From the Deputy Commander . . .Capt Jessa Erickson
Excuse me while I put some hats
on…
Okay, first up I’m going to talk
Professional Development (PD).
I’m proud to announce that as of
today we are at 100% completion
for OPSEC training! In addition,
we are at 95.8% completion
(that’s 23 out of 24) for Intro to
CAP Safety and Equal Opportuni-
ty training! Now THAT’S some-
thing to be proud of, and we
couldn’t be at those numbers
without everyone’s help, so
THANK YOU!!! If you haven’t yet
completed Intro to CAP Safety or
EO, please do that as soon as
possible so we can hit that 100%
mark across the board.
92.3% of all senior members
(including Cadet Sponsors so
that’s 12 out of 13)) have com-
pleted Level I training. While this
is a STELLAR achievement, I’d
really like to make it 100%. If you
haven’t yet done so, please talk
to me and let me know how I can
help you finish this up.
So that brings us now to Level II
training. I’ve sent out a few
emails inquiring about Officer
Basic Course (OBC) participa-
tion. If you haven't yet let me
know that you’d like to get in on
this, I need to hear from you
ASAP! We also have the Squad-
ron Leadership School (SLS)
coming up on October 20-21 in
Red Oak. We are very fortunate
to be able to host our own two-
day class so please take ad-
vantage of this. Capt Jason Er-
ickson will be the course director
so if you have any questions,
don't hesitate to let him know!
Next up—Emergency Services
(ES). With check rides and o-
rides coming up VERY SOON I
want to emphasize the im-
portance of knowing and under-
standing how to behave and work
with a CAP aircraft. If you have-
n’t already done so, please log on
to e-Services and complete the
Aircraft Ground Handling vide
and short 10-question quiz. A
if it’s been a while and you th
you could use a refresher, ple
feel free to take it again.

moving on this so here are th
links you’ll need. These are a
taken online at your convenie
and I do have some tips and
tricks, so please let me know
can help you get these crosse
off your to-do list.

Due to the large number of senior members in our
squadron, we have been given permission to hold a
Squadron Leadership Course in Red Oak. We’ve
chosen to hold this class on October 20 & 21, 2012
to coincide with the 3rd Saturday meeting .
The location has not yet been set, but we are work-
ing on this as well as securing instructors for the
course.
The Squadron Leadership Course is a great intro-
ductory course into the senior member role within the
squadron. While it is a required component for com-
pletion of Level II, it’s very informative and helpful for
those who wish to play an active role in their sq
ron (whether or not you hold a duty position).
Course fees will be nominal and only enough to
er materials and lunch for Saturday so please
advantage of this great opportunity to complet
course without having to make the trek elsewhe
I know we’re still a ways out yet, but if you are
ested in attending please fill out a CAPF 17
send it to [email protected].

Cadet Professional Development
o, you thought Professional
evelopment (PD) was only for
enior members huh? Not so
rasshopper! PD very much
pplies to cadets as well, and I’m
ere to help.
s of today, a whopping 90.9%
adets (that’s 10 out of 11) have
ompleted Achievement #1.
hat’s a statistic to be proud of so
at yourselves on the back for
our hard work!
t last night’s meeting First Ser-
eant Hohenberger talked with
each of you about your current
achievements and what you need
to do yet in order to make your
next promotion. Please take that
information and put it to good use
as you prepare to test. Keep in
mind that online testing requiresa 7-day waiting period to re-take
a failed test. So if you’re coming
a little too close to the end of your
time in grade, or TIG, plan ac-
cordingly and be sure to really
absorb the content you need to
know for your test(s).
Please also don’t forget that it is
YOUR responsibility to request a
time to take your drill and cere-
monies test as well as a time to
go before the promotions board.
These requests need to be made
at least 1 week in advance so we
can make sure we have ade-quate personnel on hand to give
you the attention you deserve.
Each and every one of you is
making GREAT progress lately
and we’re all very proud of you,
keep up the great work!
Obtaining Achievement #2—a How-to Guide
You’ve completed the first hurdle
n your CAP career so naturally
ow it’s time to move forward and
nto Achievement #2.
As with your last achievement,
ou will have a Leadership andorresponding drill & ceremonies
est to complete, this time you’ll
eed to focus on Chapter 2 Learn
o Lead.
The biggest difference you’ll see
this time around is the addition of
an Aerospace test. There is no
set progression, meaning you
can take any module you want
and you don’t have to go in order
if you don’t want to. So plan ac-cordingly!
The other change up this time is
the addition of going before a
promotions board. Once you
have all of your testing complete
please request a board of review
from Capt Erickson at least one
week in advance.
If you run into any troubles alongthe way or need a helping hand
don’t forget to call on your men-
tor. After all, that’s what they’re
there for!

Lt Brett White
seems like my wife and I cov-
ed about every mode of trans-
rtation possible on our recent
cation. One of the most enter-
ning moments of the trip wasplaining to the rental car asso-
ate how it was possible to have
rchased a one way ticket to
awaii. “But sir, this is an is-
nd…you have to have return
ght information!” You see, we
ere in Hawaii to meet our son,
aleb. Kaleb is a former CAP
det and currently serves in the
S Navy. His ship, the aircraft
rrier USS Carl Vinson, was
meward bound from a six
onth deployment. We were
invited along with 930 other
friends and family to board at
Pearl Harbor and ride the ship to
their home port of San Diego,
California. Needless to say, it
was a trip of a lifetime!
Just before the ship left, we were
able to visit the memorial of the
Japanese bombing of Pearl Har-
bor. Standing on the memorial
over the sunken USS Arizona
really brought home the sacrifice
of the many men and women
who have given their all in service
to our country. To those whose
loved ones have joined the ranks
of those killed in protection our
liberty and freedom I offer my
humble gratitude.
We then spent 6 nights and 5
days aboard the Vinson. We slept
in the same ‘racks’ as the sailors.
To say they were tight quarters
would be understatement! There
is about 16 inches from the top of
your mattress to the bottom of thebunk above you. Let’s just say
that never have I been as appre-
ciative of our queen sized bed!
