EXISTING SITE

Living systems around us has to do with the initial concept of a food co-op itself. The Co-op is a fully sustainable process in which the people that are working there are volunteers in this case RISD students. They are discounted in the products they buy. Above the food co-op is a green house that contains solar panels on the vaulted roof to keep plants thermally warm at night. Within the space itself people are able to grow the products that they wish to be sold downstairs. Structurally, I want to incorporate terraced starting outside for public access. This seating will be made out of sod and grass for naturally comfortable seating, but also a functional way to soak up rain water run off. Next to the green house a terrace structure will hold a hanging garden. This will act as a sound barri-er layer toward the students living nearby. At the same time it will inhabit other living systems such as bees, and birds. A RISD food co-op member will leave the store knowledgeable in where they are receiving their produce from, but also an experience of living processes all around them.

04. Providence Arcade Interior Architecture studio, Graphite on Vellum

The concept of my design was focused around the idea of Community and bringing both dogs and dog owners together in a gathering type space. With this idea in mind, I generated my program to facilitate both an indoor dog park, and a dog day care and training facility. I knew that both these programs incorporated the idea of bringing dogs and their owners into an indoor park where they can socialize with others in a park-like setting. At the same time I wanted my training facility to focus on the behavioral aspects of each dog in hopes to have them be able to socialize and interact with one another in a non aggressive way. This led me to plan my space according to private and public space. Keeping with the same layout of the historical Arcade, I wanted to orient people entering from Westminster street side of the building into the more public space, and the opposite Weybosset street side into the more private day care facility. With this type of layout the dog park becomes a space utilizing the natural light of the atrium that is inclosed around the more structure system of the day care facility.

Some of the key elements of my design was the utilization of organic and living plant life. I wanted to bring as much of the outside inward, and so incorporating different types of trees, soil, and grass became important to my overall scheme. A sloping hill with the insertion of a structure built within the hill became the main gesture in my design. Not only did this hill break up my space and act as a barrier between private and public spaces, but also accentuated the scale of a dog with the built in structure below. With the growth of living trees on top of the hill, I wanted to design customized planting pots that became part of the structure to hold large root growth below the hill. The relationship between the planting pots above and a resting point for dogs underneath them was something then further explored.

Cantilever Structure, an extension that emphasizes the minor access of the building continuing the circulation path from the elevators. The extensionredefines the classroom environment by providing a lecture hall-styl space. The extension builds off the existing column structure, with reinforced steel beams and girders. The intervention provides a panoramic view of downtown providence.

INTERVENTION: Make a structure for temporary housing that houses at least a family of three. This was then interpreted into a relief housing as a temporary structure. The structure is made to collapse into a floating platform, and then later stacked as multiple units. It carries storage within platform barrier and a sleeping loft on expanded second story.

Concept: The main idea of this project was built around the structure and rigidity of the beehive. The hexagonal shape is both strong in form, and the way it can attach to each of it’s six sides forming a complex grid system. With the shape being the same as the module structure, it could essentially connect to other floating modules froming connecting spaces between people during an emergency. The design of the structure was taken with the idea of having a practical structure that could collapse into a pad, but aos one that is experiental within. This was done by incorporating iconic elements of Louisiana Architecture, the porch, raised floor, and louvers. Creating and overall feeling of both safe and a sense of home security.

08. 40 Berkley Interior Architecture studio, Digital, Rhino, V-ray Design Intervention: Re-design of the existing SRA Social

Housing on 40 Berkley Street, Boston, MA. The idea is to keep both the permanent SRA woman residents in the existing building, but also introduce temporary living arrangments for Hostel stayers. Concept: Framed around mobility and movement, the idea is that introducing a bike share system within the hostel will be an extension of the inside of the building to the exterior community. Movement is portrayed in the sense that an internal landscape or pathway is extended throughout the building and at different points as you travel towards the roof, are moements of rest and community social space. These are programmed spaces that urge bith community and building interaction as well as both Hostel bike stayers and permenant residents to collaborate amongst eachother.

09. Propositions in Mexico Study Abroad Architecture studio, Watercolor, Gesso

This studio layed the ground work in analyzing the principles and elements of Mexican architecture, color void, light, and wall. Set in San Miguel de Allende, the focus of the studio was broken into two parts, a sketchbook component, and a design studio component. Within the sketchbook the interpretation of building form, shadow, and composition

were taken into account and documented on a daily basis. The design studio was devloped around the idea of building a void, encapsulating it within a box, and creating your own architectural principles that is carried

throughout the entirety of the design. In this case my design was developed around creating a slit of light that can activate a space at certain moments during the day. This “thinking through making” process allowed for an end

product very different than it’s first interpretation.

10. Ocean Spray Atrium Design Interior Architecture Studio, Digital, Hand

This studio worked alongside Ocean Spray’s corpo-rate Headquarters in Massachusettes. The focuse of the studio was a re-design of the company’s atri-um multi-use space. My design concept came from Ocean Spray’s own process of harvesting and corral-ing cranberries. With this in mind, large atrium seating was created with built in private desk seating. The drum of the stairs lead to a half height landing where their own products can be sold at a cafe/retail area. Additional private meeting space is added to the pe-riphery of the room as an outdoor space for a view of the vast landscape.

11. 15 Westminister Interior Architecture Studio, Digital, Rhino

Interior study of 15 Westminister dormitory building. Analyzed the scale and usage of the space between the Atrium space, a larger, elongated, and higher traffic area to that of the Portfolio Cafe dining room which is a smaller quieter space. Pattern studie, plan/elevation drawings, and modeling of each space was done in Rhino software. The model was later rendered in V-RAY for Rhino.

12. Rethinking Green Urbanism Nature Culture Sustainability elective

Mobility is not just a means of traveling from one place to another but a way of structuring a sustainable lifestyle. This does not have to be appropriated to new and upcoming cities, but lower developed cities as well. Mobility can create communities that thrive around the idea of accessibility to and from places that are strategically placed in regards to densification. The proposal for this mobile city is looked as a mediator of energy, economy, classification, population density, and a network that can connect you to and from cultural centers while being immersed in the natural environment. Our design was based off of the archimedes spiral because of the stratifying layers that the spiral creates. This helps develop the variation in density that is important when considering different transit lines. Each layer is differentiated by a greenbelt that our light rail system travels within. Lastly, the idea was that it did not necessari-ly have to be appropriated to the state of rhode island, but in other various regions where a sustainable transportation is not greatly emphasized. The shape of this city plan can vary and change to the landscape and resources that are prominent in different regions. This is in effect of how the built environment is both the product of transformed nature and then transforms nature where we build.

13. Rising Measures Paris Interior Architecture studio, Digital, Rhino

This studio is dealing with the ongoing issue of La Banlieue and the divide between Paris proper and it’s periphery. An investiga-tion of Le Corbusier’s social housing Unite de Habitation in Frim-ny, France led to an analyzation of what is and is not successful in different social housing types. This gave ground to researching a specific suburb and the social housing model within that area, in this case Bobigny, a politically charged suburb of France. Through ongoing research the proposition is to remodel low income housing to promote better living, intergration of community on a micro and macro scale. Through drawing, map diagraming, photo montage, and model making, this has been the continuum of my ongoing research.

As I continue this project and with the understanding of the current circulation and layout of the exsisting structure, I want to excentuate the already positive qualities that the building already has. My proposal strives to incoporate a longitudinal circulation pattern in the form of a ramping path to connect each of the building units. At the ground floor there will be the introduction of commercial program. On the roo will be the incorpo-ration of more dwelling space, and roof landcaped gardens for communal activity.
