Can you count to

10? Year 1 can!

Year 1 had an

exciting day on

Thursday

celebrating our

school's 10th

anniversary.

We decided to do

lots of activities

based around the

number 10.

We made 'pop up'

cards, wonderful

hats, wrote 10

things that we liked

about our school

and we even

discussed what we

would look like in

10 years time.

Mr. Holden thought

about this and

began to cry!

We then ended

the day with a

fabulous party and

lots of dancing.

The teachers even

had a go too!

MIS is 10 years old

–WOW!

That’s older than

any of the children

in year one. To

mark this special

event, the children

had a variety of

activities. They

were challenged

to construct out of

10 blocks only.

They also thought

about what they

would look like

and where they

would be when

they are 10 years

older, they

created great

drawings and

writing pieces for

this. They got

creative and

made anniversary

cards and party

hats. The children

also enjoyed

writing and

drawing 10 things

they liked about

MIS!

We ended our day

with a joyful party.

Year 6 enjoyed an

action packed

exciting day to

mark the school’s

tenth birthday.

The children took

part in a carousel

of activities. They

tested their powers

of perception in a

quiz where they

had to identify

various areas of

the school from

photographs taken

at unusual angles.

The children also

wrote sonnets

about our

wonderful school;

a sonnet is a 14 line

poem with each

line consisting of

ten syllables.

They also explored

Zentangle patterns

by splitting their

work into ten

sections, creating

wonderful pieces

of original art using

a variety of

designs.

They also made healthy kebabs from

apples, bananas, melons, oranges

and grapes. To finish off the activity

they tasted a, not so healthy,

marshmallow dripping in chocolate.

To round off the day, in Numeracy

they converted the numbers in bases

2, 3 and 4 into base ten.

The highlight for the children was

tasting the truly wonderful food on

offer. So, the Year 6 team would like

to take this opportunity to thank our

valued parents from the bottom of

our hearts for the wonderful dishes all

the families prepared to make this

occasion.

Definition of Sonnet

The word sonnet is

derived from the

Italian word

“sonetto,” which

means a “little

song” or small lyric.

In poetry, a sonnet

has 14 lines, and is

written in iambic

pentameter.

Each line has 10

syllables.

It has a specific

rhyme scheme,

and a volta, or a

specific turn.

The rhymes of a

sonnet are

arranged

according to a

certain rhyme

scheme.

The rhyme scheme

in English is usually

abab–cdcd–efef–

gg, and in Italian

abba–abba–cde–

Example Sonnet

(By William

Shakespeare)

A Shakespearean

sonnet is generally

written in iambic

pentameter, in

which there are 10

syllables in each

line. The rhythm of

the lines must be as

below:

“When forty winters

shall besiege thy

brow,

And dig deep

trenches in thy

beauty’s field,

Thy youth’s proud

livery so gazed on

now,

Will be a totter’d

weed of small

worth held:

Then being asked,

where all thy

beauty lies,

Where all the

treasure of thy lusty

days;

To say, within thine

own deep sunken

eyes,

Were an all-eating

shame, and

thriftless praise.

Shall I Compare Thee To A Super Sonnet?

Loads of children are from different countries

One of our favourite class lessons is Maths

We play games that make us learn a lot more

Teachers rule school trips and yes that’s a fact

Lessons are so much fun when teachers joke

We like our school because it’s really fun

Our favourite teacher is Mrs. Salisbury

Use your imagination all the time

We came far away to come here today

Remember to listen to your teacher

This school lets you have trips to fun places

PE is always fun for everyone

Non-uniform days are so amazing

We also enjoy learning ICT

6MS

How much more

praise deserv’d thy

beauty’s use,

If thou couldst

answer ‘This fair

child of mine

Shall sum my

count, and make

my old excuse,’

Proving his beauty

by succession

thine!

This were to be

new made when

thou art old,

And see thy blood

warm when thou

feel’st it cold.”

The rhyme scheme

of the

Shakespearian

sonnet is abab–

cdcd–efef–gg,

which is difficult to

follow. Hence, only

Shakespeare is

known to have

done it.

Activity 3:

Did you know

there are 10 parts

of the body that

only have 3 letters?

In Year 2 we

celebrated the

school’s 10th

Anniversary by

trying to find these

10 body parts.

It’s much harder

than you think!

First we drew

around a body

and then we

labeled the body

parts we could

think of. It turned

out to be a bit of a

phonics lesson too

as we discussed

the differences

between a word

having 3 letters

(e.g. leg – L-E-G)

and a word having

3 sounds e.g. neck

– N- E- CK.

The best score we

got was 9.

HOPINGTwo weeks ago we

decided we wanted

to build a Mountain

of Hope.

Nobody was quite

sure what the

response would be.

Nobody was quite

sure how big our

mountain would be.

Nobody was entirely

sure how our

community would

respond.

But we had hope…

Two weeks have

passed.

The response has

been far bigger

than we had

hoped.

The mountain is now

much bigger than

we had hoped.

The community

response has been

so much bigger

than we had

hoped.

Together we have

built a Mountain of

Hope.

Thank you all for

giving Hope to our

HOPINGThe situation in

Palu, Indonesia is

still dire but to

know that we

have so many

around us that

have contributed

clothes, food,

made our hearts

swell with pride!

And we are sure it

will all be received

with joy.

Community spirit

doesn't stop in

Mesaieed.

We are all part of

a larger

So if our family is

sad, in need of

assistance, it is

wonderful to see

that we respond,

selflessly and

willingly.
