September 22 is the official start of Autumn, although in Texas the warm weather can come and go throughout October. If you are anything like me, you might already be daydreaming about the crisp Autumn air. You can enjoy the outdoors in any temperature by just spending a few hours on the fairways with friends or family members during this wonderful time of year. Warm or cool, it will lift your spirits as we cautiously wait for a change in the weather and our lives during this pandemic.

To celebrate the beginning of fall, we are offering a few member specials:

September 2020

Club Championship

The Championship Flight was played from the Gold tees, and we had five

completive players vying for the 2020 Club Champion title. Aaron Hansen carded a

round of 71 the first day giving him a 9-shot lead over last year’s champion, Ted

Waldrip’s 80. Darin Black, Curtis Borland, and Mike LeBlanc fell in line right behind

Ted Waldrip. On day two Ted Waldrip made a charge shooting a 1 over round of 72

but Aaron Hansen's birdie on hole 15, along with his day two total of 79 for a total of

150 gave him a two shot victory over Ted Waldrip. Darin Black came in 3rd place

shooting consistent rounds of 81-82.

The Men’s Division play was much tighter, with 5 players all within one shot

of each other. After day one, Rob Weseman led by a couple of shots turning in a net 69

with Tim Stinneford (last year’s NET winner) and Ken Kilpatrick right behind. On day two,

all three were tied at one point, while Mikal Black silently made his move up the leader

board. For NET scoring, 1st Place went to Rob Weseman posting rounds of 69-74. Mikal

Black secured 2nd place posting scores of 73-71 and Tim Stinneford finished 3rd, just a shot

back of Mikal, with rounds of 71-74. Our best NET score of the two day event was posted by

Dan Weaver on day two. He leaped up the leader board with a second day round of NET

67 and a two day total of 146 tying Mike Bright’s 75-71 (146) total.

1st Place GROSS winner in the Mens’ flight was Ken Kilpatrick

shooting rounds of 80-77.

Tips from the Pro… by Dan Walden

This month, I thought we could talk about the old fable quote “slow and

steady, wins the race”. I think that Paul Casey and Matt Kuchar are the ultimate

examples of this. They are very much so fairway and greens guys, the pair of them

(even though Brendon Todd would probably fit into that category as well for this year). It seems that

Kuchar and Casey have spent their entire careers following this line of thought. Both players average

about 74% of making the cut and hit about 66% of fairways along with over 70% of GIR. Casey, with

his latest performance, moved up slightly in world rankings to 19th while Kuchar currently sits at 23rd.

Both are about equal in career money at around $52 Million.

I would consider Collin Morikawa on a similar track, although not completely proven, as he’s

just getting going. Nothing fancy, as he’s ranked 100th in driving distance at 295 yards behind Casey,

but hits 70% of GIR slightly ahead of Kuchar and Casey. With only 1 missed cut he now has as many

majors as missed cuts and more wins. Also, like Kuchar and Casey, he hits 66% of fairways.

With percentages like these what are your expectations of hitting a fairway? 100%? 90%? Do

you get upset if you miss a fairway? Or miss a green in regulation? These guys understand that with

golf you don’t have to be an “A” student or even a “B” student. From tee to green that is. Once these guys get

within 15 yards of the flag, they all become “B” or even “A” students compared to the field. Morikawa is a full

stroke better than the field on approach shots around the green. Casey is .9% better than the field in the same

category, making him almost a full shot better and Kuchar, although only ½ a shot better in this category, is a

stroke better than the field when it comes to putting.

I hope this shows where you should be putting in the majority of your practice. Good from tee to green

basically a “C” student, but great once you are scrambling around the green a “B” student or better.

Hopefully this will give you some food for thought when you come out to the course.

Texas Star Elite Classic

On August 22-23, the Texas Star Elite Classic was held, formerly titled the Sinclair Invitational. The event is an opportunity for surrounding university golf teams and top high school players to complete against each other prior to the scholastic year competition. The field had 60 participants participating in this year’s event.

In the Women’s division, there were 23 players, after day 1, two players tied with a +1 (72) and several others were just one shot back. Hanna Harrison of Dallas Baptist (DBU) carded a 70 in the last pairing of the day, putting her in 1st place, with a two day total of 143. She finished two shots ahead of four other players who ended at 145. A scorecard playoff determined that Piper Frisbie of Texas Wesleyan received the 2nd place trophy and Evelyn Arguelles of DBU and (a previous champion while at Baylor) finished 3rd last year.

In the Men’s division, Mateo De Oliveria from Texas Christian (TCU) carded a 1st round 66 and led by 3 shots over Trevor Brown (also TCU) who shot 69. Nothing changed throughout day two as Mateo took care of business and turned in a score of 69 for total of 135 for two days. Trevor Brown played well but was unable to overcome the 3-shot deficit and finished 2 shots back with a total of 137. Thomas Allkins (TCU) turned in the low round of day two with a -4 under 67. He finished in 3rd place with a two day total of 138. TCU swept the podium with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.

Labor Day weekend is upon us. For a golf course maintenance staff in Texas, this is

probably the most anticipated holiday of the year. This is the light at the end of the tunnel.

The sign that another brutal Texas Summer is coming to an end and the staff can take a little breath. I use the

term “take a little breath” very lightly though. September, as I have mentioned before, is probably one of the

busiest months of the year for the maintenance staff. This particular month is when most of the work is done

to ensure great playing conditions for the entire winter and early spring.

Some of these duties include:

Seasonal color changes to all the flower bed areas around the clubhouse grounds and the

re-mulching of these beds.

Pre-emergent Herbicide Weed Control Applications: We will be applying these to the entire

course in stages depending on turf type starting the first week in September all the way through

October.

Winter Ryegrass Over-Seeding: This will begin on the clubhouse grounds, par 3 tee boxes, and

driving range tee boxes beginning in late September. During the first several weeks after seed is

planted, the practice area tee boxes will be closed to mats only and the par 3 holes will only use a

single teeing area to help with seed germination and avoid the soggy wet conditions of the turf that

is necessary during this time.

Fall Greens Fungicide Applications: This is a 3-step process of applying fungicide to the greens

beginning about 6 weeks prior to anticipated dormancy. This is to ensure that fungal activity is

kept to a minimum during the times throughout the winter we may have to cover greens for severe

weather. This ensures that turf thinning during spring transition does not occur.

Once again, thank you for all your support and understanding of these necessary maintenance tasks and

I promise you all that everything possible will be done to limit any inconveniences they may cause. Hope to

October Play

October is a busy month on the course; we have a large amount of tournament

play scheduled. A calendar of scheduled events will be posted in the member’s

locker room and available in the Golf Shop. The calendar of events can be

emailed to you upon your request, for a copy, email dwalden@eulesstx.gov.

Junior Golf Update

We are planning to resume the Junior Golf clinic starting on Saturday, September 19th at

9:00am. Anyone that would like to participate in the Saturday practices, we require that you sign up

by the Friday before each Saturday practice. This will ensure we are able to develop each clinic as a

safe and fun environment for the instructors and participants. The cost will be $15.00 per student

each Saturday. As we get to the new year we are planning on returning back to our original
