© MSC 2007

An organization is any formal

or informal group of people who meet consistently overtime for a common purpose.Organizations include a widerange of groups, such as:501(c)3 nonprot organiza-tions, political parties, affi nity groups, “kitchen table” orga-

nizing groups, student clubs, artist collectives, etc. Organi-zations use a wide variety of movement-building strategies, but a common function is toconnect and organize individu-als within a movement.

A network is a loose struc-ture through which memberorganizations and individu-als share resources and infor-mation over time. Networkscan help a broad group of people and organizationscreate a shared identity;they also provide a spacefor mutual support betweenthose who share a commonmovement-building role orinterest.

A coalition is a vehicle thathelps individuals and orga-nizations address a particularissue, often through a jointcampaign. Because of theirnarrow focus, coalitions caninclude members who have widely different political be-liefs, values, and visions, but who agree on the particularissue at hand. Coalitions aregenerally goal-focused andtime-limited: once they haveachieved their goal, they disband.

A strategic alliance:Builds ongoing relation-ships between a set of organizations that sharecommon long term vi-sion, strategy, and goals within a movement Articulates and advancesa multi-year movement

strategy Incubates and alignskey movement buildingorganizations as part of its strategy, andProvides space for net- working within a sector

Strategy is the plan for how to get from your current conditions to your vision of a better world. It asks us three basic questions: Where are we now? Where do we want to go? How will we get there?

What are the key problems in thecommunity?

What are the root causes of thoseproblems?

What are the long-term changesyou would like to see? What core values are at the root of your vision?

What will it take to get from currentconditions to our vision for a better

world? How does your strategy impact yourroot causes? How does your strategy align with

your values?
