This term has seen two busy and successful interschool exchanges as winter codes have begun. These form an integral part of the traditions of SBHS and are an important point of difference for us as a boys’ school. The school has also hosted a regional chess tournament and several students are preparing for the imminent senior production “Footloose” amongst the many other co-curricular activities available to our students. I wish all success in their chosen fields.

NCEA Changes On 13 May, the Minister of Education announced that there would be no charges for

participating in NCEA and NZ Scholarships for domestic students. Any payments that have

been made to date will be refunded to your son’s school account. Unpaid charges for NCEA

will be removed from the account.

PPTA Strike & Teacher Only Day The PPTA has advised that teachers at all primary and secondary schools will be taking strike action on Wednesday 29 May. Therefore, school will be closed on this day. Also, as indicated in our school calendar since the beginning of 2019, we will be holding a Teacher Only Day on Friday 31 May. This is to allow our staff to participate in ongoing professional learning [as allowed by the Ministry of Education]. Therefore, the school will be closed for instruction on

both Wednesday 29 and Friday 31 May for all students. Students are, however, expected to attend school as normal on Thursday 30 May.

SBHS/SGHS 2019 School Ball The combined ball for our Year 13 boys’ is being held on Friday 31 May. The theme is ‘Grease’.

Boys’ and their partners will be arriving at the Bill Richardson Transport World (Tay Street)

from 7.30pm onwards. There are limited viewing tickets available to the boys’ family.

SBHS PTA Surf 'n Turf Raffle All students will have received from their Homeroom or Tutor Teacher, a raffle card with 10 tickets at $2 each ($20 per raffle card) for our annual Surf ’n Turf raffle. We envisage that if every student sells their 10 tickets, the raffle will generate close to $17,000 profit for the purchase of additional resources for the students use. Over the past couple of years, the funds raised from this raffle have been used for: · cake mixers

· tents for shelter at sporting events

· school banners

· basketball hoops

· basketball uniforms,

· a rowing machine

The profit from this year’s raffle is being targeted towards new mobile ‘Computers on Wheels’

(COWS) which will enable students to use these in classrooms and a designated volleyball area

for use by students at intervals and lunch breaks as well as class and house groups. The raffle

sale period is from Wednesday 22 May to Friday 7 June. All cards need to be returned by this

date please and the raffle will be drawn under Police supervision. Prize winners will be notified,

and prizes distributed by Friday 21st June. Daily updates of the raffle progress will be on the

student notices and on the SBHS Facebook page. Spot prizes for students returning sold cards

will be given at both senior and junior assemblies over the raffle phase. Home room and tutor

group lunch prize for most cards returned fully sold. Additional cards available for students to

sell from the Main Office. For every two cards sold students go into draw for $100 voucher of

their choice. Overall student selling the most cards receives $100 voucher of their choice.

Deans Corner Firstly, the Deans, along with the Senior Management and staff of SBHS would like to thank all the students who walk through our gates wearing the correct school uniform every single day. We would also like to extend this thank you to whanau and caregivers that make sure your boys are dressed in the right attire and support us when we must confiscate non-regulation items. Secondly, we are concerned with the growing number of students who are asking to sign out of school for appointments that should be made of school hours. As a school we understand the need for medical or specialist appointments and we certainly make exceptions for this type of appointment. However, haircuts for example, do not fit these criteria. We would also like to mention that attendance at Assembly times on a Tuesday and Thursday is compulsory. There are a growing number of boys who are not attending. They will be marked truant and consequences will be acted upon.

ACCELL Programme We have been fortunate to once more

have students accepted into the ACCELL

(Accelerated English Language Learning)

programme. Three of our students:

Sebastian, Kevin and David began live

lessons with their e-teacher late in Term 1

and are now fully involved with over 6

hours of English Language Learning per

week. The boys enjoy participating in the

live lessons and join with students from

two other schools via skype and adobe connect. They are working hard, and their English is

improving greatly. Well done boys!

ANZAC Service

On 30 April the school held our traditional

ANZAC Service inviting members of the RSA

and Old Boys’ of the school. This year we had

a huge turnout of RSA members that had

never attended our Service before, and they

were emotionally impressed with the service

and how our boys acknowledged the fallen

soldiers who had attended SBHS. Thank you

to Lynley Dear for all her organisation and

dedication to SBHS.

Weedbusters Our group of dedicated Weedbusters saw all

their hard work over the last year pay off as

they planted 70 native trees and bushes at

Thompson’s Bush. The area that they have

cleared of invasive weeds like ivy have now

been replaced with native species provided

by ICC Parks Department. Good work

Momentum, our Senior Choir are busy preparing their programme of

three songs for the upcoming Southland Regional Final of the Big Sing

competition. Held at First Church, this annual competition is part of a

series of events across the country that typically sees nearly 300 choirs

competing for a place in the National Finale. This year, there is also a

possibility for selected choirs to go on to a South Island festival.

Please come along and support our nearly 50 strong choir at First

Church on Tuesday 18th June at 7:30pm. Tickets will be available from the door on the

evening.

Senior students have been rehearsing with energy and focus to bring you this amazing musical.

You’ll know the music… Holding Out For A Hero, Let’s Hear It For The Boy, Almost Paradise,

and you’ll love the story.

When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for

the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the

rigorous local laws, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to

exercise the control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home.

When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries

to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the

new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a

young man aching for the father who walked out on him.

Borland Lodge – Year 7 Camp

Wet feet, smelly socks, fun memories and the experience of a lifetime, Camp at Borland Lodge. Great

food, lots of banter. Huge heights and enjoyable moments. The good weather set the scene but watch

out for the sandflies they take anything they can get. It was definitely worth it. I will never forget all the

camp fire stories and fun activities we enjoyed. By Saxon Brookland

Borland Lodge

On the 6th of May up until the 8th of May Room 32 went to Borland lodge. Camp is at Borland lodge it is

a very fun place. We got to make huts, go abseiling, do archery and bush walking. We played game

like Spotlight and Battleships. The food is amazing, the first night we had nachos and then the second

night we had lasagna. A funny moment was when I found my sock from 3 weeks back when I went up

to Borland with my family. Abseiling is challenging when you are scared of heights but give it your best

shot. Make the most of your time at Borland and have as much fun as you can. By Kyan Spiers

Camp 2019

High heights, building huts and funny moments, this is camp at Borland Lodge 2019. Some of my

highlights were the Bivvy making that was awesome because we got to design our own hut how we

wanted. Another one to look out for is the sandflies they will take whatever they can, so bring your

insect spray. The best of all was playing rugby at night because we had heaps of fun. By Taine Smith

Room 32s Camp at Borland Lodge

During camp we discovered new challenges like abseiling because most of us hadn’t gone abseiling

before. Most of us gave it a go and did go down, it was scary but cool. Our time at camp was great

because we got the good weather and sunshine for all our activities. A funny moment at camp was

when Rico was a bit clumsy through the walk when we went on the three hour walk, he did an

awesome stunt down the hill, he swung like a monkey! I would like to thank all the parents, teachers

and Year 13s for having fun and telling stories with everyone. By Elliot Cunningham

Camp Borland Lodge

Room 32 went to camp on the 6th of May to the 8th of May it was some of the funniest days of my life

and it was very sunny. We did abseiling which was scary because it was about fifteen meters down

and it was very tough. There was also a little ledge that was hard to get over and quite scary, but I

survived. Then we did bush craft for those of you who don’t know, bush craft is when you use your

surroundings to help build a wee hut to fit a group of six people in. I managed to fit my group in our

hut. The walk was one of the toughest walks I have ever done because there were a lot of puddles

and a bunch of hills. I slipped and hurt myself but now it’s healing. The food was the best ever. Thank

Sports News Achievements – Please let us know of your son’s achievements and we are happy to put

this on our website and in the newsletters. We rely on parents advising us as the sporting

codes do not inform us of our student’s achievements.

Andrea Mulligan has permission slips, these are sent to classes and also emailed home for

all Year 7 & 8 students, boys can also pick them up from the Sports Office. Year 9-13

forms are held in the Sports Office. We will not accept late entries for any sports as these

dates are set by the sporting codes as they need to arrange draws, team lists etc.

NZ Junior 8 Ball Competition On the 12th of April 2019

semi-finalist in the Singles

Trophy Event. These are

great results considering

this is Bailey’s 2nd National Tournament. A great weekend away and excited the Junior

Nationals will be held in Invercargill at the Invercargill Workingmens’ Club.

Basketball The SBA Junior High Basketball season has just finished with some wonderful results for our

Year 7 & 8 Students. It has been wonderful the see the boys improve their individual skills and

teamwork throughout the season. Special thanks to the volunteer coaches who have helped

their teams progress through the season with great results. The powerhouse Year 8 A team’s

unbeaten run throughout the season culminated in their large win last night, taking out the A

grade competition. We also had winners in the B grades Pool 1 and Pool 2. The SBHS Cheetahs

team took out the Pool 1 competition in a close fought final winning by 2 points and Pool 2

was contended by two Boys High teams the Bears and the Lions with the Bears eventually

taking out first place. Well done to all the teams!

Bowls Alex Cross recently won Youth Bowler of the Year award from

Bowls Southland. Alex has developed into a very consistent bowler

playing with a maturity beyond his year (14 years old). Winner of

several major tournaments in Southland in different teams and

always playing as an asset. Winner of the SSS in singles and

finished in the last 8 at the NZ Secondary Schools.

Cycling Congratulations to Mitchel Fitzsimons who was selected into the NZU17 Junior Development

cycling team to travel to Australia for the Tour of Canberra recently. Well done to Mitchel his

achievements with cycling have been outstanding.

Softball As part of Summer Sports Week, the SBHS softball team travelled to Christchurch to defend their title in the Division 2 South Island Tournament. At the end of last year, several key players left school, so this year’s team was in rebuilding phase with the team consisting of a few younger students. Coached again by James Affleck, ably assisted by Marc Johnson and managed by Rosie De Goldi, the team played some great softball throughout tournament week yet were unable to secure a top 4 spot this year but finished a creditable 5th.
