Age related expectations and targets

• No more National Curriculum levels

• Children will now be assessed against ‘Age Related Expectations’

• For each subject there is a set of age related expectations

• Evidence will be gathered over time to assess whether children are meeting these expectations

Page 12: Year 5 Welcome Presentation - Mesaieed Downloads/CurrOverview2016/Year... · Presentation. Our Mission To inspire and empower our students for a great ... healthyminded- Find out

Age related expectations and targets

‘Age Related Expectations’ should be thought of in these terms:

• Beginning – Children who are beginning to acquire some of the age related expectations. There will often be many gaps.

• Working Within – Children who are largely meeting the age related expectations of the year group.

• Secure – Children who are confident in all of the criteria for the year group.

Page 13: Year 5 Welcome Presentation - Mesaieed Downloads/CurrOverview2016/Year... · Presentation. Our Mission To inspire and empower our students for a great ... healthyminded- Find out

Age related expectations and targets

Where should my child be ideally?

• This will obviously depend on the pupil’s ability level and how hard they work

• However, the expected standard at the end of each academic year will be ‘s’ – ‘secure’

• For example a child who was ‘2s’ (Year 2 and ‘secure’) at the end of Y2, should be ‘3s’ by the end of Y3

Page 14: Year 5 Welcome Presentation - Mesaieed Downloads/CurrOverview2016/Year... · Presentation. Our Mission To inspire and empower our students for a great ... healthyminded- Find out

Age related expectations and targetsFurther information and support with understanding this change in assessment will be provided to you over the coming year.

In the meantime, please be assured that:• Assessments will become easier to understand • Parents, children and teachers will have clear targets• Any areas for intervention will be identified quickly • Parents will also receive regular progress reports

throughout the year

Importance of ReadingReading is one of the most important skills your child will learn. Please help and encourage your child to read for pleasure on a daily basis. You can help by:

• Ensuring your child has a quiet space to read.• Listening to your child read, asking questions about the text,

you can even discuss the book in your own language.• Reading to your child.• Encouraging your child to read a range of texts; such as a

range of genre and a variety of non-fiction such as newspapers, encyclopedias, atlases, etc.
