Pastor’s Corner Dear Parishioners,
Our high school has begun classes and our grade school
begins on August 29th. Construction continues at both schools!
Registration continues for our Oneight Confirmation program
(high school), Edge program (middle school) as well as our initiation programs for our
adults. The Youth Ministry office is located at the Life Teen House on Chestnut Ave.
You can enter from our parking lot. Contact our youth ministers at x381. If you are an
adult (or child over the age of 7) and are interested in pursuing baptism, first
communion and/or confirmation, please get in touch with our RCIA director, Sandra
Rodas, ext. 211. She is also reachable at [email protected]. Her office is located
upstairs at our grade school.
MASS ON THE GRASS is almost here!!! This is our annual outdoor Mass set
up on Louise St. between Elk and Lomita Avenues. The street will be blocked off and
the Mass takes place at 5:30 PM on Sunday, September 10th. Please mark the date!!
Continued from last week’s pastor column from The Priest magazine (March
2016) by Dr. Decelles (who had been diagnosed with ALS):
“I pray for the salvation of all human beings, even those whose lives don’t
seem to offer much hope of salvation: Judas and Hitler, Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, Pol Pot,
Idi Amin, and Saddam Hussein. Since God is eternal and outside time, I pray that He
might help with His grace these men who have already died. I pray that if they are in
purgatory, they might be ushered into paradise according to His knowledge and
wisdom, justice and mercy. I pray for every man, woman, and child alive now who will
die in the future, and every person to be born and die in the future. I pray that all will
freely choose salvation. In a special way, I pray for members of any extended family
who lived or died in less than ideal fashion.”
“Jesus invites us to embrace unavoidable suffering as He did. ‘Take this cup
away from me. But let it be as you, not I would have it’ (Mk 14:30-36). Jesus’s invitation
is actually presented as a condition of discipleship. ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of
mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me’ (Mk 8:30). ‘Cross’
here may refer first and foremost to a person’s vocation with the hardships that it
inevitably contains. But it also includes the sufferings that are part and parcel of the
human condition. These have to be embraced. Freely accepted bodily suffering is a
powerful witness to the reality and life of Jesus.
“It is not abnormal in the midst of physical and mental suffering to feel
abandoned by God. Jesus experienced that himself. ‘My God, my God, why have you
deserted me’ (Mk 15:34). Although Jesus is quoting these words from Psalm 22:1, they
represent His feelings. Jesus, however, did not lose hope in the Father, and neither
should we. God permits suffering, but He never abandons. He gives us the grace we
need to cope with our situation. ‘Come to me, all you who labor and are overburdened,
and I will give you rest’ (Mt 11:38). If people give good gifts to their children, ‘how much
more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him’ (Mt 7:11). With
God to help us, sickness should not cause us to fear. ‘God himself has said, “I will not
fail you or desert you, and so we can say with confidence: ‘With the Lord to help me, I
fear nothing”’” (Heb 13:5-6).
Summer peace and blessings -

More Parish News
At all special celebrations at Holy Family, including Christmas and Easter, the
priests and deacons wear matching vestments to celebrate the mass. Our
current vestments are over 25 years old and need to be replaced. If you would
like to sponsor one of the vestments, your name or a memorial name for a
loved one can be embroidered on the inside back flap of the vestment. We are
hoping to fund this project so we can use the new vestments for Christmas. All
our old vestments will be donated to our sister parish in Haiti. If you would like
to sponsor a vestment, please contact Deacon Ron Baker at
[email protected] or 818-247-2222 x552 or Cecile Nouh at x223.

Teach kids when to say
something
It is important to help children
understand the difference
between telling on others and sharing information that
could help keep themselves or someone else safe. Teach
children about secrets that are okay (a surprise birthday
party), and secrets that are never okay (don’t tell mom or
dad that...), and, perhaps most importantly, what to do if
someone asks them to keep a bad secret. Speaking up
can save a kid from harm or abuse. To request a copy of
the VIRTUS® article “To Tattle or Protect”
email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.
