Any child who has just received First Holy Communion can tell you that the Holy Trinity is one God in three persons: God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Explaining what that means is more difficult. The best we can do is try and describe the Holy Trinity by using analogies. Saint Patrick used the example of a 3-leaf clover. The clover is one sprig with three leaves. Each leaf is distinct, but all are one in the same plant. Any explanation of the Holy Trinity is bound to be inadequate. It is part of what we refer to as The Mystery of Faith, and even gifted theologians struggle with explaining it. This best way I try to wrap my head around the concept of the Holy Trinity is in terms of a family. Many of our parishioners at Saint John’s and Good Samaritan have met my dad. He was quite a character, and even when his memory began to fail him, he still somehow kept that sense of humor that endeared him to so many. My mom was very different, and though I have described her many times in homilies, none of our parishioners ever met my mom. One of her many gifts was the ability to be a good listener. Hopefully I picked up a little of each of them. Regardless of whether they are here or have passed on, they will always be a part of me and my sister. We are one family, united by love. That bond of love cannot be destroyed even by death. Jesus came to earth not just to die for our sins. He came, in part, to introduce us to His divine family. Instead of thinking of His Father as the Almighty God of the Old Testament who lives on high, Jesus encouraged His followers to refer to God as Abba, an ancient term of endearment -- kind of like Pap-pap. In leaving His earthly home, Jesus also sent the Holy Spirit, not just to dwell with us, but to actually dwell in us. In leaving behind His Sacred Body & Blood, Jesus wanted us to become one with Him, and by extension, a part of His Family. Families help shape us into who we are. We use the term “Church Family” every now and then, and in a very real sense, that is what God calls us to be. I can look back at each of my parishes and see how they have shaped me as a priest, and wherever I go, they will always be an inseparable part of me. It is a bond that goes beyond buildings and pews; it’s a bond of love. It’s what family is all about. Father Joe

his weekend we celebrate the feast of the Holy Trinity.
