Landscape

Newman Accommodation Project

Existing trees have been retained wherever possible, to assist with the reinforcement of the Newman Drive and Mackay Street ‘Green Streets’ and Fortescue Avenue ‘Watercourse Spine’ as stipulated in the Newman Revitalisation Plan.

Survey was undertaken on site, which indicates trees capable of being retained and trees which were not.

Additional trees are to be planted along with other forms of landscaping.

Design Philosophy

To create a homely, resort styled landscaping scheme within the traditionally sterile environment of fly in fly out accommodation.

Provide a functional refuge, in way of a calming environment with slow moving water, a shaded canopy and lush tropical planting, and making available spaces at an urban/residential scale for passive individual and group uses.

The external sides of the accommodation buildings are proposed to provide functional and aesthetic elements, passive and active security whilst retaining an attractive streetscape. These include:

• Local stone pitching – to catch rainwater runoff

• Lush tropical planting - to help with scaling the tall buildings in the landscape

• Small pockets of lawn and open canopy tree planting

• Natural earth walls and fencing, rather than traditional security fencing.
