The Growth of Social-Emotional (SEL) Standards There is a current push from both education

policymakers and the workforce to develop and measure student social-emotional skills, such as “grit.”

This push has increased as many states consider adding social-emotional standards as part of their accountability structure under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act

skills means collecting new, sensitive data to evaluate whether students are learning these skills.

As more states adopt SEL standards, it is essential that privacy is built into those standards.
