Caregiver InformationCaregiver InformationCaregiver Information We frequently hear that there is a societal epidemic of children cared for by concerned and loving people other than their own parents due to mental illness, drug addiction and other life adversities. Those of us who are caring for the children of others often wonder, where are these all caregivers? I don't know many. Are there relative caregivers (grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.) with students at Parkside who would be interested in an informal meeting to explore unmet needs regarding this enormous and life-changing responsibility we have accepted? Non-Parkside affiliated people are certainly welcome to respond so if you know anyone who is in a caregiver situation and interested in exploring support please let them know. Contact Linda Emmert: [email protected]

Join our pack! Parkside has long been affiliated with Cub Scout Pack 559. Cub Scouting is a year round family-oriented program designed for boys in kindergarten through fifth grades. The boys earn recognition in areas of character development, fitness, service, respectful relationships, spiritual growth, fun, adventure, good citizenship and more! You are invited to our summer kickoff event at Shadowcreek on Sunday May 7th for an afternoon of fishing, dodgeball, bike riding and skill instruction. Addi-tional summer activities will include hiking, camp outs, fishing, an Indianapolis Indians baseball game, Clifty Falls reptile experience, and a drive in movie. For more information contact Matt Sim-mons at [email protected].

Pack Meetings: Mondays 6:30 - 8pm Aug - May Asbury United Methodist Church

Our Buddy Bench Has Arrived!

What is a Buddy Bench? The buddy bench is a special tool on the play-ground that is used to help create friendships and eliminate loneliness during recess. Co-lumbus North senior, Olivia Kline, wanted to help improve our playground this year. After researching the Buddy Bench project around other schools in the US, we asked if she wanted to help with that project. She built the bench and it is now installed on our Parkside playground. How do you use the Buddy Bench? The Buddy Bench is not a place to sit and play with friends and it is not a piece of playground equip-ment. It is a place kids can go when they are feeling lonely or left out. Here are some strategies to use with the Buddy Bench:

Strategy BEFORE using the Buddy Bench: Have a plan for what you want to do during recess. Look around and see if there is anyone doing the same thing you want to do. Go to that person or group. Smile and say something nice! Try to join the fun!

Strategy 1: If that doesn’t work, go to the Buddy Bench. Rest and think about what you

would like to do. You can be positive while on the Buddy Bench by thinking about a plan to have fun.

Strategy 2: Look for fun to join. Look around at the activities going on during recess. If you see something you are interested in or someone you would like to play with, get off the bench and go join the fun! Ask if they would like to walk, talk, or play.

Strategy 3: Sit and wait for a friend on the bench. When a person asks you to play, go play with them! If you choose to sit on the bench and wait for a friend, you must say “Yes” to the friend that invites you to play.

Strategy 4: Adult Help: If you are on the Buddy Bench for a while and no one invites you to play, ask an adult for some ideas. The adult may help you with an idea for friends and activities to join.

Strategy 5: Be a Bench Watcher!! If you see someone on the Buddy Bench while you are playing at recess, invite them to play with you! This shows that you care about others and will make the person feel good about yourselves. You might also make a new friend!

Students have been taught the above strategies and with your help reinforcing them, we hope the Buddy Bench will be a great tool for growing friendships and eliminating loneliness on our playground! 7

Dear Fifth Grade Parent:

THE TIME IS NOW!

The opportunity to get signed up for 6th grade band is upon us! The students have been to the Symphony and

have completed a music survey with their music teacher. Now it is time to choose your instrument!

You play a great role in making the decision regarding your child’s participation in the band program. We

hope you will discuss the program with your child after they have had a chance to try out some instruments.

Below are the dates of the FINAL instrument testing and sign up meetings:

May 2 - Instrument Fitting and Band Sign Up at Parkside Elementary

May 3 – Instrument Fitting and Band Sign Up at Southside Elementary

May 4 – Instrument Fitting and Band Sign Up at Schmitt Elementary

At this meeting, your child will have an opportunity to try out several instruments in order to determine which

one they are best suited to play. After the fitting is finished you will have an opportunity to talk with school

music specialists from Paige’s Music in Indianapolis about renting or buying a good quality instrument for

your child. The Paige’s representatives will be prepared to help you complete rental contracts that night. If

you have questions on rental or purchase prices, you can call Paige’s at 1-800-382-1099 or go to the website

www.paigesmusic.com

Instrument testing will be done by appointment only between 4-8:00 pm. Please contact me to set up your

testing appointments. You can e-mail me [email protected] or call me at North High School 376-4258.

I urge you to consider carefully the enrollment of your child in instrumental music, for it may lead to educa-

tional possibilities that might otherwise not be available. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Keith Burton

Director of Bands, Parkside, Schmitt, Southside Elementary Schools

Bonus ProgramsBonus Programs Campbell's is ending their Labels for Education program August 1, 2017. If you happen to find any more labels before the end of this school year please send them in! I still have time to mail them. There are some Box Tops labels that carry an expiration of 6/1/2017. If you happen to have any please send them in - I will make a special mailing for these. Don't let your Box Tops go to waste! Expired Box Tops are not accepted by their program. Thank you for all your support!

Thanks to ALL of YOU for participating in our 2016-2017 pop tab collection contest. After finishing a close second last year, the

Rockcreek Bulldogs nearly doubled their collection from last year, to make sure they took the top prize this year.

2017 winners are: 1st Place: Rockcreek Elementary (424 pounds/1,561 tabs per student), 2nd Place: Busy Bees Academy (120

pounds/1,329 tabs per student), 3rd Place: Mt. Healthy Elementary (191pounds/553 tabs per student).

Our total collection was down 2% vs. last year at 1,487 pounds, and we collected just under 2 million tabs. This will enable us to

donate $743.50 to the Ronald McDonald House.

Through our 16 years of the Pop Tab Contest, we have collected over 33 million tabs and donated $15,207 to the Ronald McDonald

House. This would not be possible without all the students, parents, teachers, friends, and family that have supported this project.

Thanks again for your continued participation and efforts in helping us make a difference in the lives of critically and terminally ill

children and their families.

Book Fair and SocialBook Fair and Social thank you to all our volunteers for helping with the Amazing Parkside Race and book fair, special thanks to Mrs. Valette for her idea to utilize the 3rd grade arches and Ms. Wiley for numerous supplies.
