secrets to success.

It is the result of preparation, hard

work, learning from failure.

Colin Powell

I have wanted for some time now

to impart to the members and the

world at large what the plans are

for the next year or two. The

current plan is for us to continue

to excel in what we are doing,

but, I can see areas that need

some growth and improvement.

If you see an area that you want

help improve just let me know!

We are on track for the Quality

Unit Award, and with Capt Jessa

Erickson leading the charge I

have high hopes that we will earn

it for this year. Please look over

to the left to see what we need to

make this happen.

 Aerospace education is some-

thing else that we need to grow

upon. I look around at some of

the squadrons that are excelling

and one of the tools in their bag

is a program called AEX. This

stands for Aerospace Education

Excellence. This will push us up

to new heights and assist us in

providing the best training possi-

ble for our cadets, seniors, and

the community at large. Cadet

Hohenberger and I will be leading

the way to make this happen.

Our pilot corps needs to be ex-

panded and trained. They are a

vital part of our mission in West-

ern Iowa. If you know of any

pilots who wish to pick up some

new skills and spend time with a

worthy cause please let them

know about CAP. SM Jake John-

son is currently heading up our

Pilot Corps.

Safety is an ongoing concern.

Everything we do, we do with

safety in mind. Capt Todd Bean

is not only heading this up but is

also in charge of our medical

services. Due to recent changes

to CAPR 62-1 we are now re-

quired to have a Cadet Safety

Officer who will act as a liaiso

between the cadets and the s

ior members and will assist C

Bean in his quest for safety co

pliance and success. This ca

must be an NCO or officer. R

member, we all are responsib

for safety.

Our squadron has never been

strong as it is now. This is on

possible with the help of the

members we have assisting a

supporting the squadron as a

whole. We are where we are

because we worked as a team

get there. I want to thank you

However, This is not a reason

slow down and celebrate a jo

well done. It is time to look to

horizon and prepare for what

next. Join with us and make

next year our best ever!

Due to the large number of senior members in our

squadron, we have been given permission to hold a

Squadron Leadership Course in Red Oak. We’ve

chosen to hold this class on October 20 & 21, 2012

to coincide with the 3rd Saturday meeting .

The location has not yet been set, but we are work-

ing on this as well as securing instructors for the

course.

The Squadron Leadership Course is a great intro-

ductory course into the senior member role within the

squadron. While it is a required component for com-

pletion of Level II, it’s very informative and helpful for

those who wish to play an active role in their sq

ron (whether or not you hold a duty position).

Course fees will be nominal and only enough to

er materials and lunch for Saturday so please

advantage of this great opportunity to complet

course without having to make the trek elsewhe

Please mark this weekend on calendar and pl

attend!

The State of the Squadron

/2d Lt Josh Salvato

adet Commander

am happy to report to you all

hat the state of our Squadron is

rong. We are currently close to

eing the strongest we’ve evereen in terms of cadet member-

hip. Although we may not be a

rge squadron, we are an active

ne with almost 90% of our mem-

ers having attended a meeting

the last month. Attendance and

ecruiting are on the rise, but they

an always be better! Talk to your

ends, family, and even people

you meet about CAP and make

sure to let someone know if you

will not be at the next meeting.

I am proud of the level of growth I

have seen, not only in the squad-

ron, but in the individual mem-bers as well. We have a strong

cadet corps which appears to

only be getting stronger.

The squadron will soon be head-

ed in new directions, making

some areas completely different

for most of us. It will take a com-

bined group effort to ensure that

our squadron runs effectively, but

I have no doubt that we can do it!

I would like to personally thank

you all for helping to make this

squadron great! It takes a lot of

time a dedication to make asquadron succeed and if not for

the contributions of all the mem-

bers, it would not happen.

Obtaining Achievement #1—a How-to Guide

Cadets, are you a little unsure of

ust how to get that first promo-

on? If so, no worries, here’s a

tep-by-step guide.

Your first objective will be to reg-

ster for e-services and log in forhe first time. To do that, click

ere.  Once you’ve logged in,

omplete the Operational Securi-

y Awareness (OPSEC) training

as well as the Equal Opportunity

(EO) Training and Intro to CAP

Safety 10-question quiz.

Now that the basics are done you

can move on to tackling your last

three requirements: completeyour cadet physical fitness testing

(CPFT) requirements during a

2nd Tuesday meeting, the Chap-

ter 1 Learn to Lead test found

online in e-services, and the

Chapter 1 Drill & Ceremonies test

during any meeting.

That’s it!

If you run into any troubles alongthe way or need a helping hand

don’t forget to call on your men-

tor. After all, that’s what they’re

there for!
