DIGITAL LITERACY & DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP FOR

ABOUT CENTER FOR CREATIVE EDUCATIONThe mission of the Center for Creative Education

is Transforming teaching and learning through creativity and the arts. CCE envisions a world

where each child has the opportunity to learn and grow in the way that meets their needs and

allows them to reach their full potential as citizens and contributors to society.

In the early 1990s, the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, concerned about increasing cuts

to arts education in schools, commissioned a county-wide study to find a way to fill the void.

In 1994, that study led to the creation of the Center for Creative Education. Our original mission was to train teachers in how to bring

The arts back into schools by integrating art into other classroom studies. Integrating the arts into the core academic subjects to enhance student engagement and comprehension is still the core of our work today. CCE

partners with schools and after-school sites in Palm Beach County, AS WELL AS AT OUR FACILITY to provide quality, creative educational

opportunities, using the arts as the foundation.

CCE PROGRAMMING

We believe that digital citizenship skills have become essential for students in the 21st century, especially in

schools like ours that are using technology to transform learning. That’s why we are committed to teaching our students how to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly. Center

for Creative Education has just been approved as a Common Sense School, an honor that recognizes our efforts in teaching digital citizenship to young people

and engaging the entire school community in this important discussion. The recognition acknowledges our

program’s commitment to helping students think critically and use technology responsibly to learn, create, and participate.

This honor is provided by Common Sense Education, part of a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the

trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology.

Decades of studies have shown afterschool arts programs significantly reduce instances of youth violence and social-emotional problems

while promoting academic success and engagement in school.

MEDIA ARTS PROGRAMCCE offers in-house programming for CULTURALLY DIVERSE students

combining the arts and technology to support their academic, social and creative development. Branded ‘MEDIA LITERACY’,

these multimedia storytelling programs promote the “4 Cs” of the 21st Century Learning model:

collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity.

Students also gain Media and Technology Literacy for success in an increasingly technology-driven world. C4 leverages the arts and

technology to enhance student performance in language arts, math and science, aligning with the Florida Standards and supporting the School

District’s strategic plan. C4 offers a healthy outlet for self-expression for disadvantaged teens who feel they are not heard

or valued in school or at home. Students can begin their C4 journey in any of the program levels being offered:

Connect (grades 6-8)Create (grades 9-12)

structured technology-based learning environment where they are exposed to impactful stories of personal, cultural and social rel-evance. Students work together to form an understanding of real

issues affecting their lives while building their arts, technology and media arts skills in a variety of formats.

Create(GRADES 9-12)

high school students begin to master the skills of digital media production and gain real-world experience that prepares them for

post-secondary education and career readiness. Our program offers year-round project-based learning as well as work-study

opportunities in graphic arts, digital cinema, web design, and appdevelopment. The curriculum promotes healthy peer interactions, problem-solving and positive self-expression. Students assemble

professional portfolios of original projects, materials and other digital media and artwork. For example, students recently completed

a documentary addressing youth homelessness and designedpromotional posters in our Split Rock Studios. The photo to the left

is an example of one of our students’ promotional poster designs fora recently completed documentary addressing youth homelessness

Once students have a strong foundation in technical, cognitive, and communication skill-sets, they work collaboratively on

production teams for local philanthropic organizations such asMounts Botanical Garden, DePorres Place Center for Adult Literacy,

and Beach Environmental. Students have produced promotional videos for the City of West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County, and

even created work for Tesla Motors and GEICO Racing.

I really enjoyed my media ARTS class at CCE because I was able to do a lot of the things that I am really passionate about. Not only was I able

to work on a project that I loved, but I had full access to professional equipment, which made my experience even better. I learned a lot about

film and artistry, and I couldn’t wait for my class each Friday. Mr Taylor and Mr Erick were both super nice and very helpful. I had so much fun in their classes, and I learned so much. I learned that working well with my peers is a vital part of film making, and the arts in general. I am so thankful that I was able to experience this digital media class, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to have fun and learn a bunch!
