OwnershipOriginally, Celador was taken over by Complete Communications and as a result bought out shareholders Paul Smith and Jasper Carrot. Complete Communications then expanded the companies radio, film and international business. Celador Production then completed a buy out of the company.In 2006, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire’s rights and programme Library were offered for sale by Celador .Celador took legal action against Disney for unpaid profits from Disney’s of the show in the US, Celador won $177 million in damages.

Operating Model

Celador began with a project fund but with the success of Who wants to be a millionaire they were then allowed them to become self sufficient and no longer needing funding from others.They could then work across continents because of the success, leading to slum dog Millionaire, which Celador funded themselves. The company initially started with Tv Shows as this is what the BBC gave them money for. They then went on to make films with the fortune made by Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, other tv shows are Dectectives. Some of the movies include Dirty Pretty Things, The Descent and Slumdog Millionaire.It also has multiple radio stations like The Breeze Network and Sam FM Radio.Celador also expanded their company into producing theatrical entertainment with a musical adpation of Slumdog Millionaire.

Market Position

One of Celador’s most successful films are the Descent. This was released in 2006 with a budget of £3.5 million and a box office of £36 million, bringing in a profit of £32.5 million Also released in 2006 is 20th Century Fox’s X-men Last Stand this had a budget of £135.91 million and the box office £297.3 million making a profit of 161.39 million.The descent has a smaller budget compared to X-Men and as a result X-Men bought in more money.

Another movie released around the same time as The Descent is Nanny Mcphee by Working Title Films. This had a budget of £16 millions pounds and box office amount of £79 million. Leading to a profit of £63 million this means it had a higher profit than the Descent bringing in £30.5 million more.
