ST. MATTHEW SPOTLIGHT MINISTRYFAMILY LIFE OFFICE

Baptism-Sunday School-PSR-RCIA-Youth Ministry-MarriageThe Family Life Office supports our community of believers as they come to know, love, and serve Jesus Christ. We accompany families through Sacramental preparation, catechesis, mentoring, and evangelization, helping them live

out and grow in their Catholic Faith through each phase of family life. The parishioners of St. Matthew support the Family Life Office through their involvement in the Family Life ministries. Catechists, mentor couples, RCIA sponsors, Sunday School teachers, and volunteering to help with special projects and events. Parishioners also help us to purchase supplies, books, fun activities, retreats, resources, and event materials. For more information and ways to get involved, visit https://stmatthew.net/family-life.Thank you for your support of the Family Life Office and all the ministries at St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Parish. ENRICH YOUR LENT BY ENTHRONING THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS IN YOUR HOME“In the Heart of the Redeemer we adore God’s love for humanity, His will for universal salvation, His infinite mercy.” Pope Benedict XVIAt the recent Men’s and Women’s Conferences, you heard a moving testimony about the fruits to be realized from enthroning the Sacred Heart of Jesus in your home. Throughout the Diocese, hundreds of families have done so, and have come to know more deeply the Heart of the Redeemer.Among the 12 promises Jesus made to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque during her visions of the Sacred Heart in the 1670s, He said, “I will bless every place in which an image of my Heart is exposed and honored. I will establish peace in their homes. I will comfort them in all their afflictions.”Who could pass up an offer like that?As you engage in greater prayer, fasting and almsgiving during Lent, what could be a better way to further enrich the season than to Enthrone the Sacred Heart in your home? To learn more, or to schedule your enthronement, contact any of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in the parish: Jeff and Rita Klein – [email protected] or 614-496-7408; Mark and Beth Huddy – [email protected] or 740-964-0126; or Frank and Judeen Hartge – [email protected] or 614-397-4692. Or visit welcomehisheart.com.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Good Friday is a day of both fast and abstinence from meat. There is a limit of one full meal and two lesser meals for all who have completed their 18th year and have not yet reached their 60th year. All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat for those who are 14 years of age and older.Weekdays of Lent – There is no obligation to fast. However, voluntary acts of self-denial are recommended.Easter duty – All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, from the first Sunday of Lent (March 1) to Trinity Sunday (June 7), unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year. After having attained the age of discretion, each of the faithful is bound by an obligation faithfully to confess serious sins at least once a year.

LENT IS A TIME TO RETURN – This Lent, we invite the parish to reflect on these words from the prophet Joel: "Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and relenting in punishment." Lent is the perfect time for people to return to the Church in preparation to meet the Risen Christ at Easter. We are here to welcome everyone, no matter where they are in their faith journey. Starting on Ash Wednesday, invitations to come home will be available in the Gathering Space. Please take one (or more) and invite family and friends who have been away to join you in celebrating Jesus’ triumph over sin and death. We will also have small handouts available with some suggestions for how to talk to people about returning to the Church. We hope to provide additional information in the future that can help us learn how to have these difficult conversations, and, most importantly, how to listen. For more information, please contact Pat Martin at [email protected].

EXULT! PRAISE AND WORSHIP ADORATION – St. Matthew will be hosting an hour of Eucharistic Adoration and Praise and Worship each second Saturday of the month. Come and join us in the worship space on Saturday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome!

EASTER FLOWERS – It has been a tradition in our parish to remember a loved one by making a contribution to our Easter flowers. (Suggested donation is $10.00.) An envelope for Easter Flowers is included in our monthly and quarterly packet of offertory envelopes or you can give electronically through Online Giving. Please clearly print the name of the person(s) you wish to remember and drop the envelope in the collection basket, or submit the names through Online Giving by Sunday, March 29. Thank you.

STEWARDSHIP AT ST. MATTHEW - If you are currently giving through our ECO (electronic contribution option) automatic withdrawals, we encourage you to learn more about our Online Giving system. Over the next few months, we will be phasing out our ECO and asking anyone who wants to give through automatic withdrawal to set up an Online Giving account instead. For more information, see our website: www.stmatthew.net/giving or email us at [email protected]. Thank you for supporting our efforts to worship, serve, and evangelize!

ATTENTION, ALL VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS – The St. Matthew volleyball league is just around the corner. We will be playing on Wednesday nights and starting on March 11. All skill levels are welcome, so get your team together. Please call or write Tim Bray with any questions, to sign up a team, or if you want to be put on a free agent list (614-296-5823 or [email protected]). We hope to see you all out on the court!

STATIONS OF THE CROSS will be Fridays in Lent at 12:45 p.m. (with grades K-3), 1:30 p.m. (with grades 4-8) and at 7:00 p.m. (There will only be 1:30 p.m. Stations on March 27 due to First Friday Mass; there will only be 1:30 p.m. Stations on March 27 due to Spring Break and the Holy Hour of Reparation.)

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 8, 2020

BISHOP ROBERT BARRON’SPIVOTAL PLAYERS

Bishop Fulton J. Sheen and Flannery O'Connor

*Notice the change of dates!*

ARE COMING TO ST. MATTHEW!(Free event)

CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players is a multi-part series that illumines a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of western civilization.

Bishop Fulton J. SheenThe Communicator

Long before the Internet and social media, Fulton Sheen pioneered Catholic evangelization through the media. At a time when most preachers spoke only from pulpits, Sheen used electronic media as a means to reach far beyond the parish walls. His innovative radio and television programs, beamed out to believers and skeptics alike, reached upwards of 30 million people per week. Sheen had a gift for spreading the faith clearly and persuasively, and he paved the path for today's media evangelists.

Flannery O'ConnorThe Storyteller

Flannery O'Connor's influence on contemporary culture, particularly literature and film, is profound. Her novels and short stories have been described as shocking, convoluted, funny, and violent, and they are filled with unforgettably strange characters. But they are also, from beginning to end, haunted by Christ. O'Connor radically changes our idea of what religious fiction can be. Her startling prose awakens us to sin and, consequently, to the need for salvation.Join Bishop Barron as he traces the lives and contributions of these two pivotal players.

Bishop Sheen video Flannery O’Connor video • Monday, March 23 • Monday, March 30• 7:00-8:00 p.m. • 7:00-8:00 p.m.• St. Anthony Room • St. Anthony Room

Both viewings are free of charge. No need to register. Please bring a friend! Questions? Contact Lorraine Curtin at [email protected] or 614-946-7585 or Pat Martin at [email protected].

THE FRUITS OF THE GOSPEL OF LIFE:EVANGELIUM VITAE 25 YEARS LATER

March 25, 2020 marks the 25th Anniversary of Pope St. John Paul II’s encyclical letter Evangelium Vitae. Please join us that evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the St. Anthony Room for a panel of speakers organized by the diocesan Office of Social Concerns about Evangelium Vitae and how we can continue to build a culture of life amid the challenges of our day.

Written by Pope St. John Paul II, this Church teaching on the value and inviolability of every human life inspired Catholics around the world when it was first released in 1995. The evening includes a video anniversary message from Bishop Robert J. Brennan and presentations on the following topics: Walking with Mothers by Monica Flynn of Mommies Matter; Post Abortion Reconciliation and Healing by Becky D’Alesio of Catholic Social Services’ Project Rachel; Bioethics and End of Life Issues by Fr. Bob Penhallurick, Chaplain of the Catholic Medical Association Guild of Central Ohio; and the Death Penalty by Jim Tobin of the Catholic Conference of Ohio. The event is being co-sponsored by St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Parish and the diocesan Office for Social Concerns. It is free and open to the public. For more details, call 614-241-2540 or email [email protected].

ST. MATTHEW SCHOOL TUITION ASSISTANCE – This is not related to tuition offset by the Parish Grant. If you are interested in applying for tuition assistance (either from the Diocese or from St. Matthew), please note that the deadline to apply is Sunday, March 15. Please visit www.factstuitionaid.com to apply. There is a $35.00 application fee which must accompany the application and only one application per family is required.

THE SAINT MATTHEW BOOK CLUB – The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Saint Gabriel Room. We will be discussing the book No Greater Love – A Biblical Walk through Christ‘s Passion by Edward Sri. All are welcome!

VISITING MINISTRY – Saint Matthew Parish has numerous care facilities for the elderly within its boundaries. In these care centers as well as in private homes, there are numerous parishioners who could enjoy a visitor every once in a while. When I go to visit or to take Communion, these elderly are so appreciative. Please consider becoming a part of our Visiting Ministry and sharing a half hour of your time each week or every other week with someone who is lonely. If you are interested, please contact Carol Ann Lombardi at 614-478-4328 or [email protected].

PARISH NURSERY – We are happy to offer a nursery for young children during the 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon Masses on Sundays, but we are unable to offer nursery care during the other weekend Masses due to lack of available volunteers. The safety of our children is our top priority, so we thank you for understanding. If you have any questions about the nursery, please contact Maria Ohalek at [email protected].

USHERS NEEDED! St. Matthew is in need of more ushers for certain Masses. Our priests rely heavily on the ushers to make all parishioners and visitors feel welcome, to administer the collection and also pitch in when extra duties are necessary. It is time for our community to embrace the gifts we’ve been given and we can’t wait to see how God provides for these specific needs. Please contact the Parish or 614-471-0212 for more information or to contribute.

FOLLOW ST. MATTHEW ON SOCIAL MEDIA! Follow our social media accounts for updates on Parish events, worship times, and more! Facebook: @StMatthewGahanna; Twitter: @GahannaStMatts; Instagram: @stmatthewapostle.

PLEASE HELP US KEEP YOUR RECORDS CURRENT! In an effort to ensure that our Parish database stays current, we are requesting that you update the Parish Roster form when you have a life event change such as change of address, marital status, birth of a child, etc. The form can be accessed via http://www.stmatthew.net/parish-roster-update or under Quick Links on Saint Matthew’s main page. If you have questions, please call the Parish Office at 614-471-0212. We appreciate your time, cooperation and commitment to the parish.

IF A FAMILY MEMBER IS SICK OR SERIOUSLY ILL, consider contacting the Parish Office at 614-471-0212 for one of the priests to administer the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist and the Anointing of the Sick. Due to HIPAA privacy laws, hospitals no longer notify church offices when parishioners are admitted. As well, in the case of serious illness, families are encouraged to contact us early allowing the priest and patient to talk about any spiritual needs they may have including receiving the Sacrament of Penance.

WE WELCOME INTO OUR FAMILY OF FAITH the following child who was baptized on Sunday, March 1: Lillian Mae Clayton.

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 8, 2020

A FREE MINI-BIBLE STUDY FOR THE SEASON OF LENTGet the most out of the Word of God that you will be hearing next weekend for the 3rd Sunday of Lent: The Samaritan Woman at the Well. Sessions for this lesson will be held on Thursday, March 12 and Sunday, March 15 (see below for more details). Lent is the perfect season to join in. To view a portion of the video for any week go to https://catholicproductions.com/blogs/mass-readings-explained-year-a.Here is sample of what you missed from the 2nd Sunday in Lent, The Mystery of the Transfiguration. Don’t miss next week’s lesson!Quote from Dr. Brant Pitre:

“Fourth, and this is really important and people often miss it. When Moses went up the mountain in the Old Testament, it said that the glory (the kavod), the glory cloud of the Lord, came down upon the top of Mount Sinai. This was the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night, but later rabbis would go on to call it the shekinah. It is the "tabernacle-ing" presence of God, the glory of the Lord, in the Old Testament. The same thing happens here in the New Testament. When Moses and Elijah appear and are talking with Jesus and the disciples see them, it said “a cloud overshadowed them” and the disciples are filled with awe and they fall on their faces. Why? Well because they know...that when the glory cloud comes down, God Himself is coming down to be in their presence. This is a theophany, a revelation of God, an appearance of God happening on the top of the mountain. Finally, in the Old Testament, when the cloud descended, it says that "God spoke to Moses from the cloud." And the same thing is true here in the New Testament, the voice of the father speaks from the cloud and says the words, ‘this is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.’ So just like God spoke from the cloud in the Old Testament, so too, He does in the New Testament. What then is the Mountain of the Transfiguration? What is the mystery here? Well the mystery is that this is like a new Mount Sinai. Jesus is acting like a new Moses, but he's a new and greater Moses, and he's bringing the disciples up that mountain to encounter God, to enter into the mystery of God and to also reveal to them His divine Sonship. Up to this point he's only shown them, in a sense, the veil of His humanity. They see Him eat, they see Him drink, they see Him get tired; but now he's showing them that not only is He fully man, but He is also a divine person. He's the glorious Son of the Father.”

ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO

AROUND THE DIOCESE

PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, ongoing initiatives and enhancements. Our Parish continues to put its best foot forward when it comes to hosting events. The Honor Choir did not disappoint. The countless volunteers cared for our 240 student singers from over 20 parishes concluding with a performance for over 400 people, including Bishop Brennan. The Knights of Columbus continue to treat us to the best Fish Fry dinner in the Diocese. With minimum wait, a wonderful meal and great company, it is hard to imagine how they can get any better, but they do. As an encore, we were treated to a Pancake Breakfast Sunday morning. The new parish kitchen continues to perform for all of us. For the Facility Team’s part, we have been working on table maintenance making it easier to set up and clean up after events. The St. Matthew School Father/Daughter Dance this weekend was a great success amid all the spring sports getting started in the Parish Activity Center. We are fortunate and blessed to be able to serve literally thousands of visitors to our campus on a weekly basis. The Facilities Team continues to work hard to ensure our campus, our church and our school looks its very best for every Mass, meeting and event. When there are well over 50 ministries and groups regularly utilizing and sharing our spaces, it takes cooperation and effort from everyone to maintain our high standard. We appreciate our groups being conscientious about how they leave the space for the next group or activity. We would like everyone to treat our campus like you would treat your own home, taking care of furniture, cleaning up after yourself, removing mud from shoes, ensuring ovens and lights are turned off and things are put back the way they would like to find them. The Facilities Team expects to scrub and wax floors, shine glass and mirrors, wipe down walls and fixtures, maintain supplies, empty trash and make sure mechanical systems are working properly. It doesn’t take much effort on everyone’s part to pick up that piece of paper or report something that doesn’t look, feel or sound right. We want to take our campus to the next level for all to enjoy. Thank you for your help.We appreciate this opportunity to provide these updates and welcome suggestions for facility enhancements. Please contact George Harvey at [email protected].
