In what started off as alegislative session chockfull of weighty issuessuch as debating signifi-cant tax policy changes, reducing the state budget, carving out a Medicaidfix, shoring up KPERSissues, and creatingCongressional and StateDistrict maps, theLegislature adjournedlate March with nothingworth mentioning for itswork from Januaryt h rough Ma rc h . The re a l i tyis that elected officialsmust pass a budget

and they must passCongressional and StateDistrict maps beforeheading home – everything else couldpotentially wait until thenext legislative session.

That type of work ethiclikely wouldn’t cut it inthe private sector, but itseems that gamesman-ship under the dome isthe method of the day.Legislators returnedApril 25, with a signifi-cant amount of businessto deal with.

Pre s u m a b l y, the diffe re n ce sregarding the state’s

$14.1 billion all fundsbudget will be workedout fairly quickly, whichleaves the issue of mapson the table.

The Chamber has advocated for Manhattanand Riley County toremain in the 2ndCongressional Districtand that message seemsto have resonated withlawmakers. The issueremains as to whether ornot the House and Senatecan agree on maps thatalso get the nod of theGovernor. It looks to be alengthy Veto Session, with many predicting anadjournment around May 11. Stay tuned foradditional upd ates re l ate dto accomplishments bythe 2012 Legislature.

Benefits Sell

There’s an old sales adagethat I use when helpingclients with their marketingefforts. It’s very simple butworth repeating,“FeaturesTell - Benefits Sell. ”Whilewe all like talking about thecoolest new features of a

product or service, whatour customers usually con-nect with is the benefit thatthe product or service willprovide. EconomistTheodore Levitt said it best,“People don’t want to buy aquarter-inch drill, they wanta quarter inch hole.”

With warm weather quicklyapproaching I see lots ofbusinesses, from landscap-ing services to restaurantsand retail stores, trying tomake a big summer splash. At the same time, manypotential customers wantto enjoy the season but getbusy with work, homemaintenance, family vaca-tions and other activities.Use this to your advantageand promote the time-sav-ings and/or lifestyle bene-fits that your product orservice can help the cus-tomer achieve.

For example, if you’re sell-ing gym memberships, tellyour customers how goodthey’ll look at the pool thissummer. If you do land-scaping and yard mainte-nance, let your customersknow that they’ll have timeto go on vacation and stillget the best-looking yard inthe neighborhood.

Take a few minutes andthink about your business’sbest products or services. Now find a fun way to tellyour customers about thesummer-time benefits ofbuying from you.
