    3* REQUIREMENTS3. 1 Material. - Materials shall be in accordance withapplicable drawings and specifications.3.2 Grenade. - The grenade shall comply with all require-ments specified on Drawing (dwg.) 9215458 and with all require-ments specified in applicable specifications.3.3 Functioning. - The grenade shall detonate in not lessthan three (3) seconds nor more than 10 seconds, withoutevidence of large fragments of unburned explosive.3.4 Release resistance. - The safety clip shall not be

    disengaged from its assembled position over the lever by aload of twenty-five (.25)ounces, minimum (min.) when tested(see 6.4).

    3.5 X-ray examination of Fuze Grenade M206A2 prior toloadingin theGrenade:~~~e,eA2. - ~~ch fuze shallbeX-rayedand its radiograph shall .beexamined before loadingof the fuze into the grenade for the following defects:delay column missing; short delay column; Variation in columndensity; voids at bottom of delay column; anvil punch penetra-

    3. 6 Workmansh2~. - All,parts and assemblies shall be fab-ricated and loaded in a thorough workmanlike manner, and allmanufacturing, processing, and assembly operations shall becorrectlyperformed. They shall be clean and free of burrs,sharp edges, unblended radii, surface defects, chips$ dirt,grease and oil (except where specifically required), corrosionproducts and other foreign matter. The cleaning method usedshall not be in~uri.ous to any part or assembly nor shall theybe contaminated by the cleaning agent. Exterior surface coat-ings shall be continuous except for a few light scratches notexposing base material. All required markings shall be neatand sharply defined. Required packing shall be dry.

    3.7 IHrst article inspection,.- This specification containstechnical provisions for first article inspection. Requirementsfor the submission of first article samples by the,contractorshall be as specified In the-contract.4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROV1S1ONS4.1 Responsibilityfor inspection and standard qualityassurance provislonso - Unless otherwfse s ecffied herein or%n he contract, Ehe provisions of MTL-A-4 078 shall applyand are hereby made a part of this detail specification.4.2 Classificationof inspections. - The following types

    of hSpeCtbn shall be conducted on hls item.First article inspection:: Quality conformanceinspection4.3 First article inspection4.3.1 Submission. - The contractor shall submit a firstarticle sample (see b.lb) as designated by the ContractingOfficer. The first article sample shall consist of twenty (20)complete sets of parts and sub-assemblies (i.e.$twenty (20)each of every component and sub-assembly). The first articlesample shall be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of

    MIL-G-48737 (PA)4.4 Quality conformance inspection4.4.1 Inspectionlot formation.- Inspectionlots shallcomply with the lot formationprovisionsof MIL-A-48078.In addition,inspectionlots of grenadesshall contain:

    a. Parts of one lot interfix number from-one manu-facturer.b. Fuzes from not more than one serial lot of onelot interfix number from one manufacturer.c. Charges from one supplier containingnot morethan two lots of TNT from one manufacturer.

    4.4.2.Examination.- (See MIL-A-48078). Unless otherwisespecifiedin the classificationof defects and test tables,samplingplans for major and minor defects shall be in accord-ance with MIL-STD-105,InspectionLevel II. Equipment nece-ssary for the performanceof the inspectionslisted shall bein accordancewith 4.4.4

The lot shall berejected if during the test a critical defect occurs or ifthree (3) or more assemblies exhibit any of the major defectslisted in.Table II.

    4. 4. 3. 1. 2 After three (3) consecutive lots have compliedwith the acceptance criteria of 4.4.3.1.1, thirty (30) grenadeassemblies shall be selected for test. The lot shall beaccepted on zero failures and,shall be rejected if a criticaldefect occurs, or if two (2) or more grenades exhibit any ofthe defects listed in Table 11. The lot shall undergo aretest of thirty (30) samples if one major defect (see TableII) occurs in the initial sample group. Upon retesting thelot shall be rejected if a critical defect occurs or if twoor more assemblies exhibit any of the major defects listedin Table II.

    If any fuze shows evidence of any of the defects listed in TableIII, it shall be classified defective and removed from the lot.(see 6.6). The method of fuze examination shall be as specifiedin 4.5.3. Definitions of defective fuzes are defined in 6.5.4.4.4 Inspection equipment. - lhenspection equipment re-quired to perform the inspectlons and tests prescribed in thisspecificationis identified in the Paragraph Reference/Inspec-tion lWethodlcolumn in the tables starting with paragraph 4.4.2.1,and the test method paragraphs (see 4.5). The contractor shallsubmit for approval, inspection equipment designs in accordance.with the terms of the contract. (See Section 6 of MIL-A-48078,and 6.2 herein.)4.5 Test methods and procedures4.5.1 Functioning. - The grenade assembly shall be Immersedin water maintained at seventy (70) plus or minus five (5) de rees?)ahrenheit (F.) for one hour at a depth of not less than two 2Inches. The assembly shall be removed from the water and withinone hour shall be mounted In the functioning test flxtune specifiedin 4.4.4 and detonated by remotely removing the safety pin. Thefixture and grenade.shall be centered in a barricaded arena capableof withstanding the effects of detonation. The grenade assemblyskkallbe observed for compliancewith the requirements.

    MIL-G-48737 (pA). . 4.5.2 Release resistance. - The load shall be applied slowlyand steadily, parallel with he safety pin in the clip releasingdirection, until the total load is supported by the clip. Theclip shall be observed for compliance with the requirements.

    4.5.3 X-ray examination of fuze assembly. - Inspection equip-ment and the image quality of the radiographs for this examinationshall be satisfactoryto the Procurement Contracting Officer.The direction of the x-ray beam employed in this inspection shallbe perpendicular to the axis of the delay tube.

    NIL-G-48737 (PA)6.4 Release Resistance. - The safety clip shall be considereddisengaged from its assembled position over the lever when the squareend of the safety clip moves upon the flat surface of the leverto the extent that the clip does not return to +ts originalassembled position when the load Is removed.6.5 Definitions of critical and major .defectsfor use inx-r.6.5.1 rY~iSSinEr short delay column - (Critical Defect). -TMs defect 3.sdefined, as crittcal when there is no coIumn or*. when,the delay column does not reach the base oilthe threadedportion of the fuze body.6.5.2 Variation in column density (Major A Defect). - Thisdefect is defined as a major defect when there is significantvariation within a given delay column , of the apparent columndensity as viewed on the radiograph.6.5.3 Voids at the bottom of delay column (Major A Defect). -This defect is defined as a major defect when the void at thebottom of the delay column (detonatorend) extends across theentire diameter of the fuze body delay cavity.6.5.4 Anvil punch penetration at bottom of the delay column(Major A defect). - This defect is defined as a major defect whenthe anvil punch penetration at the bottom of the delay column,including any breakout, extends more than 0.100 inch up into thecolumn. (NOTE: Fuzes without any other defects which have anvilpunch penetration, including breakout which does not extend morethan 0.100 inch up into the column are acceptable providing theheight of the delay column is at least 0.700 inch when measured

    from the top of the anvil punch mark or breakout. Measurement isnot made from the base of the delay column).6.5.5 Porosity in the fuze body (Major A defect). - This defectIs defined as a major defect when the fuzebody at the intersectionof the threaded portion and the delay Column$ is round to be pOI+OUS.6.5.6 Broken styphnate and azfd.ein detonator cup (Major Adefect). - ~his defect f.Sdefined as a major defect when my broken0 crumbled, or loose styphnate and azide is detected In the detonatortube.

    MIL-G-48737 (PA)6.5.7 Foreign matter in delay column (Major A defect). - Thisdefect is defined as a major defect when any foreign matter isdetected in the delay column which could preclude the proper ini-tiation and propagation of the delay element,6. 6 Disposition of defective fuze assemblies6. 6. 1 Critically defective fuze assemblies. - When a criticallydefective fuze is found, this Arsenal (SARPA-QA-A-M) shall benotified immediately and the fuze held pending disposition and inno instance will the fuze be destroyed without permission of theProcurement Contracting Officer.6.6.2 X-ray examination of defective fuze assemblies. - Alldefective fuzes shall be re-x-rayed to confirm their identity,and the effectiveness of the screening process, in additions thisArsenal (SARPA-QA-A-M) will be notified on a continuing basis ofthe quantities and specific types of defects found per lot, sothat remedial action may be taken at the fuze contractors plant.
