No charges ladA United Steelworkers union local is

considering a private prosecution afterthe BC Criminal Justice Branch an-nounced last week no charges would belaid in connection to the death of a JohnWilson, who drowned after his excavatoroverturned into a sump filled with waterat Craigmont Mine in Feb. 2008. A unionspokesperson says that investigators did-n't speak to workers who called for barsto be removed from the excavator's win-dows and roof, an issue that was raisedat more than one safety meeting andwould have allowed John's escape fromthe cab of the excavator. Justice Branchhas said that there wasn't a substantiallikelihood of conviction against the mine,a manager or a supervisor if the casewent to trial. Source: Canadian Press

Message from Leutenant Goernor Judth Guchon

250th Annersar of Roal ProclamatonToday [Oct. 7] marks the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Royal Procla-

mation of 1763. The Royal Proclamation defined the relationship between First Na-tions and the Crown, established treaty-making and laid the basis for the recognitionof First Nations rights. The relationship between First Nations and the Crown, basedon principles of peace, fairness and the rule of law, remains important today as we

walk our paths of reconciliation together.Recently, I had the honour of participating in the Walk for Reconciliation in Van-couver where tens of thousands of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people joined to-gether to demonstrate their commitment to building a strong and enduringrelationship with each other. It was inspiring to see so many of our citizens take thesesteps together to help build a new, shared future for all of us.

On this important occasion, 250 years after King George III signed the RoyalProclamation, I encourage all citizens to learn our history and work together for a

better future for all British Columbians. Judith Guichon
