Tipping combines these two processes in what seems like the only real modification one can easily do to improve bullet performance. Generally, larger bullets, and/or those with smaller diameter meplats to start with, will show less BC gain than smaller diameter bullets and/or those with larger meplats. Now don’t expect this proce- dure to work miracles. This will not turn an MOA rifle into a record-setter, but it is just an- other small step to shave a little bit off of your group size. The tools to do the tipping operation are now regularly available from several sources. Meplat trimmers are available from John Hoover, Montour County Rifles, Dave Tooley, Sinclair and many other suppliers. Affordable “point-up” dies are only available from two sources that I am aware of: Whidden Gunworks and John Hoover. Copyright 2009 - Accurate- Shooter.com | 6mmbr.com – All Rights Reserved Tipping, Trimming and Pointing… As most of you know, two Light-Gun (LG) Score records were broken over the weekend of Match 7 (Aug 15/16). On Saturday, I squeaked by Ed Kenzakoski’s 10-shot LG Score record with a 100-6x 4.864, and then Sunday at Reade Range, Andy Murtagh quickly took that record again with a 100-4x 4.277” group (Nice group Andy!). Both of us were shooting “tipped” bullets at the time. Tipping is not a com- pletely new procedure, but has been recently adapted to be more available to most shoot- ers. “Tipping” as it is currently referred to, involves truing the meplat of the bullet (by trim- ming the end flush) and then closing the end with a pointing die. This results in a bullet with a more aesthetically pleasing and much smaller diameter meplat. All of this is done to accom- plish 2 main goals: a more consistent and increased Ballis- tic Coefficient (BC). A more consistent BC among bullets will produce a group exhibiting less vertical, and increased BC will get the bullets to the target faster to cut down on wind drift. Trimming the meplat of the bullet, which was more common a few years ago, was a means to make each bullet’s BC as similar as possible. Believe it or not, within a box of bullets, the BC can vary quite a bit. Trimming meplats may have succeeded at making ballistic coefficients more consistent, but it also reduced the BC quite a bit. With my 6BR, I saw nearly a 10% BC reduction by simply trimming to a full clean up, which is equivalent to remov- ing about 0.005”-0.006” from the meplat. This reduced BC means that the bullets require more elevation and more time to get to the target. Pointing, which has become more common only in the past 3 years, is another modification that is meant to make BC’s more consistent bullet-to-bullet, but it also serves to increase the BC due to the decreased meplat diameter. This causes bullets to require less elevation to get on target and they get there faster. S HOOTER S CORNER BY J ASON B ANEY T HE ORIGINAL P ENNSYLVANIA 1000 YARD BENCHREST CLUB , INC . Tipping, Trimming and Pointing… As most of you know, two Light-Gun (LG) Score records were broken over the weekend of Match 7 (Aug 15/16). Tipping is not a com-pletely new procedure, but has been recently adapted to be more available to most shoot-ers. “Tipping” as it is currently referred to, involves truing the meplat of the bullet (by trim-ming the end flush) and then closing the end with a pointing die. This results in a bullet with a more aesthetically pleasing and much smaller diameter meplat.

All of this is done to accom-plish 2 main goals: a more consistent and increased Ballis-

tic Coefficient (BC). With my 6BR, I saw nearly a 10% BC reduction by simply trimming to a full clean up, which is equivalent to remov-ing about 0.005”-0.006” from the meplat.
